How to Brew Phin Drip Coffee Over Ice | Snap Chilled Style | Quick & Easy 30 Second Guide
Sahra Nguyen, Founder of Nguyen Coffee Supply, shows us how to use a phin filter to make a delicious cup of Vietnamese iced coffee. In this video, we're brewing directly onto ice so we get the extraction from hot water and then the coffee immediately cools as it drips onto the ice. A phin filter is a traditional Vietnamese brew tool also known as a phin drip, Vietnamese coffee maker, Vietnamese coffee press. Learn more about Vietnam’s beloved coffee brew tool that’s eco-friendly, portable, and no-paper waste! In this video, we're using Vietnamese coffee beans roasted in Brooklyn, NY.
Step by step video tutorial:
Place ice cubes in glass vessel
Place Phin filter plate & brew chamber on top of glass
Add Vietnamese coffee (2 tablespoons or 14 grams per serving if using a small Phin)
Shake to even out coffee and drop gravity press on top of coffee
Bloom coffee with 1/2 inch of hot water (195º-200º F) for 45 seconds
Add water to top of filter
Do a second pour for less strong coffee
Place cap on top to keep brew hot
First drip should drop before 2 minutes
Adjust gravity press if needed
Safely lift gravity press with a spoon to realign the brew
you can also remove the gravity press and give the Phin a stir to realign brew drip
Last drop finish around 5 min
When done, cap becomes coaster for the brew chamber
Do a second pour of hot water for less strong coffee
Enjoy it black, over ice, or mix it with milk and sweeteners according to your preference.
Add condensed milk for a traditional Vietnamese coffee. There's no wrong way to enjoy your coffee. Cheers!!

Trying Sweetened Condensed OAT Milk with Vietnamese Coffee!
Once I tried Robusta, I lost interest in Arabica. Arabica is ancient history now.
I jut brought this for my mom and myself for christmas. We love it!!! lmao
Communism is trash!
Hi see you, you so beautiful, have a nice day ❤😊
I love how Vietnamese businesses take the anglicize pronunciations and run with it. Like pho=for pronunciation turns into "Yes Soup Pho You", a local pho restaurant where I live.
It sounds like U-yen to me
I live in Minnesota, there are an incredible amount of Hmong, Laotian, and Vietnamese here! I like to learn about the culture and language as I have grown up around it.
This is the most pressing issue in the world today.
Sounds like you're saying noy yin My favorite incorrect way is: Nah goyin
My friends expect me to pronounce the last name as Win. And they all are happy with my efforts. And if I may say. Some of the smartest people I know
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
To me, just as Americans debate whether to pronounce 'croissant' as 'kwah-sawnt' or 'kruh-sant,' while the French insist it should be 'kruh-sahnt,' the Vietnamese surname 'Nguyen'-the most common family name in Vietnam-has its origins in the Chinese character 阮, which was latinized over time. For centuries, this character was used by Vietnamese people, many of whom were descendants of South Chinese immigrants who brought the name with them. The most authentic pronunciation, therefore, aligns with 'jyun5,' reflecting how it was originally spoken by these South Chinese settlers in Cantonese.
Is there a video which actually shows how to make the egg nog latte?
learn to pronounce your surname properly.
It's pronounced Ro boosta not Ro Busta.
Amazing recipe. Many years ago I had a chance to walk in Hanoi streets and the brewing of coffee is one of my persistent memories of that enchanting town, repleted with lakes and century old culture. Thank you.
Dì Trang ơiiiiiiii !
Informative.
Happy Anniversary 🎉
Thank you so much!!! 😀
Mix them 50/50 and you'll have a tasty coffee ☕
Some things don’t need to be fused
Hello: I'm new to your channel. Actually I've just returned after a three week vacation in Vietnam and I'm craving the egg coffee. So... 1) where can I buy the coffee in the USA? 2) Where can I buy the coffee press you are using in your video? Many thanks, I look forward to hearing from you in the next days. Peace!
So, how do you say it?
Would it help to alter the spelling to guide the person in best matching English sounds? No one wants to insult others as we pronounce names. But on the other hand we shouldn’t get too offended as people struggle. I lived in Vancouver for many years and got used to Japanese pronouncing it as Bankooba…hhhh. As it gets worked out we all become clearer… and that’s all we want, isn’t it. It’s a meeting of cultures…. And patience and understanding overcome all obstacles. 😊
Al matcha lo bate con leche o con crema???
Got my first order. It sucks. Terrible flavor. They do not except returns and if unsatisfied will not refund you or try to make it right. I have tried other coffee companies and they will either refund your money if not satisfied or will ship you another brew. Don’t buy
so from both language perspectives it truly is "win win"
Very informative. Thanks for sharing
42grams of coffee is surely not right? Can someone confirm because 42g of coffee powder is almost half a cup
This is possibly the most informative video on TH-cam.
阮
It’s actually the Chinese 阮 character, pronounced Ruǎn in Mandarin, but Vietnamese use a nasal Ng sound.
Thank you for this video. Definitely a Win Win!
Just use "gwen" with the softest G ever. That can suffice.
Pronouns 😂
Had a massive crush on a girl when I was a kid who’s brothers name was Nguyen Nguyen.
My HS girlfriend’s family (in the 80s) pronounced her name nu-win. Two syllables. I’ve heard many vietnamese people since then pronounce it kinda (ng)win with a very subtle ng blended with the w. But when anglicizing i think win and nu-win are the most common that I’ve heard. Now let’s talk about ng!
Thank you for educating me on diacritics. Have a blessed day. 😎✌️
Win.
meaningless to talk about the pronunciation without knowing its origin.
NO ONE GIVES A SHEET ABOUT HOW TO PROUNCE YOUR EFFING NAME.....Vietnam 69-70-71
It just cold coffee not cold brew 😂
That's what cold brew is. Coffee that is brewed cold.
I used to sell computers for MicroWarehouse in the 90's. When I was stumped by this name the customer said his name was pronounced "New win". I guess that was the easiest thing for an American to pronounce so he went with that.
My boss's first name is Tai, when I first started the job I asked how to say it. "I never lose - only Tie and win!"
I like win. I'm American so I take the easy way out.
It's a win-win. YAY!
Your video is one of the videos that made me want to try the Phin, so about 2 weeks ago I bought the Nyugen model. I only like coffee black, so I tried a Phin black, oh my, the taste surprised me, it's better than my Hario V60 Switch! It probably matches my Bialetti Brikka Moka pot and my Turkish coffee in strength, but each has a different taste profile, but the Phin makes very tasty coffee. I haven't bought a bag of Vietnamese coffee yet, I need to go to several of my local international markets and see if they have it first before I buy it online; but even just using local store bought black espresso roast coffee it came out superbly. These Phin makers are cheap to buy, I went with the Nyugen because supposedly it is the original makers of Phin makers, not sure if that's true, but it does work great. Easy to make coffee with, and easy to clean too. Thanks for turning me onto the Phin, and for doing the video, it was very well done and informative.
Then why is it's Latin spelling constructed as Nguyen?.... Should have just done it phonetically. Win or Wynn or Wee'un.... Nguyen just doesn't make any sense.
Thank you!!! And stunning presentation skills, btw
