Not sure what he is doing and why. I once had to reinforce trusses due to an addition that caused a snow pile condition. The engineers solution was to add 2 x 4 perpendicular at the roof deck and reinforce the trusses with plywood, similar to what they shiw.

I like using cedar shims same size as hinge. Then screw it tight as possible to ensure no door sag in the future

Remove the hinge from the jamb and set your king screw behind the hinge, concealing it. imo it looks a lot cleaner than having a different screw on the hinge.

Are they too far forward? Seems like you should get into the stud with either set of holes. As long as the frame carries the door and not the jamb, you should be okay.
