LATE SEASON Pheasants in SOUTH DAKOTA!! ONE LAST BIRD
Have you got a grunt tube? Anymore when i'm tracking and i've got a strong feeling i'm real close, before i push on and risk jumping the buck (which i've done plenty) i sit down instead where i have a good vantage, blow four or five grunts - that's it - and just wait ten or fifteen minutes. I've brought in my last three out of four bucks i was on this way in scenarios where i might well have jumped them and only heard the brush cracking. Sometimes it takes them a full ten or fifteen minutes to come creeping in. My reasoning is it's not likely to scare him away even if it doesn't bring him in, and there's a good chance you'll bring him in. I think a lot of these scenarios where you see guys jumping the buck two, three times they may have got him sooner (or at all) if they made more use of the tube.
I have had several people mentioning this to me, I bring it along but I am always nervous to use it because I don’t what to announce my presence and lose the element of surprise. But lots of guys have been telling me I need to try some calling!
@@swostillwateroutdoors it's really hard to close the last hundred yards or whatever in thick cover, as we all know of course. You may not need to. Get out the call. I've blown hunts knowing the buck i was tracking was very close and choosing to press on only to hear him crash away in the thick stuff, and then the whole cycle has to begin again. Now i get out the call in such scenarios. Just a few good shortish honks and lay off and wait, don't do it again. If he's close and gonna come that will do the trick. I usually sit. When they come in, and quite often they do, they have typically not pinpointed you, they are looking around for the other buck. They know they are close but they are not looking right at you. They know you're around but they think you're another deer, so that's good too. Here's my tale of this year's hunt in case you are interested, cheers, i enjoy your segments! - theatavist.substack.com/p/the-hunt-my-2024-big-woods-buck
O my god first time watching. This was awesome
Thanks!!! I def enjoy this type of hunting!!!
Hunting used to be a more humble, respectful, non-showman sport. It was about pursuing and harvesting a buck. We didn’t use terms like “Stud,” “slammer,” or make it into some Uber macho high-five obsession. There’s always a mix of excitement and sadness when I shoot a deer. Im proud of my accomplishment but I don’t jump up and down with glee like a 7-year old. And if I had only 1-2 hours left I’d be walking quietly as fast as possible instead of talking so much to my camera person.
I def mean no disrespect to the deer! If you can’t tell, I am a very excitable person Hahahhaha!!
When i still hunt its 3 to 5 slow steps, then stop look all arount with eyes, and binoculars. Move look, move look. I've still hunted to within 30 yards of a big buck before I saw it. Slow, and eyes, and binoculars name of the game.
The tricky part with tracking is you don’t know how far ahead the buck is, if you never catch up to him you never have a chance to kill him! Once getting close, your method is the best way to go!!
Idk if mines a newer model or not, but the hand hole actually goes in the two small ports for the rope at the bottom of the rangefinder.
Yours must be a newer model!! I wish I had that!
Great job! That is so hard to get that close.
Thanks!!! It really is a tough way to hunt, lots of things have to come together!!
Dude, your a LEGEND IN YOUR OWN MIND.
You know it!!! ;)
I can’t find the plans

Waist of time 🖕
Woah! What did you use to get that birds eye view? Never seen that angle before! Cool hunt!
I designed a filming rig :)
This was a great watch coming from Minnesota! I’ll be up in northern MN for thanksgiving grouse hunting. Tracking seems very tough but very exciting at the same time. Cool video man hope you get one!
Great grouse hunting in northern MN!!
With so many hunteres in WI. I bet you chase more bucks into other hunters then you end you getting? That would be disappointing to track all day then hear a shot ahead.
there are areas in northern wi where we have less chance of pushing deer into another hunter big traces of nat forest too
muzzeloader season way less traffic in woods
Fortunately so far that has not happened to me! In my experience, these bucks know exactly where the humans are at, and they tend to avoid those spots in daylight!
Agreed!! There’s so much woods out there!!
Interesting camera. You look like you are on top of a hill most of the time. Nice to see a Minnesota tracker, I need to try that more.
