Messy Suitcase celebrates a new kind of retirement, through travel and adventure!
Bob Greenawalt and Lisa Hamm-Greenawalt are reinventing retirement. We left work, packed up our truck with two bikes, a few suitcases, three musical instruments, and three cats, and set out to explore the planet. COVID reeled us in for 18 months, but now we split our year between the Vermont lakes region and the enchanted island of Puerto Rico, with lots of travel in between!

Lisbon: Boat Tour on the Tagus River
มุมมอง 6321 วันที่ผ่านมา
Lisbon’s lovely Tagus River beckoned, so of course Bob hopped on a boat! He was a little underwhelmed. It was a fine tour, nothing spectacular. Bob enjoyed a relaxing couple of hours seeing Lisbon's main monuments, such as the 25th of April Bridge, Praça do Comércio, and the Tower of Belém, among many others. The one-and-a-half-hour round-trip tour cost 26 euros, or about $28 US. You can also c...

A Mexican Mega-Resort Experience, Part 2: More Vidanta
มุมมอง 1202 หลายเดือนก่อน
When we bought a fractional ownership at Vidanta Resort in Mexico, we had no idea the world of luxury we would soon encounter. We’re a middle-class family, not accustomed to the perks of the super-rich that we find at Vidanta. If you’re like us, you’ll enjoy taking me take a three-part tour of this Mexican mega-resort, and spend a few minutes feeling like one of the rich and famous. In this Par...
Arriving in Lisbon
มุมมอง 1312 หลายเดือนก่อน
It’s Messy Suitcase’s first visit to Portugal, and Bob is traveling alone! He plans to spend a few days in Lisbon courtesy of a layover opportunity through TAP Air Portugal. Because his flight landed at 530 AM, Bob stowed his luggage in Lisbon through an app called Bounce so he could explore the city before he checked into his Airbnb. He discovered amazing tilework in the cobblestones, plazas, ...
A Mexican Mega-Resort Experience, Part 1: Arrival at Vidanta
มุมมอง 2892 หลายเดือนก่อน
When we bought a fractional ownership at Vidanta Resort, we had no idea about the world of luxury we would soon find ourselves wrapped in. Two ordinary, middle-class people who allowed ourselves to get sucked into the timeshare game, we are not accustomed to valets transporting our luggage to our room, or giant soaking bathtubs in our bathrooms, or massive fitness centers, or luxury spas, incre...
Charco El Pilón: River Hiking and Waterfall Swimming
มุมมอง 653 หลายเดือนก่อน
The remarkable hike to and from Charco El Pilón in Puerto Rico’s Maricao State Forest is a challenging rocky, muddy 2 ½-mile scramble along and often through the "El Chorote” branch that arrives at the El Pilón stream. The forest is lush and shady, and the terrain is hilly and challenging. The payoff is a spectacular waterfall and swimming hole. You’ll find the trailhead at the end of Route 362...
Ponce Art Museum: After the Earthquake
มุมมอง 734 หลายเดือนก่อน
Many have told us about the outstanding quality of the Ponce Art Museum (Museo de Arte), but two large earthquakes in January 2020 changed all that, when the main building was badly damaged and closed. They finally reopened a section this year, and we decided to check it out! After the earthquakes, the Museum displayed items at its gallery in San Juan, and took to the streets with workshops to ...
Stupid Drunk and Happy in Puerto Vallarta: Tasting Tequila at Oscar’s Destilería
มุมมอง 684 หลายเดือนก่อน
We stumbled upon a tequila micro-distillery right next to the Pacific Ocean, on the grounds of Restaurant Oscar’s, while we were just bopping around Puerto Vallarta. Blue agave plants and silver barrels beckoned us with the promise of a chance to try Jalisco’s specialty, tequila. This is how they describe it on their website: “Embark on a sensory adventure with our Mexican Distilled Spirits Tas...
Exploring Puerto Vallarta: Food, Booze, and Shopping on Mexico’s West Coast

From the bus ride in, to the airport out, we bop around Puerto Vallarta, a dynamic city on the west coast of Mexico. Highlights include enjoying lunch and beers at Los Muertos Brewery; wandering through Mundo de Cristal (House of Crystal), our favorite pottery/souvenir shop; shopping and more shopping, watching a cocinero make tacos de pastor, Bob eating ice cream made in a garafón (barrel), Li...
Vidanta Resort’s Heart of the House Tour
มุมมอง 2605 หลายเดือนก่อน
We donned dorky paper chef hats when Christan from the Joy Squad took us on a 90-minute tour behind the scenes of the massive Vidanta Resort in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. From housekeeping, to food service, to wine, to excruciatingly delicious gourmet chocolates, we had a chance to see how a large luxury resort is run. Vidanta has six resorts in Mexico, and Nuevo Vallarta, just north of Puerto Val...
Sneak Preview of VidantaWorld Park
มุมมอง 5225 หลายเดือนก่อน
Vidanta Nueva Vallarta is giving tours as it soft opens its long-promised "VidantaWorld Park" for a fee. Is it worth $100? Come along and see! Vidanta describes this theme park as “a space that defies all the rules of time, gravity, and even reality. A vacation taken to the limits of your imagination.” I don’t know if it’s all that, but we paid $100 for the opportunity to find out, which we cou...
Tasting Tacos and Tequilas in Puerto Vallarta

Dental Tourism in Mexico: A Great Excuse to Go on Vacation!
มุมมอง 665 หลายเดือนก่อน
Bob needed major dental work done, so we took a Mexican vacation! Getting crowns and eating tacos may not go together in your mind, but here’s the dirt: Dental work is way cheaper in Mexico than in the United States. The dentists are just as qualified, often US-educated, and it’s easy to find one that speaks English. We discovered this when we were living in Guanajuato, Mexico, in 2019 and the ...

