First FPV Flight Gone Wrong?! | Manual Mode & Fall Foliage with the DJI Avata 2
In this video, I take the DJI Avata 2 for an awesome fall flight at Glastonbury High School in Connecticut. With the beautiful backdrop of fall foliage, soccer practice in action, and the perfect crisp air, it was an unforgettable day for FPV flying.
My buddy DP joined me for this session, and I gave him a quick run down on how to fly the Avata using the motion controller. While his first flight was a bit rocky due to a miscalibration (not his fault!), he nailed it on his second attempt-even though I forgot to hit record! DP shares his honest review of flying the drone, which gives great insight into the learning curve of FPV.
Afterward, I took the Avata 2 up for a spin in manual mode, cruising through the fields, hitting gaps, and just ripping around. The combination of the scenic environment and the thrill of FPV made it an incredible flight. If you enjoy FPV adventures, fall vibes, and real-life flying experiences, this one's for you!

Join me on this epic flight as I take my DJI Avata 2 through the stunning Riverfront Park in Glastonbury, Connecticut. While I attempted to use an ND filter that turned out to be a knockoff, slightly cropping the footage, I didn’t let that stop me. Hey, everyone! I'm back with another FPV video, and this one got a little wild. Crashed my Avata 2 not once but twice - first into a barn in my backyard, and then again into the grass at a football field. But no worries, the Avata is still in top shape. The only downside? It got a little grass-stained, but nothing a quick lens wipe couldn't fix. Oh, and I did lose an ND filter in the process. F...

What drone was the intro shot with?
@@danieln5578 DJI Air 3
Resort in a nice word for trailer park. Lol good bud man
lol I thought he was about to RAP a song..
nice shots! do you fly in “fcc” or “ce” mode?
You turn off EIS for gyroflow, okay. So what settings do you make when setting up gyroflow? Can you help me with the smoothness? By the way, it is so difficult to use a drone in Turkey. I mostly fly with zero GPS. Flying without permission is also a big problem. Fortunately, I do not have this problem because I am a police officer.
Dude, I think I've improved my skills a lot in terms of joysticks. Now I need to take myself to a new level. For this reason, I'm planning to buy an RC 3. I just watched your first flight in manual mode (6 months ago) and now I watched this video. You've really improved yourself. What do you recommend for an RC 3 remote control?
In my opinion I have tried Liftoff and Uncrashed but I think the DJI Virtual Simulator is pretty good and very similar to what you can actually do with the Avata 2. I don't think the DJI people designed it for fun. Greetings to all DJI pilots. Very very good video, Mate. You deserve one more subscriber like me! Hugs from England.
For the life of me, I cannot get gyroflow to look good with my Avata 2. Still get micro jitters and jelly roll, Parts a usable but others just no good. Rocksteady seems just fine for me. Are there any secret settings for gyroflow to get the best out of the Avata2. Cheers, awesome video.
too much yapping, no conclusion or summary for key takeaways
@@jensonchen I appreciate the feedback! Any questions you have or key takeaways you feel were left out, feel free to ask 👊🏼
🔥🔥🔥
The motion controller is for righthanded only😢
That's not true. You can choose in configuration which hand you'd like to use with your motion controller. I've tried both, left and right handed settings.
@kaymillenaar9465 you cannot switch the buttons on the left to the right😉 they are at different positions. Try to use those buttons with your left hand and we will talk again
I enjoyed watching the great video.
What simulator are you using to practice with the FPV Controller 3?
Bro!!! That area looks like GTA5, Senora Way. Like it has the same landmarks and rock formations. Nice video by the way. 😮😂😂
@@eddiecane33 much appreciated!
It’s tried the Mavic has two options to shoot in Dlog and Dlog M. It takes a bit more work to grade the footage. The 48 meg thing is a bit of a gimmick. The base sensor is 12 megs. It’s cut into many bits. While it’s 48 megs , each section gathers less light and color than a larger sensor. If the light is good it’s a nice image. It’s my favorite drone.
look like use motion controller got better footage
your getting better!
i have questions why need gyroflow than rocksteady what's comparison?
it completebly stabilizes the video its an app where you edit the footage through drone's FOV system
great bro❤
Thanks 🔥
Excellent videos... buy avata 2 very recently (I already have an air 3)... as you do to learn how to fly in ACRO... I'm a little scared... greetings from Argentina
It’s scary at first but you’ll get the hang of it, the more practice the better! Cheers! 🇦🇷
Hey bro now that you fly with the Remote controller 3 is it worth investment or is the motion controller just as good
@@jonmendoza8596 Great question. 100% worth the investment, better precision & control, and you have the ability to fly full manual mode. I also prefer the two handed controls, as opposed to requiring all those hand and wrist movements with the motion controller, which is better for more casual flying. I’d recommend the RC3 👊🏼
@@mailmanmedia thank you 🙏🏼
I enjoyed the wonderful cinematic video. Have a nice day.❤
@@시커먼선생Mr.Blackman thank you, likewise.
