Thought the discussion was great. Taught a lot of engineers and many left school at graduation thinking they were owed something for having paid zillions for a degree. David explained how Team Cadre provides value with hands on skills - many kids don't know how to market their value to the companies. Tried to push the concept of value but a lot never get it - David does. Enjoyed the talk

If you’ve found your “calling/career,” this might be a great idea if you know the paths to succeed in the field. If there isn’t a specific path, how can you best prepare for navigating the trip? Equip yourself with skills and knowledge. For a kid who doesn’t know what he/she wants to do at 18, college is still a good option. A liberal arts degree teaches you how to learn. It also depends on the quality of the courses. I’ve taken classes in person and online and it can entirely depend on the professor. Is the professor more concerned about publishing a book or teaching students? Is the professor a good teacher? Finding a mentor doing the work you ultimately want to do might be the better option. Apprenticeships are awesome in certain professions. Finding the right “mentor” is key. For example, fantastic athletes are not always the best coaches. More internships, shadowing, and speaking engagements will better equip high school students to be able to make judgment calls on a path. A day in the life of a pilot, carpenter, pianist, software engineer, data analyst, content writer, sales, city planner, electrician… That would be beneficial for every student. Also, it should include information on the longevity of said profession. Are you going to be replaced by a computer or machine? Is it a saturated field? Furthermore, there are fields that exist today that didn’t in the 90s. I was a political science and anthropology double major and graduated in 2004. User research using applied anthropology a.k.a. business anthropology was not discussed. Today, it is a flourishing profession. Exposure should be required for a high school degree. I don’t know what the class requirement would entail… but agree with you. If you know what you want to do, go for it. Find the best program, the best degree, best instructor/mentor and be a sponge. Ask a lot of questions.
