A corrected and expanded, 2000-level version of my United States Civilization to 1877 video on Antebellum America.
I've clarified my remarks on interracial and interethnic violence during the California Gold Rush with some additional statistics. There was a significant amount of violence in the region, perhaps more than other parts of the U.S., but the level of violence was lower than popular culture on the American West would suggest, which is a point I tried to make in a previous version of this video, albeit with less detail.
In a previous version of this video, I accidently said that Stephen A. Douglas was a congressman when he put forth the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. While Douglas had been a congressman, by 1854 he was in the Senate.
I've also added additional discussion of the American West, including on the Oregon Trail, the western territory of Utah, and I've added additional discussion of the motivations of Presidents Zachary Taylor and Franklin Pierce. I've also discussed the Know-Nothing Party in more detail as well, and how they basically ran Millard Fillmore as a Whig in the South, a region with a lower immigrant population that thus would have been less interested in Know-Nothing nativism.
