I just stumbled across this video and had to immediately subscribe. I’m starting a Master’s program for History in January and love seeing what a typical day is like!
Did you get full funding from your professor??
So glad I stumbled upon your channel. The esthetic of your shots not only validate the way I have been romanticizing Columbia/NYC but your content is exactly what I have been looking for. Finishing up my undergrad on the west coast and looking at several MFA/MLA programs on the west coast. Thanks for your insights on Columbia! Can't wait to binge the rest of your videos to soak up what you've shared.
Did you get full funding from your professor??
Exactly the content I want TH-cam to recommend me
More history book recommendations please!! Love all your videos
I'm back re watching some of these to get excited for the fall! I watched your videos all through application season andddd was finally accepted into my program with full funding :')
Are you get full funding from your professor?? For master's degree
I enjoyed it. Blessed with a full ride -- including ALL expenses ...
love love love when you upload!!!! i'm currently applying to grad school in europe so your content is peak inspiration <3
Ohh that’s so kind thank you 🥹 I watched so much grad school content before doing my masters like you and totally know the feeling!! Wishing your the best in your applications!
your vlogs are so motivating!!
Oh thank you so much, it’s not all productive all the time but I try my best :)
14:56 I can hear a cardinal outside of your window.❤
Oh wow that’s so impressive you can tell what bird it is by the song! I have them singing quite often and it’s always my favorite thing
@@christinaobo❤❤❤
I like these kinds of videos because they let me experience studying at an American campus that I'll never have the ability to.
Oh I’m happy to share the experience with others 🥰
Love your series! What program are you in? I'm doing part-time MHA at Columbia alongside my full-time job as an RN at Mount Sinai. Starting to feel a little burnt our aka senioritis lol. I felt this in nursing school and continued anyway so I'm sure it will be fine. Still betting on the value that this program will bring for myself, the profession and the many lives who depend on quality healthcare ❤️
Oh man you are doing proper work and will help save so many lives down the line, it will all be worth it even if it feels like a lot of work right now! I am currently enrolled in a full-time masters in international history that is first year at Columbia and second year at LSE in London. I soooo feel you on feeling burnt out and wanting this semester to end, especially I can imagine how much of a work load it is with a full time job. I am wishing you only the best as we try to push through and finish up the semester strong ☺
Loved this update :)
I hope all goes according to plan re: your French plans!
Oh thank you so much! I hope so too and then I’ll share it all :)
Wait a minute... Is that Clarice Lispector on your drawing-room bookshelf? I'm Brazilian, so I just get very happy when I see Brazilian authors on foreigner's shelves 😅
YES it is!!! I love her! Obsessed!! I have more of her work on another book shelf that is not in this shot :)
@@christinaobo She is just unbelievable! If you have the chance, give Cecília Meireles and Lygia Fagundes a try. They're my absolute favorites when comes to Brazilian literature.
Loved the video! Keep up the energy!! I’m about to graduate from my MA program in Fashion Studies so I will greatly enjoy watching your vlogs next academic year!
Aww thank you so much and huge congrats on finishing up your own program so soon! I will keep sharing the grad journey especially as I move to London soon 😃
Huzzah!
Welcome to another week at grad school! Out of curiosity, are you in grad school or thinking about it? 📚
Happy to help you connect the dots and bring your ideas to life 🙌
Yes so happy to be using it as I plod along with my research ☺️
I somewhat empathize with your experiences, however, I’m a master’s candidate. Thanks for all of your insight and what you shared. My spring semester has also flown by, seemingly…. Our courage and ambition likely generates “imposter syndrome” in graduate school. Keep up the diligence and thank you again for your transparency, that is inadvertently encouraging. ✨🤗hugs! ✍🏽🖋📚📖📜
Oh it’s reassuring to hear I’m not the only one who feels like this! The spring semester is going by soooo fast and wishing you the best in your own studies too ☺️🤓
I felt intimidated by what was required for the course, one heavily loaded college semester. With my other obligations I had a crisis of faith ... I wanted to drop out and pare down my curriculum. I came to the professor for some unfathomable reason... he listened, nodded his cloud of white while he considered what I had relayed... he nudged me, shoulder to shoulder... gently urging me to stay, whispering, "It's not hard... there's just a lot of it." Now, you've given me four inviting titles I have never read! I'll start at the top... truly, this is just what I would like! Thank You!
YES! Exactly this feeling! There’s simply so much to do in grad school and so much is expected, you have to learn what to prioritize and where to put your energy into. It takes a while to figure it out and get your own priorities straight, but it’s so helpful when others like in your case your professor let you know you aren’t the only one that feels like this. And so glad to have provided more books to read :)
* Hello Christina, Thank you for conveying a sense of your life as a grad student. Funny … when I was there microfiche was so cutting edge... unfortunately my tech savvy hasn’t progressed much since then - still trying to figure out this battery-operated pocket phone thing.😅 My daughter just finished a masters at Chapel Hill last year; it still seems that most every semester of grad school begins with 3 to 4 weeks of pummeling overwhelmedness… In retrospect, just keep showing up - you’re obviously bright and capable enough to be teaching this stuff some day if you so choose. Look forward to your next post, and thanks again! Soldier on, ~Spike 🥸 .