Air 3 - I am so close right now to pulling the trigger. The only thing holding me back is the possibility that the supposed Air 3S may soon be released. I have no idea if this will actually be the case. There are many so-called 'leaks' on social media, but definitely no confirmation yet from Dji on a updated version of the Air 3. I'll give it till the end of October, and if not, I'll be buying the Air 3 for sure. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on your Air 3. Much appreciated 👍
Update: I got the AIR 3S. So glad I waited.
I really liked your personal opinions and insights, but the background music was annoying.
I agree about the music being a distracting irritant. I kept trying to turn the volume further down to get rid of the music but then I couldn't hear the review. The repetitiveness of the music was like a Chinese water torture session.
My apologies to you both. Thank you very much for the feedback, I'll be sure to turn the volume of the music down in future videos when I am speaking.
Im saving to buy myself one❤

Hey, thanks a lot 👊🏼
I had to stop watching. Choppy vids due to desynced frame rate are not my thing
Oh no! Could have been because I was recording to the internal storage of the drone instead of the SD card by accident. Thank you for letting me know.
so true, maybe he edited in 24 fps but recorded in 30 fps... Check your worflow next time dude!
Nobody bothered you yet about not having a spotter? Good deal! You must live a a great area with nice people! Good video, I enjoyed your location!
Most of the time people have inquiries about the drone, they aren't really ever concerned with me having a spotter, although I have started bringing a VO with me during my flights.
how much battery cycle u have done and please tell me its effect ur flight time??
Hey, thanks for the question! So far, I've done about 38 battery cycles on the DJI Air 3. Honestly, the battery is still performing really well. I haven’t noticed any major drop in flight time yet, even after multiple charges. I’m getting around 35 min per charge, which is still solid for what I’m doing. I’ll definitely keep an eye on it and update if anything changes. Appreciate you watching and commenting!
@@mailmanmedia i also have another question that when i charged my all 3 battery so i keep it in battery hub or seprate??
Another great flight. Might I suggest a folding landing pad. I SEE YOU LAUNCH/LAND on hard packed dirt, kicking up a fair amount of grit, sand, dust right into the Avata 2 motors. They can take a fair amount of abuse, but obviously not unlimited. You might consider a small foldable landing pad, throw it in your gear bag.
I need to do this, I'm constantly landing in dirt, sand, grass, etc. Thanks for the tip!
@@mailmanmedia you bet!
why 02:15 ist lagging? the film is not fluently
Great question. Not sure.
Glad to hear your thoughts. I bought the FPV Controller 3 for the same reason. I barely have flown with motion controller - I am much more comfortable with a conventional controller flying DJI stuff for years. But I aspire to full manual and there's no time like the present to try the simulator and the VERY different stick control required, I just hope I am not to set in my habits to learn full manual. I agree that DJI put a LOT of thought/work into helping beginners step up to full manual. Beginner mode, then normal, then sport, then Manual with axis limits, then the full Monty. Without the wading pool, I am not sure I would just jump off the highest diving board into the deep end!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. DJI has made it so easy for anyone to start flying in full acro mode! That is the exact progression I did, as you can see in the video. I wish you the best of luck on your drone journey, remember to have fun!
I was amused that your first post-flight comment was about battery life. I am new to FPV, a stone cold amateur, after 3+ years flying conventional drones, I have Mavic 3 Pro, Air 3, Mini 4 Pro, and a dozen others, but even I was thinking man, the Avata 2 stays in the air forever. I hope to be flying full manual if another week or 2, not rushing myself. Great flight. I think vesting different parks might be a good idea. You show up same place day after day, you might get on some peoples nerves. Avata 2 is really quite, but it's not silent, lol.
Haha, it happened to be on the top of my mind! Agreed. I remember watching so many FPV videos back in the day, and the remote pilot was always complaining about how short the battery life was. I definitely feel lucky to step into this niche after technology has improved so much. No rush brother, I'd recommend Liftoff for practice.
