It's hard to imagine this movie in its original context. By today's standards, some of the acting and effects would be almost comical, but as a kid in 1979 after having read the book, I was enthralled. The Barlow character, who draws almost entirely from Schreck's Nosferatu, was decades ahead of its time in terms of pure visual horror. These were all top drawer actors in their day, too. David Soul had starred in the enormously popular "Starsky and Hutch" tv show. James Mason was about as top drawer as you could get. I was a horror kid. I built the monster models that Mark had in his room. This movie hit me right where I lived! I never slept with the drapes open as a result of the floating Glick kid scene! The kitchen scene with Barlow was a real treat in '79... I was all of nine years old and saw it when it first aired, which added to its intended effect.

I love this 1979 version. It's still so scary to me. As other people have mentioned on here, I thought there is very little bonding between the kid and the older guy Ben. Well not till the very end. I was waiting for some kind of something happening (getting to know each other) very early into the movie but no.

This movie is M's best movie. Yea I'm gonna say it!! The problem with this movie wasn't actually the movie but rather how it was marketed. The preview made it appear to be something it was NOT. So movie-goers came in expecting 1 thing but got something else. My guess is if they marketed as a love story, it would have been a huge hit; appealing to those type of viewers and even appealing to those looking for a little suspense or thriller. Everything from soundtrack to cinematography to the acting to sound to costumes was so beautiful in this movie. For anyone to actually say this was the worst movie ever has absolutely no taste in movies and should not be allow to voice any opinions regarding movies!!!! There! I said it!!!

Kristen was the reason I watched this and then bought. but all three leads were good especially loved Kristen's southern accent. slow movie with a somber mood set to it. this is actually a remake from 1977 Japanese movie
