A Brief History of the Tatars

The Mongol Era and the Golden Horde

The establishment of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Tatar ASSR) in 1920 granted them some cultural recognition, but Soviet policies also suppressed Islamic practices and traditional ways of life. Despite these hardships, the Tatars contributed significantly to Soviet society, excelling in the arts, sciences, and military service.
Modern Times
Today, the Tatars are the second-largest ethnic group in Russia, with the majority living in the Republic of Tatarstan, where their cultural and linguistic heritage is actively promoted. The capital city of Kazan stands as a symbol of Tatar resilience and cultural pride, blending Islamic, Turkic, and Russian influences.