Yeah I have a filming rig I designed for filming 3rd person view!
How are you filming this?
360 camera with a filming rig I designed!
Great video! You can't beat a spike buck for tenderness. How did you film that hunt?
I designed a filming rig for my 360 camera!
Great video as always. Sucks when you make a decision you cant take back. I made a decision this past week on the only snow I may see for the season. Now I home from camp thinking why did I not do that differently. Anyway keep at it man.
Dude I have so many shoulder of could ofs that haunt me at night trying to sleep 😂😂😂😂
Great Job on this. You really captured the feeling of being there.
Thanks so much!!! It was a great memory!!!
That's one of my favorite areas to hunt but I don't do a lot of tracking. Mostly stand hunting. Glad it worked out for you. Nice video Jason
Heck yeah!!! Is this Todd’s buddy Jason?!
@swostillwateroutdoors no, I was talking to you, Nathan, I mis stated your name. I was just talking with a guy Jason from Missouri before I replied. Sorry. No, this is Jigglestick (Dave) 👍🏼
No worries!!! Oh cool!!
Crazy to see bear tracks during muzzle loader season. 2023 was a weird year.
Honestly, it was just bizarre… the Bears were moving like crazy last year in December!
All those birds you missed. It's because you are shooting behind them. Shoot where the bird is going, not where the bird has been. Get your lead right, and you'll harvest more game. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!! It is def a good skill to develop leading on the target!!
How far in front do you shoot where the bird is going? Give some tips of aimpoint at what yardage.
It is a very different style of deer hunting than what I see here in Pennsylvania. Too much posted groung here and rarely snow during season.Looks Exciting! Great video!
Yeah, you definitely have to have some big chunks of public to be able to make this work!!
How do you sneak up on a buck making that much noise?
One thing I will say is that the microphone makes it sound louder than it is in person, the other part is that deer here things walking in the woods all the time and often wait to see what it is before they run!
2024 rifle season opens tomorrow. Good luck, hunters. And take a kid hunting. It may not change the world, but it could change that kids world.
Love this comment!!!!
Much more interesting watching a successful hunt. We all can film unsuccessful hunts.
I agree!! It is not easy killing the bucks this way...but I do have some kills on the channel tracking if you are ever interested in watching more!
Congratulations fellow hunter's 👍🇺🇸🦌🇺🇸🤙 The Vermonter
Thanks man!!!!!!!!! Hope you are having a good season!!
Sitting here in the UP november 19th hoping for snow to try some tracking ive been watching videos for weeks trying to take in all i can. I love this video, very well put together. If your a bow hunter and wanna see some cool archery videos type in sbs outdoors praire dog archery addition. Ive got 3 videos and pitting together a 4th i think youll like them. Good luck this season and keep the videos coming.
Heck yeah man...this weather this fall has been depressing for a tracker!!!
What 7600 caliber is that?
It is a 30-06!!
There wasn’t any snow in Minnesota 3 weeks ago.?
Yeah, this is from last year!!
Great job! That’s a smart buck.
Yup!! He is using the lay of the land to his advantage for sure!!!
Stay on that buck bro
I did! The whole day and then the next day too!
I'm watching, and don't know yet,if you obeyed the big rule, witch is wait a half hour, and pick up his trail again. Watch Big woods bucks,Hal Blood, best tracker in Maine, where the big bucks rome
In this situation the 30 min rule did not apply because I bumped him the last hour of daylight, so I needed to keep moving on him.
@swostillwateroutdoors I got it now
Wow. Do you ever stop talking?Bro and just hunt
Hahah, the talking is edited condensed into the hunt, I talk at certain points to keep you all up to speed on what is happeneing but when I am going miles on end without talking!
@@swostillwateroutdoors fair
How do you wash this bag, it seems the frame doesn't separate with the bag
That is a great question, I have never tried to do that??
lol…. SMH
Any reason for the shaking of your head?! haha
Do you still use this? or have you find something better with flip up lens caps?
