Journey to Bethlehem - A Conviction of Fiction
PATREON MOVIE DISCUSSION:
This movie was selected by our Patreon Supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon (bit.ly/cdocpatreon) . Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard!
Shirleon & Melvin wish you a Merry Christmas while discussing a Family-friendly biblical musical, Journey to Bethlehem! The story is simple - a dramatization of the birth of King Jesus - but what about the music? And more importantly, how is it as a biblical adaptation? Tune in to find out!
Topics:
• (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) (tinyurl.com/34rjnpw5) 23-minutes discussing Shirleon & Melvin reflecting on the movies they’ve discussed through 2024, whether they have any new feelings about them, and the experience of improving one’s critical thinking. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) (tinyurl.com/34rjnpw5)
• Spoilers are truly irrelevant for discussing the adaption of the immaculate conception and birth of King Jesus, so Shirleon and Melvin kick things off strong talking about everything.
• Shirleon was moved by two songs: Mother To A Savior And King & In My Blood.
• Melvin felt it wasn't really his thing, and the whole of the project felt largely forgettable.
• Discussing how virtually every musical number could be removed because they weren't integrated into the plot or pacing of the film.
• Shirleon & Melvin disagree on some things, and the two go back and forth.
• Talking Lacrae as the angel Gabriel. Or, as Melvin calls it, "Lacrangel".
• Is the song Mary's Getting Married supposed to be a Feminist or Trad Wife anthem? It's messaging is unclear.
• No matter how minimal, Melvin never overcame a perpetual unease over the film's alterations of the biblical account.

    I was working in Japan in 2016, and by some miracle or random coincidence I saw a Japan Times article stating than an English-subtitled version of "Your Name" would be airing over the upcoming weekend at this little arthouse movie theater called Cinema Rosa in Ikebukuro. I got to see the film before 99.9% of the English-speaking otaku world, and not gonna lie, that felt pretty cool.

      !!! That is SUPER cool! Really glad you were able to experience that! The closes I have to this is when the Madoka Magica movie Rebellion came out and I was able to snag an early copy of their Collectors Bluray of the film which included an english subtitle track. I still have it, too! Just, you know, can't read any of the special edition doodads it came with lol

    Regarding the disparity in the timelines and why they never notice the three-year-gap, I think the relevant detail the both of you missed is that Taki and Mitsuha are experiencing their body-swaps as dreams. And details in dreams are always fuzzy after you wake up. You remember you had a dream, and probably remember some aspects of what happened, but the precise, mundane aspects get lost in the cold light of day.

    Knowing the Shinkai context (Shincontext?) is a big part of why Your Name's finale hits. I wouldn't characterize his penchant for separating his lovers as cruelty, however. There's a concept in Japanese called mono-no-aware that maintains that the impermanence of objects is the reason why they can evoke deep feelings. Shinkai's previous films are basically steeped in mono-no-aware from start to finish and the melancholy of 5 Centimeters per Second or Voices of a Distant Star were his stock in trade.

    If you put any reality TV show in there, then we are all in Tommy's head because we live in reality . . . I think.

      Literally true lol. Thanks to Munch, the Tommy Westphall canon starts to encroach on reality. And in multiple areas lol. The one I know of is Munch is in Arrested Development, and then S5 of Arrested Development Donald Trump is running for president. Which then connects our reality to Munch back down the line to Tommy Westphall lol

    also as Christians, do you think we need a film version of the Catholic Science Fiction novel Walter M. Miller Junior's 1959 Hugo-award winning novel "A Canticle For Leibowitz"?

    • @CineDoctrine
      @CineDoctrine 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Although I haven't heard of that piece of literature, I don't necessarily think that, specifically in terms of being a Christian, that I need any film or adaption. Although obviously I have a passion for film (as seen by, like, having a podcast about it), I clearly enjoy film a lot. But, I think of Paul speaking in 1 Corinthians 8:8 where-in he's discussing foods that may offend (i.e. meat sacrificed to idols). He outright writes, "Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do.". That is to say, food, which is of more important value to a person than movies, does not bring us closer to God if we are already in Christ. Thus, whether we eat or do not eat has no impact on our relationship with The Father. So, we can make decisions regarding the flexibility of our intake based on our evangelistic calling (the Great Commission). As such, I can comfortably say with movies (something far less valuable than food) is, again, something I do not need. I know that may not necessarily answer the purpose of your question, but I think it gives good insight into how I perceive the need or lack there of for adaptions and all materials. If it would be a good movie, then cool. I'll watch it. But, also, I don't need it. I'm indifferent.

    what do you guys think of the 1989 Quebecian Denys Arcand film "Jesus of Montreal", or the 1957 French Film precursor "He Who Must Die"? both films you can watch on TH-cam. They're both basically about groups of actors doing passion plays, whose lives begin to mirror the biblical characters they are portraying, showing the influence of Biblical scripture and Jesus upon people of today, as well as posing what if Jesus appeared in the then present day, 1921 in "He Who Must Die", and 1989/1990 in "Jesus of Montreal".

      @CineDoctrine 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've actually never heard of either of these films before, as I haven't really explored a lot of early(er) film. A lot of what I've watched is more modern film. Post 2010s material. I have watched a decent amount of pre-2000s but that's usually horror and a few dramas I've sought out. But these two films absolutely interest me based on your description!

    for a moment I thought this was a movie review of Predestination (2014), which is based off Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 short story "-All You Zombies-"