I love staying at Luichy’s guesthouse
new subscriber here..my husband and I would like to do the same travel vlog. well done!
Nice Blog
Good work keep going on
Ahhhhhhh, such a beautiful area. God how I Love Puerto Rico 🇵🇷!
Leon leather market looks great. We're going there in a few weeks. The cow in the back of the truck is disgusting. I've seen that at a local taco place and a lot of people have gotten sick eating there. I don't know why a simple thing like handling meat properly is so hard here. They don't care what happens to people. We never eat a street vendor's they are the worst.
Was the big coaster cancelled?
Hello, What month/time of year did you take this ferry to and from Cántanos?
So the import tax was $65?? Arbitrios??
Welcome! Not many locals in Lisbon anymore..but it s stills ok
Is Leon a place to find an artisan for a pair of 'custom' boots for to be created?
Don’t skip the elevator, or walking up to the castle! And do t skip experiencing am Fadó! I love Portugal!
enjoyed viewing your "Arriving in Lisbon" adventure love the imge @4:16 very wonderful video ! Like 👌👌
How can we book his tour
How exciting that you got to experience a new section of the resort. The lazy river is truly mágica. Almost to tap a nap all the way around, lol. The water is my favorite. Hope your members' preview goes great, ours did!!
Hi Messy, Thank you for your video, it did clear up questions. how long did you drive with Vermont plates before getting it registered?
you guys live in the best town!! I am from Boquerón.
Beautiful Old San Juan
It sure is
Driving with Vermont plates in PR had to be pretty cool
Do you need a PR drivers license to register if US citizens
I think since PR is us territory then I don't think so but I might be wrong
Can you get the car inspected before going to CESCO?
They both appear to be M4A3E8 Sherman tanks, armed with 105 mm howitzers. M4 medium, A3 signifies they are welded, single front plate hulls with the Ford GAA V8 engine, and E8 signifies that they have wider late style tracks and HVSS suspension.
Can you get inspection after you get plates like in New York?
So, even if the vehicle doesn't have a license plate from Puerto Rico at the moment you pick it up, you can drive it off the lot? How long do they give you to get it to your house?
You can drive it home when you pick it up at the port. You have 30 days to change the license plate to PR.
Thank you for the video. I am shipping my car from Jacksonville to San Juan. Did they require a pressure wash of the engine and car?
No need
@MessySuitcase and where do we pay the taxes for the car? There at the port?? Can we drive the car from the lot to our house with the license plate from the US??? Or do we have to tow it ?
First of all, I love your video. I can't believe how they work real leather and not plastic or rubber. Man, what a dream town!
Everything is awesome
Im guessing this is a fish no zone right?
Right. You can't get near the water.
Lovely!
Amazing content but due to lack of SEO optimization your views is too low....
Like 1 AND NEW Subscriber 👍
When is the big coaster opening?
Who knows? Everything is slow at Vidanta.
They used this beach to train for the us army
Great video both of you. I stayed their in March with my family. We stayed at the Kingdom of the Sun. During our stay the park was open Tuesday-Thursday from 5pm-10pm. Simple beautiful indeed! The ferris wheel was open and we rode the flower drop. Was exciting indeed. Febuary was the soft opening of a section of the park. All restaurants and shops where open. I believe it depends on your contract what you get charged as an entrace fee. Everyone deserves to experience Luxury at Vidanta.
Your video content is very good but due to proper optimization your videos are not getting views...
I quite enjoyed PV. The Hotel Rio Malecon is a little gem and very reasonable. This is very informative. I'm now living in Tucson and medical tourism is definitely happening in the Borderlands.
What Hotel did You stay at?
It was an Airbnb at the southern end of the hotel zone.
Thanks for your wonderful video of my Island. Blessings!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Phong cảnh rất đẹp Cảm ơn bạn đã chia sẽ video rất tuyệt vời ❤chúc bạn một ngày mới thật nhiều sức khỏe ❤❤❤
can you go on a payment plan for the import taxes?
I just visited and surprisingly, I didn't see anyone on bikes on the golf cart paths. Especially with electric bikes, you would have thought they would have been replaced the carts for many people.
How long of a walk from the entrance where u left your car til u reach the tower.
Less than a mile
Humacao, my mom's hometown
Why any sane person in the continental US would want to send a car to the island??? There are 2.2 million cars running in the island every day and there is a brutal inventory of cars in the dealers. Please do your research before moving. Rather sell your car in the States.. I just bought a 2022 Kia Sportage with 34k miles on it for $20k. It is a buyers market in PR. Forget about sending cars to PR!!
We already had a car that we loved. We did our research but the taxes turned out to be higher than reported or anticipated.
Looks wonderful. Did you stay in La Parguera? If so do you mind sharing where?
We did not. We drove there from Cabo Rojo.
@@MessySuitcase ok. Thank you
how do I book please? thanks
Sorry your experience was not great. It depends on when you visit, and if Palmas is in a growth period or not. It’s gotten better and definitely in a growth period currently. You’ll regret not purchasing when you had the opportunity in 2022.
Fantastic upload my friend, place is simply amazing! Absolutely amazing!
Those are so cool! Great guy too.
You sound jealous the entire time… and cute necklace