Still using it! Just sighted it tonight and it is shooting within an inch of bullseye at 100 yards!!
@@swostillwateroutdoors nice! i found used sig romeo msr with caps. If that does not work, i order this one.
Thanks
Hope you enjoy the rangefinder if you get it!
@ I did pull the trigger on that one. I’m going to use it this week.
@ also I am blown away with how tiny it is and easy to use. I have so much room in my chest rig for other goodies.
Yes super small!! Great little range Finder!!
11:24 pm when you were on the road?
Must have been a typo! Meant AM!
The area of rubs you were amazed by looks like machinery came through. Several of the saplings were cut low smoothly like a saw or blade, not torn. Im not positive but, sure didn't look like deer damage. Good luck in the future.
It was a really confusing spot, because some of it looked like a brush hog and the other looked like rubs?!?! you might be correct!
Boy I thought northern Maine had a lot of blow downs! You got to be an Olympic hurdler in those woods 😂. Great videos 👍
That can’t be this year because we don’t have snow yet
Correct! This was from 2023!
9 days but who’s counting 🦌
Amen hahaha!!!!!
I love the idea but it's so hard to walk on nice up to the big bucks. They will be long gone by the time u get to them. That's why it took u 9 years to kill something this way. I would definitely try calling more while walking. Just my 2 cents congrats tho
No doubt! It is stupid tough to pull off! I will say, there is a certain level of skill a guy needs to have to be a great tracker, I am getting there but the best trackers always seem to have some age to them! Some skills do not come easy!
New sub from Maine......Wicked good hunt man.
Appreciate that!!!! I am sure desperate for snow right now….pretty rough watching season dwindle away with now snow I. The forecast!!
Damn I love the walking bucks down or trying to!! I was holding my freaking breath as you walk!! Lol. New sub from northern Mn
Heck yeah!!! Nice to get some MN guys following along!!! You live in an amazing state for big woods chunks of land!!!
@ Absolutely man!! Glad to be here!! Your stand build with those telephone poles was epic and inspiring!!
@@craigrock8444 Heck yeah thanks dude!!!!
Tough hunting up there. Wolves have taken over. I hunt 30 miles south of Duluth. Never had a problem with wolves until this year. They are all over my trail cam
You are right on the edge of some moose in that country too!!! The wolves have put a serious hurting on the deer herd in northern MN…WI is better off yet but in a few years we may be the same condition!!!
@swostillwateroutdoors I live in northern wisconsin and the deer herd here is awful, wolves everywhere. My hunting cabin in northern minnesota just doesn't produce the bucks it used to either , walking out in the dark morning hearing the howls is scary
Wolves are nomads. They pass through periodically. The deer come back when they move on. I've seen it hundreds of times.
@@ltcavret7574 We have seen 3 wolf kills within a mile of my house in the Remer area in the last month. Rare to see twin fawns anymore and lots of solo does by Fall - even after the extremely mild winter last year.
That area is def hit hard by the wolves!!
The Minnesota accent is strong in you haha
Also is it already snowing in North North minnesota?
Bahahahhaha!!! Funny thing is my dad grew up on the iron range of MN so the accent runs deep 😂😂😂😂
Unfortunately no…and the forecast does not look promising 😭😭
Iron ranger here!
Nice!!! Haha!! My dad grew up in little old marble Mn!
Great video. This gets me pumped for WI opener!
Heck yeah dude...it is almost here!!!! Praying we get some snow!!!!!
That buck has to walk all day because there are no deer up there, the habitat doesn't support many, and the dam wolves eat most of them, but good luck
Um ok 🥴🤡🥴
I had a buddy tell me that one of the things he notices is that I never bump deer on these tracking hunts…goes to show that there are so few deer that I am very seldom walking up on any deer! Go anywhere else even back in Wisconsin and you are bound to bump into deer often!
You have a good life enjoy watching your videos. The pictures at the end are always the best.
Thanks!!! We are def blessed to live the lifestyle that we live!!
Season isn't open for rifle in Wisconsin for rifle
This is from last year :)
