Tokyotique
Japan
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 21 มิ.ย. 2016
Hi! I’m Michelle, a half Japanese Tokyoite who thrifts for both resale and for keeps.
This is a "come thrifting/antiquing with me" channel with the focus mainly on homeware, ceramics, ornaments and traditional folk craft.
We will be visiting thrift/vintage/antique shops and markets within Tokyo, and beyond.
"Tokyotique" was the name of my Mercari Japan account ("Tokyo" + "Boutique") when I first started the shop.
Hope you enjoy coming along and seeing what I find!
PLEASE NOTE:
THIS IS NOT A TRAVEL INFORMATION DESK😓Due to the high volume of inquiries, I am unable to respond to queries regarding markets, second-hand shops, other info for your Japan itinerary. This also applies to messaging on Instagram.
Although there is an educational slant, this channel is for light entertainment only.
Should you require item identification, please refer to an expert or specialist.
Many thanks for your kind understanding!

FUDATEN SHRINE ANTIQUE MARKET - A SERENE ANTIQUING experience in Tokyo✨+ Mini Haul & Shrine Festival
Today we are visiting the Fudaten Shrine Antique Market in Chofu on the western side of Tokyo.
Held on the *second* Sunday of each month from 7am-3pm, this is a smaller market with around 50 stalls.

This may be fast becoming one of my favourite antique markets. The ambience of the trees and birdsong makes for a serene experience which I personally enjoy!

Thank you so much for watching and hope you enjoy the content🥰

Wonderfully serene and informative. Antique markets are our favourite thing to do in Japan and we have travelled near and far for the experience. Thank you for your content ….always feel transported
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment! Aw that's lovely to hear it feels like you're visiting the market in person. This one's particularly charming! Hope you can venture to it on one of your trips to Japan😊
Your laugh has a charming quality that reminds me of Scarlett Johansson’s laugh. Anyway, it’s so fascinating to see these markets. I feel like I’d want to buy everything there! You should upload stuff more often :)
Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment😊Takes so long to make each video, if only I had the time!
I have just found your page and I LOVE your content! My family loves thrift and antique shopping and when I went to Japan with a friend last year I was very excited to have stumbled upon two different small antique roadside shops while wandering around. Some of my favorite souvenirs came from those shops! I'm going back again next year with my brother, and what does he want to do while there? Thrift! At first I was sad that our top two markets we'd like to hit will land on days that we're probably not going to be able to do both of them, due to what city we'll be traveling in on those set days. Thought we'd have to pick one and be sad to miss the other, BUT! Your page is showing me that there are so many other different antique and flea markets that we could go to instead! Thank you for showing us all these markets!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and hope you have a wonderful time thrifting and antiquing when you visit again next year!😊🎶
Had to watch this again as I’m going to Fudaten today. Honored and privileged to be in beautiful Japan and to engage with its awesome and welcoming citizenry. I may never go home! Thank you once again for your content which is both informative and joyful.
Hi Nancy! Super happy to hear you’ve been enjoying your time in Japan and also that the weather held up for your market visit today! Glad you’re checking out Fudaten as the atmosphere is so relaxing and has more of a local market feel than the larger ones. Look forward to hearing what treasures you find!🥰
Just wondering if there are any thrift markets in late dec in Tokyo that’s worth to visit?
Most likely!😊Lists for markets are in a link in the description box below. Thanks!
Thank you so much!
I’m a new subscriber and I love your knowledgeable videos! Could you please talk more about the Laquerware? (I feel that’s so unique to Japan and would love to learn more about it ~ especially what one might find in the thrifting world!)
Thank you for another kind message!💕
Love your videos as I very much enjoy flea markets all over the world! Now I can learn more about what’s on offer! 💕 Could you show & talk about Laquerware? Thanks for these great videos!
Thank you for watching and for your kind comment🥰I’ve shown lacquerware before, mainly Kamakura-bori style as we get that in this region the most😊
We are a bunch of American dudes :) from the New England area.... just would like you to know that not only we thought you have a graceful voice but we also enjoyed the way you talked as well... very soothing, gentle and most of all feminine.
Thank you and your friends for watching and for your kind words! Like so many of us, I'm not so fond of listening to my own voice😅so I'm super grateful for your encouraging comment in that regard! Many thanks again😊
I am a big fan of your videos and you describe everything so well. I am learning a lot. Thank you! ♥
Thank you so much for your kind comment! I appreciate it very much!🥰
That meme-face kokeshi was absolutely adorable. 😂
Hilarious and cute!😍😂
Love the mini Kokeshi. ❤ thanks for another great video.
