All things Alligator and common snapping turtles
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 21 ต.ค. 2016
I have been a snapping turtle hobbyist for over 35 years. Up until June 2023, it has been only commons but now we have added two Alligator snapping turtles to the mix and this page will be dedicated to all things Alligator and common snapping turtles.

Where did you get the alligator snapping turtles from

The pond is looking good!
@@crunchinfo Thanks Rusty. It’s starting to mature a bit with a growth of alge along the sides. The fish in there eat that as well as the snails. It’s becoming a little ecosystem
hi bro!, I need some help with my turtle, if you can help I will give you a shout out
@@sire_sirol What’s wrong with your turtle?
Not with my turtle with my situation @@Alligator.commonsnappers
@@Alligator.commonsnappers where can I talk? To you privately
Thanks for sharing. Would be so kind to tell us what filter you are using, and where to get one? Also, your pump information please.
@@markdecker2724 I answered these for you in the other video you posted your questions on. But the filter name is in the description of this video and the waterfall pump is the pond boss 2,300gph pond pump.
Great information. Would have enjoyed more about your pumps, and UV system.
@@markdecker2724 Thanks. The aqua garden in pond 600 5 in 1 is the pump for the fountain and that’s also the filter and has the uv sterilizer built all into it. Super easy. The pump dedicated to the waterfall is a pond boss 2,300gph pump. It is almost too powerful for my set up. I’d say 1,600 gph would be ideal. But I found it for a great deal and is working well.
😎👍🐢
@@TheJoker1200 it’s an easy filter to service.
@@Alligator.commonsnappers Nice and Convenient.
@@TheJoker1200 oh very. Plus it has the uv sterilizer and fountain

@@TheJoker1200 Thanks! They get some days in there but have to share it with the other turtles. Not at the same time of course.
@@Alligator.commonsnappers True true, a lot of people don't know that you can't have Common or Alligator Snappers in the same aquarium with other species.

@@TheJoker1200 thanks!
Nice, if it ever leaks you would have to reseal the whole tank because new silicone will not adhere properly to old silicone.
@@TheJoker1200 I hope that doesn’t happen
@@Alligator.commonsnappers Knock on wood. I resealed 4 of my tanks cause they were about 10 years old and 2 of them were out in the sun without water. If you need to reseal them you can use ASI Black Aquarium Sealant. I found out about it from SerpaDesign's TH-cam channel, he makes really cool Aquascapes.
😎👍

How do i set this up? What do i need?
I am new to your channel, are these a boy & girl?
They are so young still. It will take years to typically be able to tell. But glad you found the channel
why is there such a size difference?
@@fishmonger6879 It absolutely could be a male and female that’s what I feel but too young to tell. The bigger one has a bigger appetite no surprise.
Nice, gonna add fish?
Thank you. Well there will be a snapping turtle in here so we will be adding some game fish. A few bigger ones so they stick around
Jus a suggestion it wouldn't be a bad idea to secure and hide the plug wires from the pump jus Incase the turtle or turtles don't mistake the wire for a worm or something and try to bite into it then everything alive in there will more than likely be shocked and killed
@@timothyhamilton2753 yes I plan to put wire insulation over them. Thanks for the suggestion
@@timothyhamilton2753 I plan to add wire looms over the cords. Thanks for the suggestion
Tanks looking great! FYI, I've been told by many fish keepers that a stable PH that might be a little high/low for what you're keeping is better than trying to adjust the PH and have it constantly swinging back and forth. Another great nitrate sponge is Frog Bit, look it up. It's very hardy floating lily pad type plant that will spread like crazy if you have a low flow/current like a turtle tank.
Thank you! Yes I’ve always read that as well. As for frogbit, I’ve been meaning to get more I had some and they ate it.
FYI: The amount moss will lower your pH depends on the kH of your starting water. If you have a high kH pH won't fall much, if at all. The people who report large drops in pH have low kH. Different water produces different results. It's a huge pain.
Putting live plants in has helped more than the moss did
@@Alligator.commonsnappers Good idea, I'll try that. At the moment I do a 50/50 RO/tap water mix to get my kH down and then use moss to actually lower the pH. Plants would use kH as fertilizer so maybe then I wouldn't have to bother with RO. May I ask what kind of plants you used?
@@genericuser4266 Pothos. They love nitrates and turtle tanks have plenty to give.
@@Alligator.commonsnappers Thanks, I'll get some planted. I really appreciate it.
Just subbed
Thank you! Lots of turtle videos!
I wish they didn’t get so darn huge because they’re so stinkin’ cute ❤
When they outgrow this tank I may do a larger 180 gallon but because that tank is so heavy, we will probably go to a large stock tank
Love it...I have always loved snappers....great habitate....they do enjoy muck..but this is great....thanks for sharing....and Subscribed.....
Thank you. Yeah they love to dig down in the soft pool filter sand.
beautiful tank!

