Germany

German poetry,
medieval poetry,
life advice from the great books of wisdom,

understanding the world by writing about it.
E.T. Hansen is an American writer in Germany. This channel features some of the literature and ideas he loves and his experience of life as he goes about trying to live it with purpose.
Here you will find life advice for men and women who strive to achieve every Monday; a new German poem in English every Friday and Eric's unhinged but heartfelt rants about life on Wednesdays.
In addition, he sometimes posts hopeful messages on Mondays mornings, whisky-driven rants about the life on Friday nights and lessons about writing on a Sunday.

Regardless of what anyone believes in, sometimes you just have to admit that certain things find you for a reason. This video was very much one of those things.

Love the care you take in your narration!
haha! I'll assume that's sarcasm but you're right, all I want to do is read it - thanks for listening and commenting!
@@poetryandpurpose No, I thought your reading was nice, haha. I keep running into monotonous voices on YT lately, just thought it was refreshing!

So, Parcival evolves and becomes more 'manly' because he allows his compassion towards the king to overrule the social norms and martial protocol and he asks that impertinant question? This is so profound - so much to unpack.
@@NathanielDickson-k8h Not sure Parzival (this is Wolframs version I’m talking about) expressly addresses manliness (Parzival is never accused of unmanliness I think) or social norms, nor does it question martial norms - in fact there is an interesting and disturbing theory that the Grail Society Parzival eventually becomes king of is a hyper-martial even proto-fascist Organisation. But yes there is a lot to unpack in Parzival and few researchers have even chipped the surface. Thanks for commenting!
@@NathanielDickson-k8h now I wonder if I understood what you’re trying to say. I sense sarcasm but do not see a reason. If there is something you want to say, say it plainly I am happy to hear👂 🤙🙏
@@poetryandpurpose Thanks for reading my comment so carefully. The question (what ails thee uncle?) had popped back into my head a few days ago, because of a conversation about something different. It was after that I'd sought your video and watched it. No, I was not being sarcastic, trying to say it plainly. My comment might have been shaped by a book I read many years ago, or a mis-memory of the story. I have not managed to unpack this topic as much as I'd like, and need to remind myself of the context. I might reread the book. (You are not the first to think I'm being sarcastic when I've added a comment to social media, when I am not. When I am being sarcastic, well, sometimes the opposite happens). 🙏
So... if language is beyond time and the written/spoken exist in the moment, will be spoken/will be written also are in the moment.
well put! thanks!
:D
thanks
Lovely reading. It’s always very humbling when you hear the thoughts of great creatives and you find that they’ve perfectly articulated those “unique” and “personal” sentiments you’ve kept locked up in a little box in your mind- and sometimes hundreds of years before your existence! One of my favorite essays.
yes! I was jealous that he could get out things soil and briefly that would have taken me (has taken me in some cases) pages and pages!
Love your stuff. Just read your book ‘losing my religion’

I hope you'll find in your journey the Truth in the Catholic Church, and always remember that the logic of love is more exalting than the logic of intelligence. Pray fervently and may God help you as he helped me.
Thank you for your thoughts and concern - and yes sometimes it is difficult for me to place love over logic! - al the best to you and God bless you
Very good, I might give this a read. I would recommend "The Wisdom of Insecurity" by Allan Watts among other similar books if being and living interest you. I personally really enjoyed "Small Gods" by Terry Pratchett which is a comedy revolving on the subject on religion and gods(worship). Cheers!

Dude, you have a warped view of life and ethics. Does that same logic hold true if the person were a pedofile, prostitute, embezzling banker, etc. ? Your compass is way off !!
You are absolutely right of course! (Though it would be interesting to hear what real philosopher like Sartre would have to to say.) At the same time, you are applying arguments to ideas for which they were not made. Not all statements apply to everything. That happens a lot today and I think there's a rhetorical name for it, but I don't know what it is. It's like when a pseudo-feminist argues that men and women sports should not be separated because "woman can do anything a man can do" - she is taking an older feminist phrase that was meant to argue for women being allowed to perform jobs previously reserved for men, like doctors and lawyers. It was never meant to be taken literally. But then it became an independent phrase taken to be absolute, and now it's been overused for stupid things and is meaningless. The trope of the "gleeful criminal" is a metaphor not meant to justify evil, but to suggest that we all too often get so burdened down by the exaggerated expectations of society, including imagined expectations, that we cannot enjoying the great privilege that is life. Now stop trolling and get out here and enjoy living! And thanks for making me think so early in the morning!
Your compass is warped
Whats wrong with choosing to be a prostitute ? Its a choice that doesnt harm anyone else... The customers may harm their surroundings by choosing a prostitute but thats not the fault of the prostitute..thats the customers fault

