Music, TV, tech, books - and more! Song, book and TV reviews.
For over 35 years I have been listening to, and researching, UK and American rock and pop bands, building up an extensive and (hopefully) eclectic music collection in the process.
A bassist and guitarist. In the 90s I was an amateur musician and songwriter of faith-based songs, producing music in my home studio.
Thesedays, I prefer to analyse song meanings, do TV and book reviews, and research lots of other topics: some trivial, some literally matters of life and death!

Disaster in the Antarctic! Tragedy as Air New Zealand Flight 901 Crashes into Mount Erebus
Air New Zealand had been flying sightseers to the Antarctic since 1977 in their fleet of DC-10s, despite the obvious dangers. On 28th November 1979 it finally all went tragically wrong as Flight 901 flew into the lower slopes of the volcano Mount Erebus at 1500ft.
Why was the captain so low and so lost, despite flying in clear air? In this video I use my decades of aviation knowledge to examine the competing theories and official investigations. To my mind, the clues are in the final minutes of the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) - as I explain here (14:22).
Please appreciate that I try to keep this channel clean. I am not using other people’s images (unless CC licenced) or video clips and therefore I have to rely on my expertise and explanations. I hope you find them interesting.

You might have to buy a DVD, either of Series 4, or the entire box set. I don't think it has been on UK television for a long time, but I am not sure. Thanks for your comments, appreciated.
lovely analysis
Thanks for spoiling my enjoyment of a great series by an amateur and irrelevant podcast
Everyone's entitled to their opinions!
This show was interesting from a pastoral perspective. There were occasions of very difficult decisions for Peter and Father Mac, including things said to them in the confessional.
One of my favs. Cool video as well.
Why would Fr.Ryan want to free his country from England. Odd . You seem to have the same mindset as Mountbatten. Ah the Irish, fierce when provoked.
Thanks for watching and commenting!

Sincere apologies to the late ROY Kinnear, not Ray!
Des and Arnie the mechanics, Debbie, Justin, Maurice Michaelson, Scotch Harry, Rose Mellors and Andrew the accountant.....can you think of any others beyond this handful of semi-regular characters in the show?
Brian Jones was a lost leader
Excellent point! I intend to do a video on Lost Leaders and I may well include Brian Jones and The Stones. Thanks for watching.

The excellent Adge: King of the Wurzels by John Hudson. The opening chapter about his final day is very poignant. amzn.eu/d/9gkoHSS

@@jonathanconibere2455 Thanks, Jonathan, for watching and commenting. The video was just a little tribute, but I wanted to mark the anniversary. Yes, the biography opened my eyes to a huge amount of Adge and Wurzels history. He was a fantastic ambassador for the West Country.
@@greatwestern101 Nice tribute - bio was quite fascinating. I was surprised how much I learnt whilst assisting the author. Adge was so clever - and a wonderful wordsmith. His personal notebooks are full of such prose that does the west country proud!

I skipped through the book..agree with yr analysis of it. Wasnt impressed by it. Lot of unanswered questions. Thanks 4this
Thank you!
Fact check! Apologies, Billy actually says he 'cannot stand the man' in relation to being questioned by Scott-Palliser about Jack Ford almost being family. 'That's exactly my point' replies S-P. My comment in the video stands as an accurate, but mis-remembered, paraphrase.
Most underrated band ever.
Thanks for your comment! The Kinks are not given enough credit for their ability to create brilliant material over a 30-year career. All the focus is on the 60s, and songs like Do It Again are passed over.
Not underrated by People that know and understand Great Music.
@@wayneelliott7011 I really appreciate you watching, and I hope you enjoyed the video. Take care.
My apologies to CANON Penfold, not Father Penfold, a Church of England minister who talks Jack out of a possible suicide attempt by befriending him in a Liverpool hotel, and sets him up with a bed and work at the Square Deal hostel.
If I had to chose another key character, I still wouldn't choose any other members of the Seaton family, but would instead include Sarah Headley, Matt's widow. In a fine performance by Rosalind Bailey, we see a female mirror image of Jack Ford: sharp, intelligent, 'nosey' and eager to get on. She is more serious than Jack, and more concerned about the legality and appearances of what she does, but still a fearsome opponent - or a priceless ally. In the end though, I think Billy Seaton is the fifth key character because of his continual opposition to Jack's worldview, creating drama that lasts right up until the end of the show.

