Follow along as Roxy the 2 year old Golden heads west to bird-hunting candy land. Warm and dry conditions make for tough scenting, but no worries, Roxy's nose knows. Here we hunt grassy draws, old crop field edges, and sage brush swales. We had 4 days of hunting but only recorded two as I was busy the entire time. We also hunted vast sections of hilly prairies and grasslands with plum thickets,...
Great days. Great Dogs. Iowa Pheasant Hunt 11/23

Two separate late November days in Iowa hunting wild pheasants on public land. Skye and Roxy do all the heavy lifting, they are field bred golden retrievers. At time of filming Skye is almost 8 and Roxy a shade over 2 years old. Hunting with a dog will change your life in so many good ways. Enjoy.
Minnesota Pheasant Hunt. Late Season. Wild Roosters. December 2023.
มุมมอง 2.2K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
After Christmas I head to Southern Minnesota to hunt with Skye and Roxy the golden retrievers. With no snow and warm weather the late season hunting is difficult but we manage to find some birds. I'm mainly a public land hunter, but the second half of the video we are on private ground.

Fun Iowa Pheasant hunt 2023

November 3rd 2023 hunting public land in Iowa. Me, Skye, and Roxy got our first ever three rooster limit in Iowa. I love hunting with these field bred golden retrievers. They have great noses and instincts for hunting, I highly recommend the breed for any upland hunter. Every time I take these girls afield they impress me with something new.

This is a hunting video made up of various clips from the early part of the 2023 MN Pheasant season. Filmed 100% fair chase public land wild birds. The dogs are the star of the show here. Skye and Roxy are both field bred golden retrievers. Zeus appears as well, he is a black lab and an excellent hunter.
Great picture
Thanks!
Hey, nice! Although I prefer Skye's style, Tracy apparently knows what's up too. Hot beef sandwich looked pretty good!
Skye was relaxing over the weekend, but will be paws 🐾 down in KELOLAND very soon.
What area were you hunting. I live in kato. If you want to hunt around the area we could meet up one of these weekends
Good job Roxy & Skye! They're both fine bird dogs. Look forward to your videos.
Thanks Randy good luck in all those far off places you're hunting the rest of the season.
Awesome video, we just finished hunting Iowa's opening weekend!
I haven't been down yet, but hope to go soon!
Geez, Otis, just go back so I don't have to listen to the screaming. Great video!! The pups are looking good!
Gotta love the obedient dogs! 😅
Thanks for the video. I have had 3 Goldens from hunting stock. Hunting with one now. We are headed to North Dokota on the 17th. Thanks again
They are special dogs for sure. Good luck in North Dakota Bill!
Great stuff!! Looks like a memorable trip. Grouse aren't the easiest birds to hunt with a flusher, but you guys made it work. Best wishes on the rest of the season.
Thanks Loo! I was a tad nervous trying a new bird in land I'd never seen before. Roxy took to it like a fish to water. I wore a JCW hoodie most of that trip. Covered in dust and with a few new barb wire holes, I have to think that it brought good luck with it.
@@GoldenSkye Grouse are certainly not as wily and intelligent as pheasants, but the terrain is markedly different. You guys did great!
Nice habitat 👍
Yup they've got some great prairies and wetlands in Iowa. I've been missing it ever since the season ended.
was the part that golden retrievers are not a good choice for the serious hunter because of being too soft and loving and an overgown lapdog a joke or were you for real? are they a good choice for the serious hunter?
They are excellent hunters. That was a little bit of sarcasm. :)
Great video
Thanks James, it was a great day for sure.
what choke?
I/C in the bottom barrel Mod in the top. 12ga 1 1/4 ounce shells.
if the cylinder choke is not suitable or not?
@@sabrichejamil all depends on the range you want.

