How to review someone else code
มุมมอง 812 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, I will go over how to review someone else code. As a software engineer this is a major part of your day to day task. Sadly enough many engineers aren't great at reviewing code. Some leave hurtful comments, and some don't help engineers that are struggling. Reviewing someone else code is suppose to be a teaching moment. In many ways it's not always viewed that way. good video. Thanks!
I know this is an old video, but I'm just finding it. Are you still in this field? What advice do you have for complete noobs? I just joined an MIT Intro to cs course(cert gained after final exam) 2 weeks ago and I'm learning python. I have known nothing before this lol I've always been "decent" at tech. Like people ask me to handle their stuff..and.I built my own PC - meh - and I've also made some videos which required video&audio engineering, but this is so much different. I feel my head exploding from learning all the functions, while loops, range functions etc lol My thought is to go for frontend dev or mobile app dev. I'm suggested to finish the course, take an internship(probably base pay like 45-55k) and stay for 2 years, then move and within 3 years I could prolly hit 6 figures. What do you think? Where do you see this field in 5-10 years?
I’m currently in school for software engineering going into my sophomore year
Subbed man, great to have a black dev to stand behind on YT
Nice video. I am a college student about to graduate with a Bachelor's in Computer Science. I am currently looking for an internship in Software Development. Is there any advice that you have that may help me?
great info, thanks man
Me wanting to get into development watching this from my S21😭 nah but fr I think I'm gonna do this community college they teach swift and other stuff as part of the I.S. aas
Wow thank you for this. I was laid off at a dating app company last month after working there for 3.5yrs. They took a chance on me and hired me as a junior iOS dev with no prior experience, only a CS degree and a few portfolio projects. I absolutely struggled with: speaking up, participating in scrum/iOS dev check-ins, owning my tasks, and finding creative ways to contribute to the code base. Putting my ego aside and making time to sharpen my skills outside of work, would’ve saved a lot of time and headache. I also didn’t structure my life to encourage a work/life balance. I didn’t make time for hobbies and felt like I needed to be a work horse (while inefficiently handling tickets by staying stuck, and not researching properly), I didn’t use any vacation time until last November. All that together made me have less enthusiasm for the role. I didn’t want to look at code beyond the 8hrs spent working because I burnt myself out by not taking vacations/doing hobbies and not improving my skills. In February ago during a 1-on-1, I told my manager that I wasn’t passionate about the job and I just do it because it’s something I don’t mind doing for money in the meantime. 😅I’m sure that made they’re decision easier to lay me off along with the others. Watching your channel inspires me. I want to enjoy what I do. I didn’t “hate” coding, I just didn’t liked that I struggled and took long to figure stuff out. But of course that would happen since I wasn’t investing my craft during off-hours. Becoming more skilled and proficient would’ve helped me maintain a better attitude. I’m going to focus on strengthening my weak areas while looking for another role. Seeing folks like US in tech always lifts my spirit. I was the only black woman as an iOS dev at my former job and I typically hid from the camera when we had ios engineering meetings on Zoom because it was all men 😅. I gotta break out and be comfortable with myself amongst others too. Anyway, thank you for you wise words. I’m a new viewer and looking forward to diving into the archives of your channel. If you do consultations, I’d love to pick your brain. I’d pay the $$$. Peace ✌🏾 😊
Hello Kenny, it’s the best video I’ve heard so far. I’m new to the tech world and would like to hear more about your experiences. Do you mind to connect on LinkedIn? Thanks 😊
Started with SwiftUI and I've been learning it for months. Just started a UIKit project and I already HATE it soooo much 😭😭
Fake video this is not a real life of software engineer.
First "Day in the life of a software engineer" video without meetings included during many parts of the video lol, great content bro!
I am in school now to be software developer any advice
I want to be a blockchain developer
Thanks a lot for your video Kenny
Hi Ken, I am 48 and I am screwed! I got white hair already sprouting out, darn! Who is going to want to hire an old guy like me? Anyways, in all seriousness, I was joking. I've been learning web development for 10 months now and I am actually enjoying it now. But I am curious still about mobile and I would like to better understand what really is involved when it comes to making a mobile app. For the backend or memory management of the mobile app. What tends to be your process with memory management?Do you use API's for gathering the data? Firebase? Or does it depend on what you are creating? At the moment I am learning React which you can use the same logic to create mobile apps using React Native. I figured I can continue with Web Development and create mobile apps with React Native and if I like it maybe go native with either Kotlin or Swift, not sure yet. Or maybe by me learning React Native could this possible make me a better mobile developer later on? Thanks Ken for your excellent videos, I learn a lot when I watch them.