Thank you so much for watching and it’s so funny to hear about how different research methods have evolved over time especially with technology!! At times, I’m surprised more advancements haven’t been made to make historical research more easy and accessible but I’m assuming with time it might change. Yes, each semester seems to start off with feelings of confidence and being able to do it all, only to then be met with overwhelming emotions 😅
Oh I love this platform! Makes it so much easier to take notes!
I know! Making all the mental maps :)
"... I've been so impressed with the NYPL..." British Library: 'Hold my sherry...'😁
HAHAH next year I’ll be studying in London and hopefully can explore the British Library too :)
I AM A VISUAL THINKER TOO!!!!!
Heheh me too!!! If it’s not written down it’s not in my head 😭
so... do you think we know the author in a way, ...... that is ...whether we can't get through the book for one reason or another ...or .... regardless of obvious or pressing reasons to show some restraint... we just can't resist the impulse until we've read the entirety.
I think this is true to a certain degree for me -- I want to know what ends up happening and feel accomplished at having finished it in its entirety! But also I can't life and must admit I forget to finish many books too...
Thanks so much for your insights! I received an offer for the masters you’re pursuing and weighing wether I should take it or not. Your views help me a lot
Oh my god, that is so exciting! Feel free to reach out to me over Insta or email if you have any questions about the program itself :)
Thank you!
girrrl you gotta check in on that photos plant behind you. That little slice of nature is struggling! maybe a repot is needed bcs its roots are overgrown.
HAHA I know!!!! that plant has been dying for a while... I need to take better care of it
your points on MFA programs are so interesting! As a person who was considering something like this, I think you're right about the workshop aspects - this could be pretty disappointing for someone looking for more guidance. Good luck in London! I have a kind of love-hate relationship with this city but it is really fascinating and you can never get bored :)) Also where is your top from? the neckline is fantastic
Yes, I think workshops can be great at times but also feel a bit like a waste of time if you don't end up receiving helpful feedback. I can see how London would make someone have a love-hate relationship with it (I feel this way about NYC...) but can't wait to be in London so soon! And thank you for the compliment on the top 🥰 I got it from Cos on a black Friday sale! It might be lurking around online maybe in Depop???
oh i love cos haha, i will definitely look for it in online vintage shops! would love it if you made a video about your relationship with NYC! as someone from Europe who has never been, it's a city that really fascinated me as an idea @@christinaobo
No question... grad school is the right thing...and it could be that connections in the UK will be meaningful... in both the short and long term... what a delightful turn of events... I had no idea you would be spending a year in the UK...
Yes, I am so excited to see what comes of my year in London and can't wait to keep sharing as I go along my grad journey! Thank you for sticking along :)
Have you ever taken a writing workshop course or considered pursuing an MFA? I am always so curious to hear others' thoughts when it comes to trying to find ways to get better at writing or any other creative medium ✍
Love your videos keep em coming :)
Thank you so much! will for sure keep up with the book and grad school videos :)
My whole inner dialogues are me trying to force myself to be better and more productive in something. Right now, for instance, I'm in a debate about if I should use my rest hours for "productive resting", which in my brain means to consume chill content that is also "intelligent" (like to only watch TH-cam in my second language, English). This pressure and the anxiety that comes from it is always a main theme in my existence 😅
Haha this is exactly how I feel ALL OF THE TIME! And it is funny that you describe "productive resting" as I tell myself to do that too but sometimes end up not even feeling that rested at the end of the day and also not productive... it is a constant struggle
I found your channel yesterday, and its quite informative. I just got accepted to the MA program in history at Georgetown, and these vids are helping fuel my enthusiasm for grad school, whilst diminishing the abject terror.
A huge CONGRATULATIONS on getting into the MA program, that is so exciting! Only the best things ahead and even if it feels overwhelming, it will be the best time!
"Oh no, they don't have the blurb... that should be illegal." Lol, this is exactly how I feel. The Midwife's Tale sounds interesting. I'm surprised I haven't heard of it before.
HAHA I always hate when books don't have blurbs and only quotes from authors... it gives me nothing as the reader. Yes, I am so excited to read the Midwife's Tale for my class soon - will hopefully share my thoughts once I do :)
Hope you enjoy your reading.
Thank you, I really have been!
This is my school! I just finished my MA in Religion at Union and the Burke was the library that I studied in! You're right- no one knows about it. It's like Columbia's best kept secret. I was talking with a prof at UChicago who got his PhD at Columbia and he said he went there all the time because the reading room is usually so empty and it's like you have it all to yourself :) And they were probably filming Law & Order. I got a lot of emails from the building when I lived there telling us about filming days. It usually happens during a break, but sometimes during a semester too.
