Brad Mehldau - solo on “Brownie Speaks”
This one was a lot of work; but I was fascinated by how Brad Mehldau approaches standard chord progressions like this one, which is a variation of rhythm changes written by Clifford Brown. He always has such creative rhythmic ideas as well, and this one is no exception.

Thelonious Monk - Round Midnight (solo piano)
มุมมอง 9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
A powerful rendition of the classic ballad by the composer himself. This version is found on “Monk Alone” as well as “The Essential Thelonious Monk” which are both releases by Columbia Records from the 1960’s.
John Coltrane - soprano sax on “Chim Chim Cheree”

One of my favorite modal explorations by John Coltrane with his classic quartet. Similar idea to “My Favorite Things” except this was a few years later (1965), so the arrangement is even more open in form and the improv is wilder; more exotic.
Thelonious Monk - Monk’s Mood (solo intro)

This solo introduction from the Live at Carnegie Hall album with John Coltrane (1957) always fascinated me; so much to digest in here
Steve Lehman - alto sax solo from “Chimera/Luchini”

An amazing track from the 2008 album “Mise en Abîme” by the Steve Lehman Octet. I’m a big fan of Steve Lehman’s music; if you haven’t heard his latest album “The People I Love” I highly recommend you check it out.
Cory Henry - Take the A Train (solo piano)
มุมมอง 2.8K2 ปีที่แล้ว
A random improvisation by Cory Henry from a TH-cam video taken at NAMM 2013. Audio is not the best, but when I heard this I knew I had to transcribe it. A lot of great vocabulary to learn in here; it is basically a masterclass in Gospel and Bebop idioms, all conveniently laid out in C major.
Sonny Rollins’ short solo on “Oleo” (1954)

The tenor sax legend plays on his own composition as part of Miles Davis’ band. From the album “Bags’ Groove” - also featuring Thelonious Monk and Milt “Bags” Jackson
John Coltrane - Untitled Original 11383 (head only)

A 12-bar blues form from the album “Both Directions at Once” by the John Coltrane Quartet. The melody (soprano sax) and piano chords are shown so the concept of this tune can be understood.