Hi Sara! Thank you so much for watching as always🥰Mini kokeshi are so adorable aren’t they 😍
I'm Japanese. I'm currently learning English. Your voice is warm and gentle, and very pleasant to listen to. So it's a great learning experience. Thank you.
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind and thoughtful comment😊Your written English is perfect so I'm sure you speak it very well too! Thank you again and best of luck in your studies✨
Michelle, I'm loving your videos! I was wondering if you'd consider doing a video on identifying the different types of regional pottery that you often identify while shopping. It's so cool to hear your expertise! Thank you for an awesome, relaxing channel ❤
Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment!🥰Won’t be making specific “how to identify” videos at this time as I’m not an expert. But I always share snippets of info I know or research as I go along in the videos😊
Another delightfully informative video. I'm amazed by your knowledge. I wonder if you could make a video explaining how you identify the kokeshi types.
Thank you so much!😍I have my reasons why I don't make specific "how to identify" content, even though those types of videos have a far wider reach and more views. Will sometimes add a bit of identification at the end though, like the short synopsis about woodblock prints in the Jimbocho video. Already filmed some kokeshi footage so there'll be some info (in brief) at some point!
Thank you for your explanations. My husband is Japanese but takes forever to translate for me ! I love everything you pick up at these markets. We live in Canada and everytime we visit family in Japan I have to think about what I can carry back in my suitcase. 😢
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment! I've had tour guests in the past who come to Japan with clothes they can throw out after wearing to make space for everything they want to take home!😄Hope you find some more lovely items on your next visit to Japan🥰
So interesting. Incredible bargains. I wouldn't have been able to use the restraint you did. I loved seeing your purchases together at the end.
Thank you so much for another lovely comment🥰There's very little space in our Tokyo homes so I try to be selective...however, during the edit I'm constantly saying "ugh, you totally should've bought that!"😅Thank you again for watching😊
Similar aluminum bento boxes where used in Sweden as lunch boxes. They where put in a kind of oven that was on lower temperature in the morning and then they where warm by lunchtime.
Oh how interesting! I wonder what kind of food was in the boxes. Here it would’ve been rice-based. Thank you so much for watching and for your comment!😊
What treasure! I really appreciate your pace, giving us a good look at things. Your commentary is wonderful. Great variety of objects as well. Your videos are really exceptional in quality and content. And the Japanese are fantastic artists in every medium. You mentioned your art channel which I'd like to see too. What is it called?
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind encouraging comment🥰This market’s so aesthetically beautiful it’s great to film! I have a fluid art channel which I started during the pandemic but not so active on there these days😅It’s called @michellenagisaart 🌸😊
The way you framed the print with the tassles looks really neat.
Thank you so much Rachel!😍
Great haul! Can’t wait to find Kokeshi when I go to Japan in 3 weeks.💕
Thank you so much! Hope you find some lovely ones during your visit!😍
Just added this to the description box as a note for when you're heading back out of Chofu, but in case it's missed I'll put it here too. Chofu station's platforms are on different levels which can be a bit confusing. Always check the information signs carefully before heading to a platform/boarding a train. If in doubt, ask a stationmaster at the ticket gate first😊
Oh no! So many competing markets on Sun Nov 10 when I’ll be in Tokyo. Wonder if I can make it to this one at Fudaten Shrine AND the big one at Tokyo Intl Forum on same day. I think there’s also one at Tomioka Hachiman Shrine too. I’ll be busy but very happy! Love love love the drumming ceremony, esp. since it featured women percussionists. Is that unusual? What a great and joyful event. Once again, thanks for sharing your wonderful vlogs. I learn so much.❤
Hi Nancy! Fudaten is from 7am-3pm, Oedo (Intl Forum) is from 9am-4pm (officially, but some stalls start packing around 1-2pm). Are you an early riser? If so, perhaps Fudaten first for a peaceful morning, then onto Oedo...the latter is always crowded and although a beautiful market, definitely caters more for tourists, both from abroad and domestic. Alternatively, you could hit Oedo at 9am, leave at 11am and arrive Chofu/Fudaten around 12pm. Again, some stalls there may start packing up from 1pm, but it's a much smaller market and could be a nice palate cleanser after all the humans at Oedo😊If you're a walker, then Jindaiji Temple is about another 20min walk from there. You could do that after and enjoy one of their many soba noodle shops for a late lunch. For transfer between the two, could be easier to use Otemachi station instead of Yurakucho (this is for the Intl Forum), then you only need to use 2 trains. Marunouchi line (Metro) and the Keio Line (change at Shinjuku station). This'll make you feel better...Tomioka antique market is NOT operating for all of November✨ Thank you so much for your support from the channel's humble beginnings. I always truly appreciate your heartfelt comments🥰Hope you have a marvelous time here Nancy!❤️
@@tokyotique thank you for your insight. I’m def an early riser so I think I can make it to both. Really appreciate the advice. All the best to you.
