Which standard did your test abide by?
The equipment by itself doesnot confirm to any standard. Standards such as ASTM / ISO / USP are basically TEST METHODS. These test methods are basic guidelines on how to perform Leakage Testing for different types of packages. The equipment can comply with ALL of them. Do you have any specific test method / standard in mind ?
Tape used
this test is to "Test" the tape that you manyfacture or buy. So "Tape Used" = "Your Product" (That you make/sell or buy)
In the testing process, the ball's travel should be measured from the first touchdown of the ball on the adhesive. Furthermore, it is imperative that we do not touch the ball with bare hands
What is the threshold value? How can we guess at which pressure the test has passed?
You dont have to guess anything. Initially the load starts to increase on the carton. When the carton cannot withstand the load anymore, it starts to collapse / buckle. The force starts to reduce. Threshold Value is the percentage of force reduction you want to allow before the machine auto stops. So basically if the peak force of a carton is 500 kgf and the reading falls by 10% (50 kgf), the machine will stop and the test is completed. Now if we set the threshold to 20%, the machine will wait for a reduction of 20% from 500. i.e. 100 kgf before stopping. This doesnot change the Peak or Result. It only defines when to stop "After" the peak is achieved. Hope we were able to help today.
@@PackTestMachinesInc Got it, thank you
But why can I find nowhere online what exactly a good Cobb rating is?
That is because there is no such source of info. COBB is a value and whether the value is suitable to you depends highly on what you are using the Paper for ? Is it for Printing or Corrugation or forming Paper Cores, etc. Even if its printing, it depends on the type of ink or machine. Eg. Printing Currency Notes vs printing a magazine vs printing a news paper, all require different COBB values. And because of this virtually unlimited applications, there will be no one who can give you a definitive value for ALL applications. Something (COBB Value) that may work perfect for "You" may not work for someone else. You need to adopt a reverse engineering approach. Take the sample of paper which is known to "work" well. Test the COBB. Make it your benchmark. Hope I was helpful today.
@@PackTest Ah. What about for books? There must be a chart somewhere...
@@Flat_Earth_Sophia Hello Addison, I am afraid there is non. Atleast to the best of knowledge and belief (and understanding on how we work on ASTM/TAPPI standard development committees :) )
Rather than saying we (At TAPPI / ASTM) dont want to establish standard values, I would say its a herculean task to do so. Next to impossible due to the sheer variety of papers / inks / machinery / applications.
@@PackTestMachinesInc Then what is the point of the test, if the numbers mean nothing?
Hi, thank you for the explanation. I still don't understand. When I use the compression strength? should I request that number to the supplier or can I determine the gsm for liners and flute (including flute type) based on compression strength value
If you are a corrugated carton buyer, you just have to tell your supplier that this is my box dimension and this is the compression strength I need. Let him worry about what flute type, flute qty and GSM he needs to use to achieve the compression strength you need. There is no easy formula, only an experienced Corrugator will have the data available to help him reverse engineer the specifications from your compression strength and dimensions.
Imagine wanting to make a house. You will tell the builder that I need a 4 bedroom house with 2 floors and 6 people will be living in it with these many bathrooms / kitchens / common room, etc. You wont tell him what type and how much cement, steel and wood to use. Will you ? Imagine if you do give all the details and the house doesnot turn up the way your expected, can you blame the builder ? The builder knows what to do. So does the corrugated box maker (when it comes to corrugated boxes ofcourse). Lets remain focused on the destination and not the path to the destination. You will be happier and safer that way.

Any graph?
No logical need for a graph. The vibration tester creates a condition of vibration. The result is a visual "effect" of the vibration.
Is this machine can test Nps coating?

If that's the case, that everyone has to specify his COBB range, what value does the test have? How can we verify the claims of a manufacturer who claims low absorbency against the standard if there are no absolute values that define as precisely as possible what the correct value is for the same type of paper/cardboard or at least in the same group of paper?
Yes, you have to know what value you want. Otherwise if the test says this is 30 COBB, how do you know if that is correct paper for your application ?. When you say "low" absorbency, it is very subjective. "Low" for you maybe "High" for me. or it could be "too low" for someone else. The way forward for you is : 1) Check what is the COBB value for your current supply. Now atleast you have a starting point. Let us say this value is X. 2) Then see if that paper is giving you any trouble. Analyse the problem being faced. If you think the paper should absorb less, then you can tell your vendor that you need a COBB value lower than X. Or you can try different papers and identify which paper (and its COBB value) is performing best for your application. 3) Make that value as YOUR OWN standard. I am sorry but the answer you seek from me is not available with anyone in the world. There can be no "Single Standard" or no agency (like ISO or ASTM or BIS etc) who can say that X COBB is correct and Y COBB is not correct. Because X may be right for some applications and Y may be right for some other applications.
The test process is clear and understandable, but what is the correct value after the test? That is, what are the absorption parameters that show whether the paper is normal and resistant to absorption or not? What amount of water absorbed is considered a normal value and what is not? Your help is very important.
Interesting Question. Unfortunately there is no straight answer to this. Every different application will need a specific type of paper with a specific COBB value (range). Eg. Blotting Paper has a very high COBB value (it can absorb the most). On the other hand Glassine Paper or Parchment Paper or Currency Note Paper have very low COBB value (it resists water absorption). So is low value correct or is high value correct ? Its application dependant. Corrugation Paper will have different values compared to the paper used to manufacture Paper Cores / Tubes. Paper that is to be printed needs a different COBB. Infact even the type of printing processes that will be used may need different COBB values. The buyer of paper needs to specify what he wants. And if he still faces issues in processing, then he needs to increase / decrease the COBB requirement accordingly. There is no "One Size Fits All" concept with COBB. Neither is "Higher The Better". Hope I was able to satisfy your query today.

