I personally think the whole cultural imagery of the Vikings with horned helmets fallacy might have had its roots in an actual time when sea raiders from “barbarian lands” actually wore these horned helmets such as Sherden/Nuraghe Warriors. Most of our Viking imagery in the English speaking world comes from the Franks and the Anglo-Saxons. These people (Franks and Angles, Saxons, etc) did not live within the Roman world, but on its periphery, between the cusp of oral history and written history, and any memory of mythical sea raiders with horned helmets probably got passed down within the cultural folklore. Much like the idea of Vikings wearing horned helmets continued to do so until really the age of the internet made it one of the classic internet “ehem, ahctually….” Topics popular with people interested in history.

Based on the way the Ramesses dynasty ended (look at how quickly the Egyptians go through Pharaohs after Ramesses the 3rd), politically, Egypt did not. Well we have some idea of where they came from. Sardinia, Sicily, Greece. They weren't a unified culture. More so a confederation of convenience that likely would have added to its # from the country folk after sacking the local city. Or perhaps the locals had rebelled against their local nobility and sought out the Sea People or the "Sea People" weren't even one people and was instead several waves of mass migrants fleeing natural disasters

@@wingedhussar1453 We have lots of remants of civlizations from that era, the big problem is that egyptians never accurately identified them and so we don't know exactly wich civilization they came from. We can only guess by those who existed in that same era and had enough technology and expertise to build ships and weapons capable to rival the egyptians.

Not exactly. The Philistines were Greeks who were part of the Sea People. After being defeated by the Egyptians, the Pharoah saw their usefulness as warriors so gave them the Gaza Strip to act as a buffer for any future invasions of Egypt from the Levant. They were illiterate so ya, they didn't leave a record behind.

@@isaacgriffin5690 Yeah they were very likely Greeks and other Aegean people like the Lycians who resorted to piracy when their economies and societal structures collapsed. It makes sense since they were already a sea faring people who raided, pillaged and fought as mercenaries around the Mediterranean. "The Sea Peoples" may have even sacked Troy.

@thecobaltemperor Actually that is not entirely correct. The sea peoples did damage for sure. But by that point the empires they attacked were suffering from droughts and famine. Multiple factors were at play.

Though there were old speculation that many had iron weapons… Either that or early forms of Iron weapons (maybe low tin bronze or copper) were adopted in response to bronze shortages.

They were most likely a mix of Sardinians, Macedonians, and many other people along the Mediterranean. Think of them less as one ethnic group, but a confederation of several, similarly to the European Huns that wouldve come much later
