Social Justice Science Issues with Nina Hike
We started off 2025 strong with our largest attendance yet in the 2024-2025 OWT series! In this talk, Nina weaves in her personal journey as a child growing up in a chemically hazardous environment, to becoming a biologist and chemistry teacher. Throughout her career of over 28 years, Nina has brought social justice and NGSS standards together to create a more meaningful, current and engaged curriculum to her labs and classroom.
In our webinar on Wednesday, Nina shared how Green Chemistry plays a vital role in exploring chemical toxicity and environmental impact. By emphasizing the connectedness of their lived experiences with the chemistry they learn in the classroom, Nina has inspired several of her students toward careers in sustainability.
To hear Nina's talk, find the recording linked below. This conversation is ongoing, to join the dialogue please join us in the GCTLC Discussion on Social Justice/Environmental Justice. To find more of Nina's work, check out her podcast Pushing Praxis, cohosted by Celeste Ramovic.
