For the past few years, the known band here in the Philippines, “Eraserheads,” has hidden meanings behind their songs. These meanings weren’t just any ordinary meanings, but meanings to bring justice to innocent people. While watching and listening to their music video called “Spolarium,” I was a bit confused on what was happening. This music video was needed to be watched with a deeper thinking. If you watch it by just looking at it, you won’t get the idea that they want to show the people. Last 1982, there was a fifteen year old girl who has been raped. Her name was ‘Pepsi Paloma.’ This song was basically about what happened to her. She claimed that she was sexually abused by three known celebrities and influential personalities here in the Philippines. If you read the lyrics carefully, you will have the chills by imagining that she was the one talking. She was allegedly made to drink too much alcohol until she became unconscious, then she was raped. Pepsi Paloma even reported to the Philippine Defense Minister and claimed that she was raped by the three known celebrities. She died when she was about to call out for justice. There were many rumors that ‘Pepsi Paloma’ didn’t commit suicide, and someone might have killed her before showing up to the court for proof. Until now, her case has no closure yet and she didn’t receive justice as well. Even though the popular show hosts are guilty, there is still no proof since they have many connections with politicians who fixed the case with strong political influence to the people. This music video is an example of completing the “Key Concepts of Media Literacy.” These are the following key concepts: 1)Media messages are constructed, which means that it is made by someone. This music is definitely made by someone to show the people what is on their mind and to express it in a way that the audience will feel what they feel. 2)Media construct reality. This music has shown the reality of an innocent girl who needs justice, yet it isn’t noticed by many until now. This is all about the story of what really happened to her that many people doesn’t know. 3)Media messages are produced for particular purposes. This music has its own purpose of giving justice to this young girl who has been abused. 4)People construct their own meanings from media messages. This music has its own hidden meaning to not directly affect people who were in this crime. Music is there way to give true information about reality. 5)Form and content are closely related in media messages. The content of this music has its own form/way of bringing messages to people. This may also affect the audience who watched this music video.