Apologies for the sound sync problem in this video - new software glitches! Hope it doesn't spoil your enjoyment.
A really interesting review of a really interesting year. Sounds like a really interesting book too!
A fair few AAA superstars in the book! What is interesting, though, is that Hepworth tends to go wider than my own taste (e.g. Carole King) but he still makes these artists absolutely fascinating.
Correction: I should say that David Hepworth was the co-founding editor of Q magazine with Mark Ellen.
I am speaking through cotton wool on this one - but the show must go on! 😎
I just want to say 'THANK YOU' to everyone who has viewed this video. By my standards, it is a lot! I am really grateful, and I hope you will keep watching Great Western! There will be more classic rock and pop from the 60s to the 90s, along with classic TV reviews. Please consider Liking and Subscribing - thank you.
Enjoyed that, thank you. I also came up in the early 80’s, and I THINK I first became aware of the Kinks from this song and video, but there was always the vague idea that they had already existed long ago, in a galaxy far far away. They also used to daringly sing Lola in the schoolyard during gym class, but I’m not sure I realized it was the same group. Probably heard You Really Got Me later. It’s weird experiencing things out of order.
Great memories, thank you. I didn't hear this song at the time, but heard it around '97. The Kinks were always 'there' somewhere. The 1980s were particularly full of 60s nostalgia...not that The Kinks were ready for the nostalgia circuit at this point! Come Dancing I do remember as I think it was much bigger in the UK than Do It Again.
Nice interpretation
Very kind of you, thanks so much. I appreciate you watching!
Hello. Another insightful elevating review. Keep up the great work, & thanks again. Cheers.
Appreciate your insights...I have the book, "Kink" (autographed by Dave!) Is "Thin Line" a "revision of "Kink" or a completely new autobiography?
Thanks so much! My understanding from a friend of mine who has Kink, is that it is an updated version BUT has some material removed, particularly anything to do with Dave's spirituality. It is probably worth buying if you want to read about the last 20 years and his stroke etc.
@@greatwestern101 Wondered why a 2nd autobiography was published relatively close in time to the first (Kink)?? I enjoyed "Kink" but have not read "Thin Line"
@@joedefilippo8908 I thought it was about 15-20 years? Thin Line 2022 and Kink '97. I believe?
Thankyou for your fascinating insight into what sounds like a fascinating book on a very fascinating period. I must get hold of a copy!
Thank you for this tremendous review. By way of sharing insight, my perspective, like Dave's, has been shaped by mystical experience. Though my & Dave's experiences were different, our sensibilities about what we've learned resonate, such that when we met outside a small club in Philadelphia, Pa our encounter glowed, & we felt enveloped in a sincere unity of understanding, & a seemingly cosmic pleasure of recognition, & instant spiritual friendship of souls. Just two men outside a club, but I've never experienced anything remotely like it, & I've met many great talents & "stars". I really appreciate Dave, his musical contributions, & his clear caring for the readers of his books. Bravo Dave. Godspeed. And thank you, Paul, for your insightful sharing, & contribution to people's musical & human appreciation. Best to you.
@yashagoldentyer7840 Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate it, it's difficult getting a channel started, especially with material that takes 10-20 mins to watch and (perhaps) requires a bit of thinking about. You are not the only person to be very positive about Dave Davies, the man, and he is to be commended for his down-to-earth approach, and his kindness to other people. He doesn't seem at all showy or pretentious. (Not met him myself, as I tend to avoid famous people....they say its usually disappointing! 😎) I am in no way anti-spiritual and there are many things unseen and currently unknowable, but I follow the One who said 'I am the Way, the Truth and the Life' ! Again, many thanks. Your penultimate sentence is really, really appreciated. Please feel free to come back here as there will more bands, more artists, TV, and more books!
Hello again. I appreciate your thoughtful response. You have a great writing style. I will listen happily to more of your insightful reviews. I wanted to recommend to you Ray Davies' book Americana: The Kinks, the road & the perfect riff (2013). It's a great read, & I have a better understanding of Ray's point of view. As far as "mysticism" goes, what I mean is the direct perception of the infinite ineffable "divine" unity of all life. It is a life changing, & seemingly rare experience for people. I've always wondered why everybody doesn't have this experience, lived & written about by deep mystics of every faith tradition. I suspect that it may have to do with brain chemistry, for one thing. And probably life challenges. As George Harrison wrote "...life flows on within you & without you.", & "It's all too much for me to see A Love that's shining all around here." So, what I'm left with is my earnest desire to love & respect everyone, & to cherish every monent. After all, "miracles" are ever present, and there is always so much to be grateful for, even in this crazy world. I wish you & yours a great year filled with joy, great health & good fortune. As I am writing these words, I hear Dave singing, in "You don't know my name" "...I just smiled and said that I'm so glad to be alive." Cheers.
@@yashagoldentyer7840 Thank you, I will look out for that book.
Well done Paul, terrific overview of one of my favourite music books. You really captured Dave's spirit here.
That is very kind of you, Alan. Dave is such an interesting character and I struggled to do him justice, but I appreciate your comment!
Did you enjoy Living on a Thin Line? Do you agree with my theory about the title? Whatever your thoughts, please Like and Comment. I would also value your subscription too!
I am indebted to my good friend (and massive Kinks fan!) Alan for the following insights: The character I rather unkindly called a 'spiv' in this video is, of course, one of three appearances of this character, from Come Dancing and Don't Forget to Dance from State of Confusion, all the way to Do It Again. It is probably Ray's impersonation of his beloved Uncle Arthur as he would have appeared in the 1940s. Married to Ray's sister Rosie, Arthur was a man who was ground down by the system. Perhaps Busker Ray's terror comes from not wanting to end up a like Arthur? Do check out Alan's channel and his blog for many more fascinating insights into the Golden Age of rock! Regarding the Heart of Soul CD single and the acoustic versions......going unplugged was very on point in the early 1990s with Clapton, McCartney, Nirvana, REM(?) etc, all doing acoustic TV performances on MTV's Unplugged.
I had high hopes that Olivia would be developed, but they've let her do nothing in recent episodes. She's looking like a spare part, sadly. Good actress, though.

Sounds interesting! I love those 'human' moments in rock autobiographies that biographers wouldn't know about that make musicians seem more 'normal'. Though a relative measure for AC/DC I would think! Maybe Brian can't remember anything about 1981-2017 😂 Fascinating as always!
Thank you, I came away with a lot of respect for the many, many, hard hours Brian put in to making ends meet and chasing his dream for fame! As Mick Jagger said recently, you can’t cancel a gig because your leg hurts!
Great review, sounds an interesting book!
Thank you. I thought about reading his book about making Tusk, but having hardly ever heard that album, I decided against....

Glad to have Lillith back, she was my favourite character on Cheers. Nicholas Lyndhurst is excellent in 'Goodnight Sweetheart' so quite a coup getting him too. Sounds promising!
She should be appearing any week now, and his producer at the radio station, Roz, is also going to make an appearance. Hopefully in different episodes - the show needs everything it can get at the moment! :) Also, there have been far more Cheers references than we were led to believe beforehand, so there is a wealth of characters and situations there!
