This is seriously one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard! I was just re-reading The Dark is Rising over this past Xmas holiday season and kept thinking about how the poems in the books deserved to be set to music. What a treat to discover someone actually did it!
Beautiful
Im in a bar watching this now. I learned Stan Rogers from seeing Dave sing these songs at cons. Im about to do Northwest Passage in Karaoke and Ijust found out one of David Thompsons decedents is here and I hope I can do even a pale reflection of Daves Voice. I still hear these songs in Dave’s voice…….
I was -11 years old when this was filmed I'm in university now
powerful voice and impactful song, makes me want to finally read the book
The influence of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young is obvious and appreciated
I just started crying whilst listening to this. I have never done that before, but it's just something about thinking about how amazing her voice is.
The Pitch is perfect, Her tone pernitrates the Soul, the power of her voice is something to behold.
Julia Ecklar has ruined music for me because now I can't listen to anything other than her. Her voice is just amazing!
This was the year after (I think) I saw her perform at Draconis in Louisville, already a fan of her album "Divine Intervention". I wound up getting my guitar from home and playing in the Filk salon the next day (I had already written a song about the physicist Richard Feynman, and overnight I wrote a new one for J. Robert Oppenheimer, which I have (justly) forgotten). My cassette copy of Divine Intervention is long gone, but in 35 years I have not forgotten key lyrics to many of the songs on that album, most especially "Ladyhawke!" and her song about the destruction of the Enterprise in Star Trek III. She also had a song about Elfquest, which was striking to me even though I don't know a lot about the franchise from which it's derived. I love Ecklar's voice, lyrics, composition, and guitar work. Decades later I performed episodes of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy at another science fiction convention (GalaxyCon) in Louisville, my second con-going experience. I'm dyed in the wool as a science fiction fan (big nods to fantasy, of course), but I'm poor, and life is short. Does that make me a "mundane"? As a guitar player, I can do an entire evening of music from science fiction, either purpose written (as hers is) or popular music that has been used in science fiction media such as radio, television, and film. Thanks for the memories. She is the freakin' best, and I have to count her as an important influence in my musical development and career.
Absolutely outstanding!
Getting set up for a Spelljammer campaign, and just found out about Julia Ecklar. Holy shit, this is exactly what I needed. Never even had heard of "Filk" music before!
This poem lives in my head. It makes me so happy that someone recorded a good version of it. Especially since this book series never really got the attention it deserves.
Wonderful. I've never had a chance to see Cynthia Mcquillan and I like Dr. Jane Robinson.
Thank you for sharing these concerts, it's really wonderful to listen to them and see the filksingers themselves
K, so I've been looking for "Rumour Monger" lyrics for 40 minutes and come up empty. Anyone got a hint?
Try Googling for the song title + songwriter name + lyrics? I found it in about 10 seconds.
Found. Thanks. Was a bit of trouble, but I managed!
The nice Guild guitar Dave is playing was loaned to him for this concert by Karen Rodgers. I am very glad to have the updated audio added to the video. Have always love seeing Dave Clemet perform.
ConChord 10 was my first ConChord, so I missed this one. But I recognized Karen's Guild.
Absolutely wonderful! Thank you for working on preserving and caring for these recordings.
Always blows me away the talent here
I don't think I've ever found a video of a live performance! Awesome.
I DIDN'T KNOW SHE EVER DID A VIDEO!!! this is so rad
The song was written by Fred Small. Was often sung in filk circles back in the day. Some could sing in in Japanese.
Too evil; Too gentle. Breed again and give them what they need. Your perfect Third child. They know what I must be. Last hellish hope for Man's salvation. (Chorus) The winner takes it all. Tin soldier, made from fear and shame. Tin soldier, shaped by lies and pain. I'm a tin soldier, weapon more than child. A gun to point whichever way they choose. They've nothing left to lose. (End of Chorus) Teach hardness, Teach horror, Teach children how to hate in fun. What's worth this? Don't worry - I'll know before they're done. How many children's lives were wasted? How many lies were told (for a) (Chorus) Don't bother Explaining. I never want to hear it all. Just tell me I mattered Somewhere beneath it all. Or was I just a cold equation? All part of the big game (for a) I've nothing left to lose.