How if the kgf converted to kg/cm2, what would be the exact number of the std?
Hello Ferdinand. I am not sure I understood your query correctly. The Pouch Compression Tester tells you the amount of FORCE that the pouch can withstand. This can be in Kgf or Lbf or Newtons. Do you want to measure the internal pressure of the pouch ? Then you can probably use the Leak Burst Tester th-cam.com/video/fogmJWFdNs0/w-d-xo.html if you let me know what product you wish to test, I can send a product video closest to your requirement.
@@PackTest hi thank you for the reply, in my factory somehow we use 3 kg/cm² or 3 bar to press the packaging. im wondering the equivalency between using bar uom and kgf uom
@@ferdinandgerry6381 When you are PRESSING a pouch, the effect Force is to be known. When you apply a 3 Kg/cm2 air pressure to a pneumatic clylinder it generates a force. The force calculation is pretty simple. Pascal's law states that Pressure = Force/Area or Force = Pressure x Area. Where force is the action on the pouch, pressure is the one being supplied to the cylinder (i.e. 3 kg/cm2) and Area is the cross sectional area of the cylinder. You can check what type of cylinder is being used or simply measure the inner diameter (bore dia) of the clinder and calculate the area (Pi x r2). Multiply this area by 3 (kg/cm2) and you will know what real force is being applied to the pouch. You can let me know the cylinder size (inner dia) if you have any confusion regarding the calculation, and I will be glad to help you with the multiplication factor.

i didn`t understand that please explain more what is BS ? what is GSM?
BS = Bursting Strength (Mullen Test) GSM = grams per square meter. (Grammage Or Basis Weight)
How we can test for different stacking levels like G+7
ASTM D 999 method is for single carton testing only.
How many Hz are you testing? Is Hz fixed?
This machine can do variable frequency from 1 - 5 Hz. (60-300 RPM). Normally product bounce is observed at about 210-240 RPM. Test to be continued at that speed.
@@PackTest Thank you for your answer. I have another questions 1. How many test time ? 2. Do you test only one face? (Ex.bottom)
@@bjo7523 Test Time also is user settable upto 999 mins. The longer the test duration, the more aggressive the test. In video we have shown a straight box. But you should test straight, sideways and inverted orientation also to consider the worst case scenarios of transportation.
Hey, This is great information. Can you please let me know which ASTM standard was used to perform the Dynamic Shear Test of Adhesive Tapes. Thank you
How is it a dynamic shear test? Looks more like a quasi-static test to me...
Hello Valentin. Thanks for the comment. A static shear test is where the tape is fixed on the test panel and a weight is hung under it. The load remains suspended until the tape decides to fall off. In this case we measure the time required for dis-lodgment. However in this video/machine, we are constantly increasing the force till the tape can not remain bonded to the test panel. Here the force required for dis-lodgment is being measured. Since the load is constantly increasing, its a Dynamic Force. Hence the name Dynamic Shear. I am not sure (and I could be wrong) Quasi-Static would be the right word here. Imagine saying Quasi-Static Shear Test of Adhesive Tapes. You may call it Quasi-Static if you wish to. 😀
The more I think of it, I feel saying "Quasi-Static" Shear Test does give it a hi-tech feel. We may consider using it as a marketing lingo. Please don't claim copyright if we do use it. 🤣. You have a Great Day, Valentin.
Very well explained, it is very helpful. Thanks a lot 👍👍
Thank you. Your appreciation is appreciated 😊

While we test our tissue paper then how much time do we need to keep on water
Tissue paper has a very high absorptivity. This test is for printing paper or for paper used for corrugated boxes and paper cores. Not suitable test for tissue.
Actually I want to know the size of paper while we cut it
Do you have ISO535 certificate for presented Tester?
ISO 535 is a Test method and not a certificate. Yes the COBB Test is as per ISO 535 as well as TAPPI T441
Thank you sir❤
Very useful
Is that double, triple or single layer cardboard
I think the sample was a 7 ply (Double Wall) Corrugated board. But the machine is common for all types.
Valuable, Which standard is it using?
ASTM D3330 and PSTC 101
Excuse me, i wanna ask is a cobb value directly proportional to moisture or inversely proportional to moisture? Thank you.
And the ash content too, thank you.
Hello Marcella. Moisture is the current moisture inside the paper/paper board. COBB is the "ability" to absorb "more" moisture. Hence they are very different.
@@PackTest how bout the ash content value? If the ash content value is high then the cobb value will be high too? Or will be low? Thank you
@@marcella3928 Yes, to the best of my understanding, Ash Content will affect COBB values for sure. While I donot have data to support it, my judgement says higher ash content should lead to a higher COBB value.