Just a quick note to thank you for sharing your hunts, they have been therapeutic in helping our young golden get over the loss of our older female. In a bit of coincidence, her name was Skye as well. We noticed our guy reacting to you calling your Skye on the videos. He sat and watched every moment, so now he knows where she is and that she is happy and chasing birds. Dogs are amazing and we love our goldens. Thank you!
I am so glad to hear how much you love your dogs, and that the videos have been a comfort to your younger golden retriever after the passing of your older female. The time we spend and the memories we make with our dogs are priceless.
do you have a instagram? would like to connect over a few questions
I've been late getting to your videos. Good work Marty! Give the pups a scratch for me.
Will do! And thanks for putting out more podcasts. They are great.
Thanks for the video! Always look forward to more of Skye and Roxy. So far the winter looks good for carryover, but we will need some moisture soon. You have a couple good pheasant hunters commenting!
Thanks a lot Randy! It was a great season. And yup, those guys are some great hunters that's for sure!
That town reminds me of Mr. Deeds😂
🤣I was waiting for someone to make the connection!!! Thank you!
Really enjoyable video. Skye is nice to watch and definitely works with. you. I love the tall Big Blue stem fields that are thick. Lets hope the drought lets some of it come back to what it was a few years ago. Have a great off season and I look forward to watching Roxy and Skye do their thing next year.
Curious. When you show that pheasant hit the power line, how far did you zoom in Shotcut? I'm still editing with a nearly 10-yr-old laptop & proxy videos, I think at 540p. So sometimes, like if my video shows a bunch of pheasants way, way out there, I know they're there, but I really can't see them at all when editing. All kind of guess work, & I never know quite what I'll end up with until the video is done exporting & I can view it on a larger screen. Probably time for a fairly major laptop upgrade.
Hmmm, I can't remember the zoom % right now. I know exactly what you're talking about, and I did the same thing as you said, I just took a guess while working with the proxy and it turned out. It would be handy not to have to deal with proxys at times. My computer is 8 years old, so I'm in the same boat.
You're right, words can't express your love for your dogs, but your video & pictures sure did. Nice work!!! Very, VERY fun to watch. A few of those flushes were spectacular. And a deer here. An owl there. I love how proud Skye is of her roosters. The circles just out of reach! 😂 She just loves having them. Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Nice video. Love your passion. Donning waders to cross the waters. I once stripped down and had to carry my brittany across because he hates water.
Great video! Love those beautiful Goldens and roosters! Thanks for sharing.
Hey Marty - I'm a setter guy but I train all makes and models of gun dogs at HutsonHeritage in Idaho. I have come to enjoy goldens immensely and was excited to find your videos. I have since shared them with my golden client/friends. Keep up the excellent work and continue to - Enjoy Your Dog(s)!
I'm really glad you've enjoyed the videos! I'm just a blue collar guy and not a master hunter nor dog handler. That being said I absolutely love upland hunting and watching these dogs work. I learn all I can about bird hunting and dog handling, enjoy the successes I have, and always learn when I make a mistake. My belief is that as long as you and the dogs are learning and enjoying your time afield, then you're on the right path. Both dogs are from hunting lines of golden retrievers. Thank you Jack.
Some gorgeous fish! Browns? My family has spent a lot of time in the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming and we'd fly fish the streams. Mostly Brookies, but some Rainbows and Cutthroats in certain places. Great hunt. When that bird flushed at 8:40, you could HEAR it was a rooster. Big, strong flush. Very cool. It's hard not to beat ourselves up over the misses, but all we can do is keep hunting and keep shooting. Excellent master class on finding downed birds. Patience and trust the dogs. Great idea to have that orange ribbon to mark the initial fall site. Was that bird dead when Skye brought him back? Love the pics at the end. Fantastic stuff!!
Yup, those are both browns from streams in the MN driftless region. It is some pretty good fishing down there. Lots of browns, some stocked rainbows, and a few brookies. Yeah that last bird was still blinking when Skye brought him back. I would love to know if he was running or hiding, but those cattails are a lot thicker than they look on camera! I couldn't see the dogs much, just heard them rustling around as they searched. That bird made the whole trip :)
@@GoldenSkye That was an incredible recovery and would make anyone proud! Likewise, I would give about anything to know exactly where the birds go when they escape, how often they relocate, etc.. Those cattails looked plenty thick on the video, so I can only imagine what they were like in real life!