Wow, finally found you. Love the things you're looking at and your knowledge. Appreciate you telling us and spelling the Japanese words for us. I'm going to look all your videos. Great photography too.
Thank you so much for finding the channel and for your lovely comment! Super happy you enjoyed this market and found the additional information useful🥰Thank you again for your kind words!😊
Hi. I love your videos. You come over as such a lovely person. We’re going to be I. Tokyo (from Scotland) from Sunday 3rd to Monday 11th November. We always go to the Oedo market, but are there any others you would recommend? I think we miss the you’re a few. Thank you. Ali
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment. This market is held on the second Sunday of the month…so while you’re here (Nov 10)!! It’s a much more cozy experience than Oedo, less stalls (around 50) and not touristy. Another small market that will be operating while you’re in Tokyo is Sugamo Flea, on Mon 11/4. I’m fond of this one too. There are a couple links in the description box of all videos that list markets in Tokyo which you can check against the dates you’re here. Hope that helps and that the weather is good while you’re here!☀️
@@tokyotique Fantastic. That’s really appreciated. Thank you 🙏
So nice and peaceful hearing the birdsong 😊❤
Hi Helle! Thank you so much🥰The birdsong definitely added to the relaxing ambience of this market🎵So glad you enjoyed hearing it!💞
New subscriber ❤
Thank you so much for watching and for kindly subscribing!🥰
Very interesting, as usual! I love the sound of birdsong at temples. I'm visiting Japan soon, so I'm going to try to go thrifting and antiquing. Thanks for all your interesting commentary and recommendations.
Hi Rachel! Thank you very much for watching as always🥰Oooh how exciting you’re coming here soon. Hope you can visit a market or two while you’re here and pick up some lovely items to take home with you!😊
I really love all of your videos 💞if its ok may i know your mercari account? I want to buy one of your thrifted items 😅
Hi Kathy! Thank you so much for watching as always😍The reason why I don’t advertise my Mercari Japan account on here because it’s not only focused on Japanese antiques and vintage - I sell everything and anything on there I’m including second-hand items my family no longer need😊Most of the recent Japanese vintage I’m picking up is going in the international shop (website almost done). Was there something specific that you’d like to purchase? I think we’re connected on Instagram maybe? If so we can chat there. Thank you so much for inquiring!🥰
Prefer the birdsong and natural sounds. Thanks. Very interesting
Thank you for so much for watching! Glad you liked the birdsong😊
I find your videos very soothing. It's just the way you do things I suppose. I don't know but I've never experienced this before. Thank you. I will keep coming back.
Aw thank you so much Peter! What a lovey comment. Very much appreciate your kind words🥰
Another great video, thank you. I wonder why you don't have more subscribers as you have a good eye, give valuable information and your filming is really good. I think I'll recommend your videos to some of the US resellers (not on my subscription list) who are clueless when it comes to Japanese antiques and collectables. I rarely watch them as they drive me crazy when they reach over an amazing Japanese item and pick up an object that is 'fun or cute'. I love old Japanese photographs and purchased several beautiful albums at Oi.
Thank you as always Heather! That's very kind of you🥰The channel is super new, only started this January with not that many videos published (takes about 30hrs to edit so haven't been able to post as consistently as I'd like). I also watch reseller videos from other countries and stop and pause the video when I spot a Japanese treasure! Old photographs are such a joy to find, especially in our increasingly digital age😊
I can’t tell you how much enjoyment I get from your commentary. Some of my happiest memories of my trips to Japan were the flea markets. I scored some great personal finds but how I wish I really understood what I was looking at way back then. Thank you!