Oh lawd a snapping turla! Cool video, what is your job title?
Probably herpetologist
They're getting big! Question for you, when you bought Koopa and Yoshi from Loggerhead Acres, did you talk to anyone first or did you just put in an order? I've emailed them twice over the last 3 weeks and got no reply.......?
They are busy guys there. I eventually did talk to John. He’s a nice guy and answered the questions I did have mainly about the shipping process. I had never ordered live animals online so I was a hair apprehensive about it. It went well though. Plenty of people probably just order though and never speak to anyone.
Thanks! I'm in the same boat, never shipped anything alive before, want to make sure all goes well.
@@ZombifiedWatermelon Do the fedex overnight to the hub. That’s what John recommended to me. I was at the door of the local fedex hub when they opened and they had Koopa and Yoshi ready to go. They wondered what was in the box and I said turtles and they said oh wow.
I also had trouble getting in contact, but if you call John's phone number provided on the website, he gets ahold of you pretty fast.
No cares in the world right there!
Very well said.
Im not from North America nor do i know anything about snapping turtles and turtles in general, but wouldnt they need more room to move or are they very stationary?? Genuinely very curious
Hi, these tanks are appropriately sized for how small these turtles are. The bigger one is in a big aquarium 6x2x2 feet. The other two tanks are pretty big too at 4 feet long by 18 deep. Alligator snapping turtles don’t move around much either.
Very beutiful set ups! Nice work.

I have a 40+ pound Florida snapping turtle. He started as a hatchling. Mine doug the seal out of his second aquarium. I had a custom tank built for him. It has an extra layer of glass along the seams to prevent him from removing the seals.
Holy cow. That’s now going to be on my mind! How big was he when that happened? Mine so far has not been a big digger. Any videos of him?
That thing is gonna be huge!!!! Cant wait till it’s finished!!!!!!
It’s done. See my last video posted. Now just waiting to set up the aquarium on it
From what I’m watching you need to use fresh green moss. I’ve tried to box door, dried stuff, and the best I can get is a .2 to a .4 difference
Yeah I tried a more fresh green peat moss and it made no difference. I still have it so I may add some to a bag and put in the canister filter and see
Amaizing, should do it more with my horssfield tortoise
Yeah it adds a bit more to the hobby for me.
Very healthy looking turtles! I'm planning/constructing a 60 breeder setup for a baby Alligator Snapper (will be purchasing from Loggerhead Acres as you did) and your vids have been a big help! Question: Do Koopa or Yoshi ever actually leave the water and bask? There seems to be two schools of thought on basking spots for Alligator Snappers, one says provide them with a traditional basking spot, the other says simply provide them with UVA/UVB and they'll float to the surface and bask in the water. Curious what behavior you've witnessed.
Thank you. They did come out in the beginning on rare occasion. Now they never do. But I do have two big fake wood root style logs and both of those logs come out of the water. I provide the uvb lighting and full spectrum light and they do both come way up on the log and hidden by the greenery and keep their heads out of the water on occasion.
Ah, you ain’t seen nothing yet-but I’m sure you know that! 😅
Oh absolutely. Tiny compared to an adult but sure is growing steadily. Far outpacing his/her brother/sister.
Sounds like heaven, but not sure about carpet with tanks that big. Spillage seems inevitable 😮
Was going to be LVP but being a basement, carpet will be so much softer on the concrete and warmer not to mention deaden the echoes. Also it’s going to be a home theater room and carpet is best for sound quality. I’m very careful not to spill. Usually a few drops here and there but I’ll be using a hose directly from tank to sink so it should work well
Just so you know, minnows are highly toxic for alligator snapping turtles. Instead, feed them mollies and guppies,
Are there any studies that you can link me showing that information? I’ve been feeding minnows to turtles for over 35 years with no issues
Hey, whatever works right??😅
Absolutely
So stealth 🫣
Lots of similar little videos on my channel some are more stealth
