2024 Kayak Highlights
All the best bits from this years paddling adventures including Norwich, Cambridge, Dudley, Walton and the Stour of course. I was suffering badly with my hip and thigh injury at the start of the year and tbh its still an issue, so no Lee Valley or white water antics this year.

Tyne TSK Skin on Frame Kayak Restoration

This is a brief look at the restoration of my Tyne TSK skin on frame kayak. As you can no longer purchase a new skin from the manufacturer (this kayak is 50 years old). I purchased a ballistic nylon kit from America. After removing the skin and replacing a few rotten bits of wood in the stern, I then had to sand, stain and varnish all the wood. Kayaking from Thorpe green to cow tower and back on the river Yare and Wensum in historic Norwich, a fine city and a beautiful day 2-6-2024. Interestingly a few months after I recorded this video people magnet fishing from the 14th century Bishop bridge hauled in a WW2 German incendiary bomb. Dont let that stop you paddling. Kayaking Colchester Castle Weir

To mark the first anniversary of the middle mill weir collapse at Colchester castle park. Here's a little video of kayaking over the weir and surfing the wave. Sadly although the council is hoping to clear the debris and repair the bridge in April there is no news on reinstating the weir.

Ive just finished restoring my Tyne TSK. This included removing the old worn out skin, sanding the frame and then staining and varnishing it. Camped at Wassell Grove Campsite Friday and Saturday night in my Mini micro camper. Glamping was also available. Lovely venue with a great view across the valley, nice walk around the fishing lakes, lamas and geese a plenty. Very slippery shower room so be careful. On the water for 9am Saturday morning. Kayaking Cambridge Backs 2-6-2024

Ticked one off the bucket list and had a fantastic paddle in the historic city of Cambridge. Setting off from a lovely little drop in (literally) in the beautiful countryside we then headed into the city as far as Jesus Green. Dodging the punts was fun. Plenty of cows, geese, swans, signets, ducks, heron and a snake. Great location, weather and company.

First time on the water after my hip injury. Paddling was ok. But as soon as I tried to play at Langham the stress on my leg was to much. So I stopped. Great to be on the water though. And I saved a life
Paddle Power 2023 Highlights

A brief highlight video of this years paddling. Lee valley was good not sure how I stayed upright. Paddled a lot on the stour which was nice its such a beautiful stretch of water. We did paper mill lock a few times which was good too. I managed to complete a roll which had me laid up and off work for a week. Im still limping so we'll see how that goes. I havnt ventured out since.

Rebecca, Ellie and myself finish off the summer with a gentle paddle on the river Chelma at Paper Mill Lock. Beautiful day with what could be the last of the summer sunshine. Practiced synchronized seal launching a few times which worked well but i think the helmet cam would get a better shot of it. Nearly came a cropper right at the end. But another successful brace saved me getting wet.

I love 7:58 - haha! 12:39 - look at you! The face of determination, then shock :D Loved 1:47 - that was a great paddle! Amazing to have all those shots of that weir now it's gone. I'll never forget going in there 1:10 - the fear I'd get stuck turning around. Great video Jay. Make sure you don't lose your paddle or kayak in 2024!
Unfortunately the camera switched off and missed you nearly getting stuck in the weir. I did enjoy the race Chris just had me at the end. I thought I might fall in reaching for my paddle LOL Im glad you convinced me to do LV again. Ive another clip showing how im stuck in an eddy because im fighting the current and you just slide in and around me and out again like a graceful swan
How did you find the crossover there?
Not sure I understand what you mean. Im very new to whitewater. I just try to make it through alive. Ive been to Lee Valley a handful of times TBH I may not go there again due to the thieving corrupt parking charges

OMG sorry of course you mean the crossover kayak. Im a dumb arse sorry. As for the Ethos at LV I think its great. But its what im used to, I use it for pretty much everything. I do have a Jackson playboat but ive never taken it to LV. It would be nice having something a little smaller than the Ethos But it wouldnt get enough use. @@davidcross30
Great video, I am doing the INtro to white water there on Thursday, i also have Ethos (9), what size spray deck did you need for the peak, is it a Big deck or Huge, please? I think its a big but i need to make sure :)
LV is great Ive done it a few times although im not very good (ive got other videos on here and tik tock, same name). Mine is the Ethos Ten as you probably know my deck is Huge. Both the Ethos and the Peak deck are great. Please be careful of parking when we went again in august and we all got fined for exceeding 4hrs free parking, even though it gives you 8hrs when you log in 🤬
This was such a good day and was so grateful to get out there with you. Ellie was too. I think barrel role is a good term for it! The first roll I did, my left knee clicked as I came up, it looks absolutely fine here. It was so slowww! 4:44 - you're almost smiling there! :D Something I always find odd (good odd) with your videos when I'm out with you, is like reliving something from a slightly different perspective. It's like an out of body experience in a way <3.
It really was a fantastic day. Thank you for setting it up. Its a lovely stretch of river, the sun was shining and you and Ellie were perfect company. So plenty to smile about :) Your rolls are perfect and graceful on a slow moving river. You dont hang about at Lee Valley though lol I left some good footage out due to conversations and I didnt want to drop some royalty free music over it. Dont worry we shall paddle again Princess :)
Langham Flumes at 10:40 - looks like there wasn't much flow that day though
Yeah as you probably know this river doesnt have much flow in the summer months. Ive had to get out and walk stretches in the past so could be worse. I thought Id show people exactly what to expect upstream of the flumes as it often gets asked.
You might have found it easier to park and launch from Hellesdon mill .
Nice to see the river from that perspective, i hope to do a bit of that in a inflateable boat this year.
Its a fantastic river. Lovely out in the country and still an amazing paddle through the city.

Thanks Im pretty pleased with the quality underwater. I was going to do more at LV but the water wasnt as clear as our last visit.
Just watched this through - goodness me. I really wasn't prepared for that first drop! You can see that my boat gets stuck in the swirl... was stuck about 10 minutes frustratingly - lost so much time that session. Made me feel better as I had no idea that so many of us capsized that first go - it was hard wasn't it?! So cool to have this!
I think I definitely benefit by having a bigger kayak. You and Amanda got bounced around a bit. Good job you didnt take Barbie lol. Imo it was harder this time. But you're brave and wont let a little water stop you. I can give you the file and you can reframe it so the camera follows you round in the eddy which looks cool

First proper river roll!!!!!! 14:59 - so proud of her. 12:37 I love how we realise you're going downstream again, so we get up and run! You don't scream as often as you used to lol Yes you can hear that you scrap the river bed in the first roll. But it doesn't matter you righted yourself. Second roll was brilliant :)
Looks amazing. I'd love to go to Lee Valley too one day.
It was a real challenge for someone of my capabilities but im glad i went.