Great stuff, Kenny. Liked and subscribed.
Great Video bro💪.
Should i learn uikit and swiftui both?
I'm all in on SwiftUI. UIKit is tedious to develop with. No regrets.
First time seeing your vids. Cool subject matter and perspective. What are your socials?
Does one have greater potential for remote work or would they both be about the same? I'm more passionate about Android but also want the opportunity to work remotely at some point.
Honestly both are about the same. Either one you will have the opportunity to work remote. Android is also nice. It's super similar to iOS development now days.
Bro these sneakers be hitting! Yo I cant wait for the Red/White 11s and the Playoff 13s in February
Same here! Those two are def on my list to cop.
Excellent video G!!!!
Thanks Charles!!
Finished my 8 point ticket just to watch this vid
haha nice! Glad you was able to finish it. 😄
🔥 vlog, you gonna blow up
Thanks bro!!
This was a really cool video. It looked fun and the Ginger 14’s were clean! 💯
Thanks bro!!
You said it man, that Stanford course is something difficult for absolute beginners. Big mistake I made. Do you recommend any books for beginners?
Yes I totally agree. I would say big nerd ranch has some really good books. I use to always read their books.
as soon as I saw the jordan collection I was sure every word this man has said is TRUE!
haha thanks!!
I've tried Postman. Do you also use Insomnia to test your API requests?
I haven't used them before I will try them out.
Definitely agree with this. I love the flexibility and not being micro managed. And of course…… the pay 🤑
Indeed Charles!
Another great video. All these are great reasons to become a software engineer. I also love the fact that i can build something that is potentially life changing with just a keyboard and mouse lol
haha I totally agree!
You do a good work on youtube.
Thank you!
1. Lots of flexibility 2. Trust (work independence) 3. Great pay 4. Always learning (work is not repetitive) 5. Perks
Great video to keep me motivated right when I was needing it! Keep up the good work man.
Thank you! 🙂
How do you feel about 100 days of swift? Do you believe this course will get you job ready ?
I haven't gone through the course, but I have heard good things about it. As long as the course teach you the basics, and you feel comfortable enough to build out an app from scratch you should be good. I just recommend uploading an app to the store before applying anywhere. Trust me that will make a big difference on getting hired.
Great video
Thank you! 💪🏾
Finally! Another black iOS engineer in Atlanta like me we should link up one of these days I’m more in the Duluth area though
Nice! I would def be down for something like that! 👍🏾
Keep up the good work bro. I’m starting my 1st job as a developer. No CS degree, self taught, at the age of 41. Bruh, imposter syndrome is real. Lol
haha yea it's definitely real. Thanks bro!!
Which resources helped you the most while learning? Looking to get started on the journey.
@@martinm2001 I mainly used 2 resources. One is totally free the other required that I invest in myself. I used 100devs and Codingphase. For me, Codingphase helped out the most because of the teaching style.
@@oldirtybirdy2533 thanks

Thank you!!!
SwiftUI has two 2 to 3 problems such as ,not 100% native ,most of companies still on UIKit and MVVM is not working perfectly with SwiftUI .
I totally agree. Plus there really isn’t a solidified architecture for SwiftUI.
Definitely enjoy the content. And I'm taking advantage on some of these prices on sneakers.
Thanks bro! Yea I would def take advantage while the prices are low
Great content bro! Keep the videos coming!
Thank you! I definitely will!

My first ticket is an 8, they must hate me
Wow really. Man that sucks. I would never want to assign a 8 point ticket ticket to anyone new.
@@kennygrandberry8590 sigh , been working on it all week. All the view controllers are deprecated and there’s no documentation. I love it 😀
Great video and motivation G!
Thanks Charles!!
Another great video man! Keep them coming. I'm currently working on learning to code but I really enjoy the more way you talk about things on the job, such as all the references to tickets. Most videos I find they only talk about the learning process and nothing about what its like once you actually break into the field.
Thank you! I really appreciate that. Yea I want to give more insight into what really goes on once you become a software engineer vs just goin over the small basic things most people may already be aware of.
Hi! My hubby is black n iOS developer too in ATL. I’ve just started studying coding too! Thanks for video!
Nice!! We we need more in black iOS Developers. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Hey Kenny, can you name a few iOS dev meetup's please in nyc?
Sadly I don't know any meetup's in nyc since I don't live there.
