As a Batangueño, I am a bit skeptical on how Subli is being interpreted nowadays. Subli is a traditional dance of old Batangueños - a religious and sort of a ritual dance offer to the miraculous wooden Crucifix of Batangas. It is not accompanied by joyful and festive music. But with somehow eerie monotone drum beats only. Women circle around half toed, back and towards the crucifix, and men kneeling and jumping beside the women while clacking their bamboo clappers. It is dramatic, no flamboyant movements, and in a sense enchanting, and hauntingly beautiful. Although, I appreciate the effort and creativity of today’s dancers, but Subli has a subdued mystical uniqueness of its own as compared to most Filipino festive folk dances. Most importantly, subli starts and ends with chant of songs and prayers to the cross.