We had a Brittany that caught a live healthy rooster and pinned it in the water on the edge of a drainage ditch...
Love seeing how happy dogs are when they are working for birds. Glad you were able to recover the second bird. Great video. Thanks.

A pheasant hunt back in time! Haha, just had to give you a hard time. Such a cool snag on that second bird. You've got some great pups!!
😆edited to the correct year of 2023🎉.
Nice short hunt - so cool that Skye caught the second rooster! Another great video, thanks!
Nothing like a day afield with good dogs.
Good work Marty! Love watching Skye and Roxy, Keep after 'em!
Great video, I love your golden retrievers. Were they hard to train to stay in close? What exactly does "field bred" mean?
Most popular hunting dogs have two varieties. There's dogs bred for the show ring, and dogs bred for field use, which is hunting. These dogs are from lines of hunting golden retrievers. They tend to have a little shorter fur than a show dog, and often a little darker color, often with a red hue. The training is pretty easy. They already have the natural instinct to hunt, so learn through exposure to game birds. As far as staying close, it's just something you work on during training and hunting. I am not a dog trainer, so just do the best I can. I'm sure most any golden retriever can hunt, it just takes a little time.
You're like most of us, pretty decent dogs, on a good day shoot well and on a bad day really not well. Enjoying your videos. I have another 5 months till our season starts.
Are those quarter moon goldens
No, they are from kennels in MN and WI.
@@GoldenSkye cool
Great video and beautiful dogs! I hunt with a Golden, and love how everything changes when he gets "birdie." The pace quickens, the tail wags faster and faster, then in circles; it's almost like he's drunk on bird scent! Your video captures this very well - thank you for sharing!!
Thanks for the comment, that's what I try to show on the videos. There's nothing like watching a good bird dog work in the field.
Just came across your channel and subscribed The first bird dog I hunted with was a Golden Retriever. Best dog I’ve ever hunted over. Absolutely love them. Only reason I don’t have one is because of the junk that gets in there hair from hunting. So I have Labs. But man they are great upland dogs hands down. Look forward to seeing more vids. Thx.
Hi great video where do to hunt in iowa I am from nw iowa and have lots of great bird land
50565 guy here nwia too
Yeah in iowa I hunt the north west.
Beautiful dogs! I also hunt with a Golden - my favorite bird dog by far! Thanks for sharing.
Early season conditions make it so easy for cripples to disappear. Incredible find by Skye. The world is right again when your dog recovers a bird that could just as easily have been lost. Looks like the season is going well!! Great video, take care.
Way to get after 'em! Great dogs and lots of fun. Makes me wish I spent more time last season chasing roosters. Give Roxy and Skye an ear scratch for me. Randy S
Those are not your run of the mill GRD's. You can tell they have American Field in her blood lines. They blend so well in that environment!
Very cool. My wife wants a goldie and I need a hunting buddy for water and upland. How are they in a kayak or canoe?
Haven't tried that yet, although I've brought the older dog out in a 14 foot jon boat for duck hunting and she was fine with it. They are great dogs.
Hope this can help but I’ve taken mine out in a hunting boat at 5 in the morning heading in then later out of a swamp. They love the water so like most bird dogs there going to want to take a dip before they get in the boat, but then my golden retriever will hop in the boat with us on command, and since he’s such a good cuddler he’ll just sit right infront of me letting me hug/ hold him Last year we were heading out to the swamp and didn’t know our friends dog was already out there, he freaked out my dog but my golden just gave him a little growl tho stayed in the boat. There good friends he just wasn’t expecting to see another dog out in the swamp. So yeah golden retrievers can be great with boats/kayaks as long as you work with them
They LOV ANY excuse to get near water!
This is Midwest pheasant hunting. This is not pheasant shooting at a club with planted birds, dog handlers, people to pick up your shells and train your dogs for you. There is a big difference! Not that I don't like a nice social setting... but this is what we do that no one sees. Thank you for sharing!
I need to book a trip with a guide!
Awesome work, Skye & Roxy! Looks like you guys had a pretty great season! --Ace