Well, I'm a small-town boy with a heart of gold, Not to mention heat vision and breath that's cold, I've got super strength, I'm immune to pain, But I'm weak in the knees around Lois Lane. She's got a sexy walk, and the bluest eyes; Her clothes are all painted onto her thighs. She's got great taste, so I just don't see Why she's in love with my costume, but not with me. I can change the course of rivers, bend steel in my bare hands, But none of that hokey macho stuff makes me feel any more like a man. I'm faster than a speeding bullet, I'm tougher than a moving train, But why leap a tall building in a single bound, When I'd rather jump Lois Lane. Well, I'm a nice, easy-going kind of guy, I've got mild manners and my wit is dry, But it doesn't ever seem to matter what I say, 'Cause Lois never gives me the time of day. But when I fly the city in my blue and red, She'd risk the whole world just to get me to bed, But that's not the way I want to let her get my bod, It's not making love, it's seducing God. I've told her a thousand times, we can never risk normal sex. If I lose control, we could get David Cronenberg to do the special effects, I'm faster than a speeding bullet, I'm tougher than a moving train, But why leap a tall building in a single bound, When I'd rather jump Lois Lane. Well, I'm sick of all the supervillains poking fun, Just because I'm still a virgin at age thirty-one. I don't like the names that I'm being called, I couldn't care if Lex Luthor's always been more... bald. I'd love to let Lois know the way I feel, To let her know the man underneath the steel, But she doesn't want to have a thing to do with me Unless I'm out bashing baddies in my Bee Vee Dees. I've had it with the hero biz, frustration has got me down. Why should I bother with saving the city when I'd rather be painting the town? I'm faster than a speeding bullet, I'm tougher than a moving train, But I'd throw it all away in a minute if I Could just once get the jump on Lane.
Iron for the birthday, bronze carried long, Wood from the burning, stone out of song, Fire from the candle ring, water from the thaw. These six Signs the Circle at the last Signseeker's call. Fire on the mountaintop will find the Harp of Gold, Played to wake the Sleepers, the oldest of the old. Power from the Green Witch that's been lost beneath the sea. All these things shall find the light, silver on the tree. When the Dark comes rising, Six shall turn it back. Three from the Circle, three from the Track. Wood, bronze, iron, water, fire, stone - Five will return, and one go alone. On the Day of the Dead, when the year, too, dies, Find the youngest in the oldest hills the door where seabirds fly. There fire will flee the Raven Boy and silver see the wind, And the Light shall have the Harp of Gold in safety once again. By the pleasant lake on Cadfan's Way, the ancient Sleepers lie, Where the Grey King's shadows haunt the land, and wicked kestrels cry. There one great Thing of Power by the Light shall sing and guide, So the Sleepers might their long sleep end, and for the Light outride. When the Dark comes rising, Six shall turn it back. Three from the Circle, three from the Track. Wood, bronze, iron, water, fire, stone - Five will return, and one go alone. The Grail is first to lead them, over sea and under stone. A Seeker soon to follow on a quest begun alone. Ways of old to guide and guard, Paths to bring and send; Circles both in Light and Dark from starting until end. When Light back from the Lost Land's shores shall in the end return, Six Sleepers all shall ride again, Six Signs shall brightly burn. And where midsummer's tree grows up, all silver, fair, and tall, Pendragon's sword against the Dark shall bring Dark's final fall. When the Dark comes rising, Six shall turn it back. Three from the Circle, three from the Track. Wood, bronze, iron, water, fire, stone - Five will return, and one go alone.
Oh god! I think I can Die now. This is amazing.
🤣🤣🤣 This is "really" great. So fun and funny.😂
I never dreamed of finding these
Wonderful :)
love this song sounds great
Her voice is just amazing.
I reflexively disliked this video when it ended. I can only apologise and hope that adding this to my favorites will make up for the unintentional slight on one of the greatest voices I have ever heard!
I loooooove this song so much :) Thank you for this gem 🥰
I have been listening to Julia Ecklar since the womb. My parents both knew Julia. I've honestly never seen a picture of her my whole life but she looks 100000% like the kind of person I'd have hung out with in HS.
She has suck a great voice, been collecting her most rare songs through the years, wish I could see her live.
When I was much younger I went with her to a Con. This is from the year after that.
I was introduced about five years ago to filk by my parents, when the first copy of Digwell Carol turned up on youtube. I am impressed by how the collections have grown, and this is a very unique version. Having an ASL interpreter is rare for filk. I love seeing how it displays this heartbreaking song.
Awesome, thanks for posting this!
Time travel!
Wonderful
