Great conversation on a wide range of topics. On a personal level I'm once again struck by the fact that through the medium of technology we are able to connect with like minded people to whom we otherwise would never have been exposed. Throughout this conversation I kept thinking how lekka it would be to hang with you ous. It is a rare thing to be in the company of people with whom you can truly speak your mind, even if you are not always in agreement. As far as the content of the conversation is concerned the issue of identity is what stands out for me. I feel a constant struggle between my inherited and societally imposed default identity based in the body into which I was born and the place in which I was born and my values, ideas and world view which are very often at odds with those default identities. I believe firmly, if rather idealistically, that we have to forge new identities based on common values and ideals. The time at which identity based in those inherited default characteristics I mentioned were beneficial to harmonious and peaceful co existence, has I believe, largely passed. We need new identities based on what we think and what we value and not on the bodies into which we were born. On the other hand I realize that as you mentioned early in the conversation Charles, those default identities are still inexorably linked to the individuals access to resources. As long as that is the case none of us will be able to free ourselves from those default identities no matter how much we want to. This is a constant paradox which I face. In the South African context talk of the deconstruction of for example racial identity, coming from me, in a "white" male body, can and is often be construed as rainbowism. While I fully accept the necessity of confronting the current inequities caused by our default identities based on the accident of birth, I also believe that we should look ahead and start constructing a future in which those default identities become increasingly irrelevant. It's a very sensitive topic. We carry so much historical baggage. We can do better. We must do better. Thanks for the stimulating conversation.