strong statement. In my opinion, nature has no goal. It exists as life exists. I am amazed at the diversity of the beeing, but I don't need to know the meaning behind it. I know, I am strange. :)
@@wolfgangweinberger thanks Wolfgang! I often see meaning and will as expressed by what is - the blade of grass breaks through the pavement to get to the sunlight in order to live therefore it wants to live even though it never decided consciously
@@wolfgangweinberger hope you are well!
I don't think we live in a cold and indifferent world. The universe is rich in links, resonances, echoes. We are part of it, even if humans sometimes feel like puppets victims of the vagaries and whims of natural forces. There are great mysteries to explore. Life wants to spread in the universe. It is a material quest, like sending spaceships into space to colonize new worlds. That's the outside manifestation of this need. But we must not forget that it is also an inner journey, where we must discover who we really are. When Arthur Clarke died in March 2008, one of most powerful stellar explosion ever seen happened in the constellation Bootes. This constellation was traditionally used by explorers for navigation. A message to all explorers?
@@lematindesmagiciens8764 I more and more see life (from the individual perspective) as a privilege- I feel it a privilege to live to feel to think to strive even to suffer and I feel sorry for those who never got this privilege though that may sound nonsensical
@@lematindesmagiciens8764 thanks!
@@lematindesmagiciens8764 also there’s no way the Bootes explosion and Clarke death was a coincidence that means they saw it coming thousands of years before it happened!
❤😂
@@poetryandpurpose You are welcome. Breaking News : SETI, the organization responsible for listening to extraterrestrial signals from outer space, has received a message from the constellation Bootes. It has been translated. It reads as follows: ‘Greetings Earthlings, we have been recently trying to get your attention by blowing up a star in a planetary system with no life. We did this in honor of one your great writers, Arthur Clarke. We really liked 2001, A Space Odyssey. We just want to confirm that, as usual, the book was better than the movie.” 😉😉

Just one aspect to this (and I speak as a Catholic) - on the supernatural, the Catholic Church's teaching is - essentially - "keep away from it" (so - for example - attending seances or going around graveyards late at night is very much frowned upon) - then there's the "practice" - so to speak - and the "lived experiences" of priests - I imagine - just like others in society - some priests - as with the priest mentioned in this video - have had "supernatural experiences". Anyway have a beautiful day !
I didn't know Catholics thought about it that much! anyway thanks!
Yes there is , they are demons, sir and I have seen them many times. They are not our relatives coming to visit. The bible says to test our spirits , like Saul did.
thanks for the warning! all the best to you!
I’m Catholic and I absolutely believe in ghosts. I’ve personally seen them. I asked a priest once if he believed and he said no he didn’t believe. That stunned me!!!

"The worlds we are creating within ourselves" thanks. Writers are not nuts, we write. With me it's comedy, "Come into the office and take something down" That could have been funny 50yrs ago. Not now. "Can you do short hand?" Yes I should stop. But an editor could make a difference.
Hey, I liked the comedy 50 years ago!
I invested in a pair of boots to take morning walks like you do to appreciate nature. They will wear out like the rest of us, but what a way to go. (who was it that talked about "Journey not the Destination"?)

Why are bad habits harder to break than good ones?
If I could break bad habits as easily as I make them I'd be living on top of the world right now!
When you are punctual, you are usually the only one who knows it
haha! I come from Hawai where we have "Hawaii time", and was raised a Mormon, where we have "Mormon time" - when I came to Germany I had a hard time adjusting! good luck!
I wouldn’t lift a glass of piss to toast Robbie Robertson.
Not all the way through the video, but you mentioned not being able to shake the feeling, i feel the same thing! I was raised primitive baptist and i left. I quit going to church for years but only recently renounced my faith and i am still struggling with the indoctrination. I do lovingly envy those who weren't brought up in such a cult way of thinking.
But there is more. Just not what people have written down? Nothing fits sort to say . I just can't get behind christianity or any organization of religion.i think it's important to take back our autonomy and never give our power to a human made concept
Glad to meet someone with similar experiences! I wrote a whole book about it! There are things I miss, but I could never go back. You did the right thing - good luck!
Thank you I'll give your book a thorough look at when I get the chance!@@poetryandpurpose

My dog chewed up my leather jacket. I guess he loves me for who I really am. He knows I don't need one to be a tough guy... he doesn't like being on a lead when we go "Walkies".