Aw thank you so much Deb for your kind encouraging words🥰So happy to hear you had many special moments visiting our markets! Thank you again for watching😊
何時もありがとう。木彫りの阿弥陀如来はす晴らしいと感じました。こけしも、かわいいですね。
いつもビデオをご覧いただき、ありがとうございます。木彫りの阿弥陀如来、とても気に入っております🥰
So many treasures! What a wide range of interesting things. I learned a lot too. The glass plate negative and photo are amazing. I agree the glass plate needs light. The IKEA frame is a good solution. I really liked the papier-mache things. Particularly the yomeiri ningyo. What was the square wood box/container with a crank or handle at 6:29? Do you know? I love the Showa era aluminum bento boxes. I collect bento boxes. I also thought the lock with the prawn on it was pretty interesting. Were those animation cels at 14:49? I didn’t recognize the character but it looked like anime. The ukiyo-e ehon may be my favorite. 😊 thanks for a great video! ❤
Hi Jenny! Thank you so much for watching the video and all the items so closely!😍Hadn't seen anything similar to the square wood box with handle before, so did a Google Search. It's an old-school measuring tape! You may have noticed there was a hole in the side? A piece of rope comes out of that that which was used to make the measurements😊You're correct about the pictures being animation cels. I'm not sure from which anime either. I'll have to let the ukiyo-e ehon seller know! He'll be super happy to hear it was your favourite in the video!🥰
@@tokyotique wow! I never would have guessed it was a tape measure! I thought it was for grinding something. Amazing. Please do let the seller know the books are my favorite! 😊
Always look forward to your videos. So informative and wonderfully filmed
Thank you so much for your lovely words and continuing to view the content. Your encouraging comment means a lot!🥰
Camden Market is unrecognisable, it’s filled with lots of London tourist shops, hardly any antiques, such a shame I miss it so much 😮 We went to Tokyo last year! What a wonderful place, with wonderful people!!! I can’t wait to go back
Oh noooo, so sad to hear about Camden Market. Lived within walking distance some 20 years ago so expected some change, but sounds like the character of the place has been lost😞Thank you for letting me know Michelle! Super happy you loved your experience in Tokyo last year! Yes, you'll have to visit again!🥰
@@tokyotique The antique market is still there in the Stables & the stall where you can buy those vintage postcards. Got some in my visit last December. But @michellebelden1867 is right, there are so many touristy stalls selling the same tatt, just bypass them to get to the good stuff 🤗
watching this and imagine urself going there, buying some antique and decorating ur home... wht a sweet dream to dream...
Thank you so much Yuki! Happy you enjoyed this market and the antiques shown!🥰
Thank you greatly. Can’t wait to attend this market on Nov 16 when I’ll be in Tokyo! Hopefully, it won’t rain. Fingers crossed!
Hi Nancy❣️Oh yay! Hope the weather's good the entire time you're visiting😊 I'm sure you'll find some lovely treasures at Yamato market. It's less commercial than Oedo market and generally better-priced. Looking forward to hearing what treasure you find!🥰
I would love to go there. Such beautiful things.
Thank you so much for your comment🥰Hope you can visit some of Japan's markets sometime!😊
Oh, I want to see that Hasui Blue directly from my eye... I need it...
Absolutely! You won't be disappointed😊Thank you so much for watching and for your comment🎶
So glad to see you back! Do you take anyone with you on your shopping expeditions? To help carry things or help with filming while you browse?
Hi Jenny! Thank you so much for coming back to the channel🥰If filming, I go on my own as it can take a long time to take footage, waiting to make sure I'm not in the way of other shoppers. I usually take a large backpack to keep my hands free😊
I'm so glad you are back I love your content
Aw thank you so much for your support Natasha!🥰Should be another market video up this week😊
Superb knowledge of Japanese saleable wares. Very interesting
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment!😊
Such a beautiful market! You are so knowledgable - how did you learn all of this?
Thank you so much for watching!🥰A lot of things I’m already familiar with, being half Japanese and born here…everything else is through research😊
Those kokeshi dolls are just beautiful…..can’t wait to start my own collection
Thank you so much for watching!🥰Be warned…once you open that door to kokeshi collecting, it’s hard to stop😁They’re just too cute😍
Love the videos, hope you keep them coming. Great to learn about what Japanese markets look like. Car Boot season has wrapped up here in the UK pretty much.
Thank you so much for watching and for your encouraging comment!🥰Hope you find some treasure before the Car Boot season completely ends!

Thank you so much for watching and for your very kind comment Peter!😊
Thank you. Another great video. I was in Japan for all of September and also found the heat very challenging. I like to hear the prices in yen as that means more to me than US dollars..
Hi Heather! Thank you so much and hope you enjoyed your September visit🥰 Exactly, it was a loooong sweaty summer. In terms of yen prices, they're always already in the video footage, on labels and signs which is where I make conversions from. The second most country I'm watched from, believe it of not...is Japan. So local residents also look at the yen within the footage. This particular video had less close ups because it was too hot to be near the concrete ground for long, the items themselves were baking, and my hands were sweating😁Have a good weekend!✨
