HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH STARS FROM AN AIRPLANE – USING YOUR PHONE
To make your plane a "stratospheric observatory" for astrophotography you just need your cell phone and follow 10 simple steps. I demonstrate how to shoot images of winter star constellations and even deep sky objects (Orion Nebula, Milky Way) during a November flight from US to Europe using an iPhone. Key for success is not to just take one image, but a sequence of 20-30 images - which can be automatically aligned and added up using a stacking software for post-processing.
Caveats: Cell phones often use jpg compressed image formats of limited dynamic range, which can result in oversaturated star patterns. You may try a digital camera and/or image in raw format. Shutter speeds are limited to plane movements before blur occurs (typically less than a second), but slight differences in orientation can be compensated by the stacking software.

Imaging comet C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS) and deep sky objects with an ASKAR FRA500/Sigma fp combination
มุมมอง 7362 ปีที่แล้ว
Comet C2017 K2 (PanSTARRS), which cannot be spotted with the naked eye, turned out to be a perfect test object for my new ASKAR FRA 500, f/5.6 astrograph. I combined the ASKAR with a compact full-frame SIGMA fp digital camera and stacked multiple short exposures (using Siril). Despite the lack of a precise tracking mount and suburban conditions I succeeded in generating decent images of the com...
Combining the LEICA CL with a MEADE ETX 90 Beginner’s Telescope
มุมมอง 4.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Compactness of the LEICA CL with an APS-C sensor favors this camera to be combined with an equally compact beginners telescope, like the MEADE ETX 90 (a Maksutov-Cassegrain system). What is the resulting image quality for terrestrial and astrophotography? Or is it a mismatch? I share my experiences imaging craters on the moon, sun spots and the Orion nebula M42, an unexpected optical repair, an...
Urban Astrophotography with the LEICA CL
มุมมอง 1.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I share my impressions about the LEICA CL for astrophotography. The CL with an APS-C sensor provides a stellar performance if combined with the SIGMA 65mm F2 DG DN Contemporary lens, which is particularly suitable for deep sky imaging under non-ideal conditions, for instance in light polluted areas close to a city. Image stacking with the SIRIL software is also key to generate hig...

I’m thinking of getting an adapter too . I haven’t been using my 90 etx for 12 years now 😅. I have use my questar every now and then because the mechanic is very robust .

Hi, This is a very concise and informative video. I bought an used Meade ETX90 and Bogen tripod and video head for $50 from Facebook marketplace! The fork was broken but the optics are in pristine condition! I'd removed the fork and was wondering if I should use it as a spotting scope, but I'll consider your recommendations with the Iriin mount. Two weeks later, I also bought a second telescope, a Meade ETX125 Premier Ed with deluxe tripod a Meade SP 26mm Series 4000 eyepiece and Autostar controllerfor $150! A deal like those are very hard to beat, I guess! How did you removed the front lens mount on the ETX90? Mine has some dust for being left on a garage without the eyepiece cover. No big deal, but I want to clean it. Otherwise, the OTA looks almost new!

Rd step #10, there are several methods for merging/blending images. Stars are bright on dark background, adding an image with uniform areas like the sky is easy. However, you will need to remove stars in those areas where they bleed through obstructions (like the wings). You could actually try out the transparency function in ppt for merging two images.

Glad you enjoyed it! I used a moderate phone (iPhone SE), there are advanced phones you can operate in night mode which should provide superior results.