AWWW first off congrats on finishing the MA, that is so exciting! It really feels like no one knows about Burke and once I visited it, I really fell in love with it and how quiet it is in there given that not many go to study there. I think you are right - it was some legal or cop show that was taking place there! And for once I could say I left a classroom and had to walk through a film set 😅
There is nothing I love more than reading through collections of family letters and diaries in manuscript libraries. Especially fascinating are crosshatched letters-where a someone has handwritten in one direction and then turned the paper ninety degrees and written in that direction-then flipped the paper over and done the same thing. Sometimes this was done even on nearly-transparent onion-skin paper-especially in times when it was hard to acquire paper (such as the late 19th century US South). It is sometimes frustrating but always fascinating to puzzle these letters out. Both Heti and After Sappho are on my list. I had not thought about the similarities between the experience of reading this kind of experimental literature and the experience of facing a random archive box as we try to piece together a cohesive narrative about people’s lives.
OH MY, you are so right - there is such a similarity in trying to write from the archive and also creating a cohesive narrative of our own lives like Heti did in her most recent book! It seems like I tend to think of similar themes in both my fiction and non-fiction reading :) Yes, I find letters the MOST fascinating to read and I think you can glean so much information from them. That is so cool you have seen it on the onion-skin paper you mentioned - I have never seen that myself but now I hope I do one day....
Ah, love your vlogs! I’ve never done archival research, but it was so cool to hear about your experience.
Oh thank you and I am so happy to hear it is interesting to listen to even if you haven't done archival work! It is quite new to me so happy to share it all as I go along
This is my first video on your channel... may I ask is this archive available to writers...ie; historical fiction... screenplays... movie scripts etc? It seems like you have access to the original artifacts ... is one allowed to copy these or take a phone shot?
You have to request access from the archive itself and each one is different in terms of who it lets in or not (researchers, students, authors, etc). They have to give you permission to access the materials and then once you are there you can look at the materials and take photos of it (as long as the collection allows for it)!
Oh wow, awesome video! I've added the Martin Guerre book to my wtr 🤓 I also love that you talked about articles as well as books 😍
Thank you so much for the kind words! Yes, so much of grad school is reading scholarly debates so had to include the articles :)
I adored both The Midwife’s Tale and Martin Guerre when I read them in grad school (many years ago). As a social historian, I think both Davis and Ulrich opened new ways for me to approach my own research and writing. Harriet Jacobs is really powerful, too. I hope you enjoy them all as well. Thank you for your lovely channel!
Oh, that is amazing you have read all of these in grad school too! Thus far, I have only read the Davis and it provided so many new ways thinking of and doing research and can't wait to read the other two. Thank you so much for the lovely words and hope you stick around as I continue grad school!
City as an archive? Could not catch the name, but that class sounds so fascinating. Think I have to buy Harlem is Nowhere. Read Walking in Berlin last year for a class, by Franz Hessel, really enjoyed, might have to look at the Walter Benjamin Berlin book too. Most of the books I am reading this semester is somewhat theory heavy. A very good book I have on the curriculum this year is Floating coast, the environmental history of the Bering strait, very interesting and a bit brutal. A great history book I am also currently reading and forgive me if you recommended it on your channel( only remember someone online mentioning it) , One long night , A global history of concentration camps, it is both horrific and very well written.
It is city and the archive - the official title that I mumbled out too quickly! Yes, Harlem is Nowhere looks so good and I am excited to get to read it very soon for the class. Both of the books you mentioned reading for class now sound fascinating even though quite dark. I find theory books do always help inform my research ideas, so I felt like last semester I had a whole set of theory readings and this semester it is a varied example of readings. Always good to have a balance :)
Thank you for sharing! :) You said that this semester you aimed to buy used copies of all your books. Where did you get them in NYC?
So glad you liked me sharing all the books! I normally buy them either from used bookstores in NYC (my fav are Westsider and Argosy Bookstore) or I order them online with a retailer like Abebooks
@@christinaobo Thank you for sharing! I love your videos!
Sharing with you a selection of history books I have been reading this semester 📚Which one do you want to read the most?
All the courses sound very cool. I like a lot of early cold war stuff, took an East Asian History class, we went over early Japanese and Chinese culture.
@@davefischer2344 Oh that is very interesting! Not fully my line of study, but I can imagine it was fascinating to learn :)
@@christinaobo Yes very much so, I've been trying to get back into my reading of those topics, but I haven't had much time, maybe soon though a little bit on the side.
Love your vlog, Always wanted to go to Columbia, I imagine your readings are your very complicated at times, a lot of information packed in to do, at least I recall in my colloquium classes in my undergrad. Being a big reader myself I always find it fascinating understanding a lot of interesting parts of history. A lot of knowledge of APA, MLA, and Chicago style too for writing papers can be extremely cumbersome to say the least but I got through it.
if you come to the city, you need to have a plan.
How are you doing mrs Christina. Iam Arabic lady subscriber to several British and American TH-cam channels. I sent comments to you before. I thought you are still university student at final year , but I surprised you are teaching assistant. It great . There are also young lady her name rachel , she prepares PhD in American literature , have channel. You and her seem you still in early 20s . American people are very creative and active . Good luck to you in all aspects of your life .
Yes, I am currently a graduate student, but not doing any teaching or research assistant positions right now - mostly focusing on my own academic work. Thank you for sharing the fellow TH-camr and wishing you the best too!
