our woven veins converge (2023) for saxophone ensemble - Robert McClure
Fredonia Saxophone Ensemble
Wildy Zumwalt, director
Rosch Recital Hall, SUNY-Fredonia
2024.11.14
Program note:
our woven veins converge for eleven saxophones was commissioned by Wildy Zumwalt for the Fredonia Saxophone Ensemble at SUNY Fredonia. As I began working on musical ideas for the piece, one gesture in particular reminded me of a recent nature documentary on fungus releasing spores. I dove into researching fungus with Merlin Sheldrake’s book, Entangled Life. These fascinating organisms are largely responsible for nearly all terrestrial life and are completely entwined with our existence. our woven veins converge was inspired by the lifecycle of fungus, the mycelial network that is essentially an underground interstate system for many different plants and organisms, and the reproductive strategies of mushrooms releasing spore. Musical material is presented in varying methods and in different contexts representing the diverse range of shapes, forms, colors, and structures that a single species of fungus can express. After learning about these incredible organisms, I developed a greater appreciation of the partnerships, struggles, and drama that is playing out beneath our feet every day.

real good balance between the instruments and the electronics. And the timbres work well together. seamless texture.

Would probably make someone more sleepy. Felt like the piece was trying to reflect nature because it simply had no structure.
