Gasoline evaporates way faster. Gasoline also has a lot of additives. All things considered actual zippo fluid is not that bad in terms of price. You can use gas in a pinch but if you can buy zippo fluid is recommended sticking with it

I used mixture of gas and oil that my family used for agricultural machine that diggs (moto-cultivator, I dont if that is propper name on english for that). Yep, it had a strong smell, and when you turn it off in a closed spaced you cpuld see with your eyes how dirt from flame is gently falling down like some black tiny snowflakes. I was a kid and needed a lighter for starting fire when out in nature, fishing etc. But instead of zippo, I used Imco Triplex lighter. For those who dont know it, check it out. Its a bit better then zippo, and you can put tank out and use it as a little candle for as much as it has gawoline in it. And due to cap on bottom, fluid does not evaporate at all. Plus, its much easier and safer to start a fire with it then with zippo. Of course, no reason not to have as many as you wish of both and many others in collection 😎
