1. I imagined the world without me. I saw that my family and friends were distraught, but the entire world still went on. I think we often feel like the center of the world, combine that with a deep sense of duty, it’s a lot of pressure sometimes… this helped. 2. I thought of non existence. Everything I do everyday that feels mundane I will no longer do, and thus that I should savor all these days I still have - make every day, breath, class, lunch, random interaction count. It’s all meaningful in the context of death.

@@maxdepthpodcast Alchemy was a system of techniques that were used to attempt to control and manipulate the physical world in order to attain certain unattainable goals such as eternal life, coming back from the dead and transmutation of base metals into precious metals. Philosophy is the study of fundamental concepts such as knowledge, ethics, or existence. If you wish to lump in alchemy based then you'd need to add in physics and psychology.

@@PhokenKuul I was thinking about the non physical alchemy that i think the acts you mention were an embodied form of, and I was defining philosophy more as an overall system of thought than thoughts on a particular topic. Using these definitions do you think alchemy counts as a philosophy? Like “being kind to people is a good life philosophy” and “self exploration and searching for my purest soul is a good philosophy.” I am definitely over discounting the actually pre-chemistry alchemy.

@@maxdepthpodcast I dunno man, do you have some evidence or reputable source expounding spiritual alchemy? Because I suspect it's an apocryphal invention of the late modern occultists. Philosophy comes from Greek words, philos - love and sophia - wisdom, therefore love of wisdom. It is generally understood to be the systematic study of questions about knowledge, reality, ethics, aesthetics and politics. Whereas "a philosophy" is a way of saying, more or less, the way that one believes a person should live their life, the principles and ideologies to base one's life on. Assuming that there is such a thing as spiritual alchemy then according to the latter you could call it a philosophy. But your video stills mentions concepts such as utilitarianism and existentialism, which are more like the former being systems by which to examine questions of ethics and reality respectively.

@@myfte 1. They talk about God being eternal and unchanging in lots of religious traditions. 2. If you talk about “Spinoza’s God” ie. Nature, then God is constantly changing. 3. When do you consider the last time God “interfered”? 4. If you are asking me what I think… I think we are all splinters of God (the monotheistic perspective of the Upanishads) and so we try to build the world in a way that is consistent with our knowledge of what we think the highest power would see fit.

⁠@@myfteWell there are two views, that God is a comfort mechanism and that God is a meaning mechanism. Comfort in having an explanation for the strange world we live in, meaning is an understanding of why we live. (This is my interpretation btw). Science replaced God in many of the ways we used to use God as a way to explain the deeper questions: Evolution, astrophysics, neuroscience.

@@maxdepthpodcast I see where you are coming from. But God could also be a child playing with a toy, and we are just a simulation that God is currently toying with. We can outright say science replaced God if we start with the idea that God is limited to just an idea in our mind.
