This dog needed a 6 month board and train to truly help this dog’s mindset but all the owners could afford was a 1 month training program. So we did the best we could to help give this dog a better future and prevent the owners from putting him down.

I can see how you may gather your opinion and theory from watching a training video. Without knowing and meeting this dog it’s hard for you to understand just how messed up this dog was prior to training. Apollo had been living with his owners since 8 weeks old. He’s lived at the same house and has been going outside in the same yard since they brought him home as puppy but Apollo would still go into a fight of flight state of mind every time he went outside. His biggest fears before training consisted of loud moving cars, any fast moving object (plastic bag, leaf, dog, person, car, ect..) Apollo also had a fear phobia of cardboard boxes. He was scared to death of them and would take off and hide anytime he saw one. Due to his anxiety and poor genetics has made it difficult to rechannel his was of thinking. We tried using multiple motivations when training but nothing seemed to help motivate Apollo. His anxiety was so extreme he couldn’t redirect his focus enough to enjoy high vocal and physical praise, we also tried a lot of different high value treats but he was still not interested. Apollos dealt with these fear and anxiety behaviors until finally his owners made the realization they could not train him on their own so they sought out help from a professional dog trainer. When Apollo come in for training he immediately became aggressive. He was very stressed being in a new environment around people he didn’t know. He showed some of the highest levels of fear and anxiety we as trainers have ever witnessed in a dog. Training has helped with teaching a clear level of communication and attention. Having this will help his owners build trust with Apollo by being able to redirect his focus and attention when Apollos in a uncomfortable situation. Training has also helped maintain behavior and control witch has started giving a better, more fulfilling life outside the home.

I get it, fearful dogs are difficult to train, but honestly this is hard to watch. That dog is so stressed, is in so much conflict, and he doesn’t improve at all. In fact it looks like the fear gets worse as the board and train progresses. Many of the corrections shown are unfair or counter productive for confidence building. I understand the main issue is the aggression and you were trying to get that to stop, but forcing obedience is not how you get long term success with a fearful dog. This isn’t the only video of yours that show a dog becoming more fearful/conflicted as training progresses either. I strongly suggest you read up on stress and appeasement signals in dogs and rewatch some of these videos. Taking a step back to learn and rework your training program to be more rewarding and less stressful for the dogs would be a great idea as well.