Nicely done. I do have a question/concern. Flying solo with the goggles on. From what I know of FAA regs. it's not permitted. You HAVE to have physical eyes on the drone. A huge PITA! I imagine of you are low profile, as you were here, not a lot of people around, as you had here all will be good. But if you grow this channel, as most people would like to do, then you need a) a Part 401 if you want to make any money. If you are strictly flying recreational waiver, the TH-cam channel is fine, I've had one for a few years for camera drones. But flying without a spotter may get you a call from the FAA. There are people who love being killjoys and making problems for folks. It's usually not a problem until you get a lot of subs. It's a shame that the cameras and PIP allowing you to potentially see the drone don't get around the rule - I think that was the goal but no change to allow them vs. having a spotter that I have heard. I just don't know. What are your thoughts?
I truly appreciate your comment & concerns. I do hold a Part 107 so I can fly commercially. I also fly with a spotter for the most part. 100% of the time I make sure that airspace is clear, and I am not bothering anyone if there are people in these locations I am flying. It is also useful to strategize a flight path before launching that way I know it will be in line of sight and not lose connection.

Yo, whats good homie? New subber here, me and my Partner Bill have a show on wed night called Drone Therapy. We got you some subs a few weeks ago. Avata 2 is awesome! I watched ur Air 3 review the other day. well done bro. I need to learn how to color grade! But yea man Air 3 is badass. Do you have any carbon quads? like a 5inch 6s? I fly alot but iv come to realizxe the Avata 2 shines best in sport and normal modes.
Hey, what's going on! Heck yea brother, I'm glad to hear that. The Drone Therapy show sounds dope I'm gonna check ya'll out, thanks for the subs, much love fr! & I currently don't have any carbon quads, looking to invest in one soon, 5inch for sure. Would you happen to have any recommendations for a 5inch?
but sure, what else to buy?
What do you mean? What other drones to buy?
Please don't use ChatGPT for information on where to fly. Check with your local municipalities
Here in much more densely populated Germany, it is impossible if not forbidden by law to fly a drone in cities. This is very strictly regulated by the European Drone Regulation. In addition, the airspace is much more closely monitored, so that flying in a large city not only requires a corresponding drone flying licence, but also registration and approval from air traffic control. This means that drone flying for amateurs in Germany is de facto only possible in very rural and remote areas. And even then, this is viewed very critically, as many people are meanwhile very annoyed by the buzzing above their heads.
That is very unfortunate. Sad to hear that.. I bet there are some great spots to fly in Germany closer to the city too. I am licensed and registered, but I do know from experience that getting approval from airspace traffic control can be very difficult.
being not so high over water, did you turn off sensors underneath? i have read that it is very risky flying low over water, that the drone can all of a sudden decide to land
I did not turn off the sensors underneath. Very interesting, I'll be sure to keep this in mind.
Don’t land in dirt sand you’ll mess up the motors
Ah. I've been doing that for so long now. Usually end up having to clean em 🤣
Don't tell that to my avata 😅
For the 46min battery life, that's not what you're getting. You're not gonna get any flights over 35min. Plus, you're also landing it with around 10% battery remaining. You don't fly until 0% and THEN land. Also, you paid for those features and are probably using them. 4k60 10-bit video, obstacle avoidance, AR overlays, having these enabled uses more battery. You should expect most flight to be around the 30-35min mark. Assuming it's all set up, and you have all the advanced features enabled, and at the best quality, and on an average day with some wind, and playing it safe with your batteries and not deep cycling below 10%, you should expect around a solid 30 minutes of flight time. That's without feeling pressured. Should be able to get 30 without feeling like you're pushing the limits and risking anything. You do gotta be a bit more careful and fly more conservatively for getting around 35 minutes, though.
Thank you for going more in depth on this. I'd like to see how long it actually can last, one of these days I'm going to time a flight.
@@mailmanmedia under ideal conditions, with standard settings, I'm pretty confident you won't make it beyond 40min. IDK how they actually do that test, maybe they override it or something, but you'll be forced to land before you can actually reach 0%. I never take it below 10%, but idk really how you could get it to use to 0%, while also STAYING airborne.
With the air 3, you can actually get like a 140mm zoom equivalent at good quality. You can do 3x zoom with digital, but 3x kinda sucks. Isnt really usable for anything important or professional. However, you can 2x it and use the tele lens set to 6x. Some light editing and cleanup, and you can get really usable images with that sensor at 6x. Especially when using pixel binning for the 48mp images.
My man! I appreciate the comment. I actually used this technique at a shoot last week. There are some really cool shots you can get playing around with the digital zoom at 2x & even 3x in my opinion. Hype to edit the footage and show you what I was able to capture 👊🏼
