The Best Title Screen in Final Fantasy
Part 1. Playing through the original Final Fantasy for the NES with all the bugs and all the original everything. Playing on the NES Classic Edition. Today is all about getting started and figuring out WHY there's no true title screen in this game. The game near the beginning is not difficult, and with a little prep, you can run through the first boss as well.

My first impressions and short play of Balatro. A game I'm sure they would play on Yu-Gi-Oh, if they played poker instead of duel monsters. Watch me find all the Yugi / duel monsters references in this poker rogue-like, Balatro. Do you play card games? Are they on motorcycles? Did you understand that reference? Not yet, anyways. I know a lot of people would like to think there's a lot of consideration for the Legend of Zelda timeline, but really... I'm of the opinion that it's like Mario Bros. FF1 was actually my first to the series played the psp remake but still loved it when I was a kid lol
The neutrino musing reminds me of the first batch of machines from the US Dreamcast launch. They opted not to ground the input on the MIDI chip since the console didn't use the microphone. This caused the chip to pick up random background radiation and convert it into the ocassional input signal causing the machines to crash while playing certain games, most notably Ready 2 Rumble. (It was easier to patch the games than recall all the units.)
Every part of the original version of FF1 is broken. It's a wonder that the code runs at all. Of all the versions, it's the one I would recommend least.
@@pigs18 I definitely need to break out of PS1 version and compare.
@@dionelrThe quality of life improvements and code fixes make it like night and day. Just the run button alone is a ray of sunshine.
@@pigs18 I was definitely feeling the need for a run button 😆
On game bugs, one of the sad parts is that the specialty swords you get later, like the flame sword and ice sword, don't correctly apply their bonuses versus enemies weak to them. Thus they don't really do any significant more damage than usual.
And all the weapons are numbered in the lookup table. When it checks for critical hit percentage it pulls the weapon number instead. So the first weapon has a 1% critical hit rate and the Masamune, being in the last slot, gets a critical hit on nearly every single attack.
About the only real thing that keeps me from replaying the NES version on an emulator is the targeting interface not switching your target if you got an unplanned critical or miscalculated the remaining hp on your target. The overall speed of the game keeps me from going back to it on real hardware. Dawn of Souls on the GBA was imo, the best version of FF1.
@@MagicIsaacSage That is very true. Quite annoying that it doesn't retarget. I'm pretty sure all of the rereleased versions fix this. I never had a GBA, but I heard a lot of the FF remakes on it got special treatment.
Everyone knows FFVI was the best - because of Kefka's laugh
@@willfrankunsubscribed You know 6 was my favorite one. Last time I played it was only a year or two ago, and all the funniest glitches and things happened.
Honestly the shopping interface is the worst part of the game. The shop music is great thankfully, but man, being unable to buy multiple items at a time is so tedious. On top of that the game doesn't indicate who can equip what within it. I think (emphasis on think) that the manual had a reference for the things you can buy but that of course adds multiple steps that none of the later games required. I suspect later ports removed all of these inconveniences.
@@sdpc9182 I believe you are correct. I haven't had the manual in such a long time, so I don't remember. Not knowing what was for which class is crazy, but also not knowing in a new town if something was better than what you have.
I have played Final Fantasy - emulated NES-version, PS1-port and Pixel Remaster and latter two are practically the same. It is no wonder it became such a huge success as it is just great game for first entry - so much freedom of action (once ship and canoe have been gained) and party configurations. My lesson of party: Thief is useless and Red Mage's versatility gets less useful over time, but it can have most potent offensive spell: FAST. My personal angle says there must be one class capable of using black magic (Red or Black Mage) and White Mage is MANDATORY. Rest are physical attackers. Current playthrough on my channel uses Fighter, Black Belt, Black Mage and White Mage as party. Late-game items add versatility big time.
@@vksasdgaming9472 Oh yes. Great thinking of class composition there. I believe I have the PS1 version somewhere. I need to look for that and check out the differences.
@dionelr Artistically all versions of FF1 have disappointing (even with then-standards) final dungeon being just so EMPTY linear slog with nothing interesting. That would change with final dungeon becoming much more interesting in later entries with varying success as FF3 had very involved (and brutally long) final dungeon.

The Magic Book is in level 8. The Red ring is in the top-right corner of Level 9. Hilariously, I remembered the path to the items and Ganon, but I had a lot of trouble fighting him. You seem to have the opposite run. XD
@@thedigodragon The book is optional, so I didn't sweat it. I saw a video where they reviewed the game code and showed Ganon's movement and it's actually very simple. I was thinking of that when I fought him.
I noticed you try to sword the Dodongos. They're immune to the sword tho?
@@thedigodragon there's a trick to making them sword-able. I just remembered it wrong. You bomb them, then on the frame they eat the bomb, put a second bomb, if it stuns them then they become able to be sworded and they will 100% drop bombs.
Thanks for watching my video. What's your memory of Level 6? Is there a harder level?
It's the blue Wizrobes. They will wreck you like a water soluble sailboat.
What do you think of the Clever Seed Peter is playing through. Would play version of this game done like that too??
@@AmeliasArcade I wish I knew Zelda 1 better, but those difficult seeds would probably frustrate me. It wouldn't make for a good video. Now, there is a Zelda 2 fan remake that I'm debating on playing. We'll see.
Wonder if Nintendo would ever remaster the OG Zelda. Maybe to look a little similar to Link’s Awakening but as extreme toy look just polished maybe 💜
@@AmeliasArcade They did a SNES version for the satellaview service but it was Japanese only and lost to time.
@@dionelr ugh that’s sad
There are 5 overworld hearts and 8 dungeon hearts. And you start with 3. You can pick up 3 of 5 overworld hearts before entering any dungeon. In the 2nd quest I think you can only pick up 2 overworld hearts before any dungeon.
The question of how many hearts you need for the Magical Sword came up in my run too. I was not worthy on the first try. XD
Fun to watch you run through Zelda, and yeah, I also adore the decor of the level 5 dungeon. I think in terms of canon that the original Zelda is probably best thought of as its own thing. Its manual artwork is unique and the best that’s come out of the series, I think.
Hi there! Thanks for watching the video. How do you think Zelda 1 fits into the Zelda lore? Is it a problem that there's no Master sword? Does it matter? Sound off below.
In terms of writing Legend of Zelda is the genesis - the archetype that others follow and expand upon. It has it's own sequel (Adventure of Link) that does exactly that. Personally I feel that all Zelda-games are basically alternate realities which have only tenuous connection and so different rules that Ganon of one world is absolutely powerless in another if he could even survive the transition. Magical Sword is exactly that and as other magical swords and weapons would appear in series there would be indicator that magical sword used by Link is something special and thus Sword of Evil's Bane appeared - truly powerful weapon meant to one, specific task and user. Funnily enough Ganon's true weakness in this is NOT Magical Sword, but Silver Arrow instead. Of course some Zelda-games have explicit connection with each other like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask did as do Breath of The Wild and Tears of The Kingdom have.
Dude go kill a Gleeok 😅 it’s fun

@@ZumDeWald It's possible that it's leftovers from some testing. You wouldn't normally encounter these codes through normal play.
