His followers were not gullible people, they were skeptical. Thomas did not believe that he was risen at first, he said he would not until he could see him and put his fingers in the wounds in his hands. People need to seriously consider what they would be willing to sacrifice. The entire Roman Empire and Jewish peoples were against him, yet he went down in Jewish history as a man without sin. There were no other such men before or after who could claim such.

Jesus espoused what he thought of this many times in the gospels. Called it for what it is.

I'm no pastor , but I like to think that I've studied the Bible and in my human nature , I'll be damned if I would set off into the world to proclaim something I did not witness . Yes I realize that people that did not observe the resurrection still preached the resurrection of Christ. People that did not see the resurrection are compelled by Faith to believe, which is far different than the eye witnesses . The disciples did not have to have faith because they trusted their eyes. They had I guess what you might want to call observable faith? Nobody was going to convince them they didn't see what they saw when they saw what they saw the day they saw it .

@ No, as Christians we are not obsessed with being word-perfect as the Islamic theology is with the presumed perfection of the Koran (a standard it is far from achieving) We know that the bible was inspired by God but written by men in human language and is thus subject to human interpretation. Jesus did not write a text, he told us his message of truth and love and its main means of transmission was by word and inspiration. So it remains to this day. Being able to recite chunks of the Holy Texts Muslim-style is not a substitute for a heart open to the Spirit.
