When he first came over from Ireland he was to continue his education , he was added to the class I was in at the Portsmouth Polytechnic. He played one of his early games against Wolves, where he made Billy Wright look like a amateur.

Famous old club same as ours at Everton great memories going there as a teenager in the 70s and all them league cup replays in 77 got a bit nasty in the 80s but that’s what you got then Don t think we lost a semi final at Villa park as previously said great memories

My dad was born and raised in Doncaster, but - so the legend goes - when he was a kid he went to watch Rovers (this would have been in the 50s) play West Brom, and was so utterly entranced by the style of their play (not to mention their cool kit) that he adopted them as his team, forever calling them "the mighty Albion." I was born in 1970 and grew up hearing stories about most of the players on this video. He only got to see them play live twice (once against Liverpool, once vs Leicester City), but followed them to his dying day. I miss him and wish I could have shown him this video. It's absolutely awesome. Thank you.

It would be hard for people to imagine today just how much bigger the F A Cup was than the League back in those days. Winning the League was great of course but most players and fans would take the cup if asked to choose back in 1970. To put it into perspective, Everton won the title that year but highlights of their title clinching game weren't shown on TV. I think BBC Grandstand may have shown literally 20 seconds on the following Saturday's programme and that was about it.

Unless I'm dreaming - I remember watching Hurst play for the Baggies when we were in Div 2 sometime around 1974 or 75???? I'm certain it was Geoff Hurst and I'm pretty certain he scored at home against York City.

I'd like to see how some of these pampered millionaire players of today would go on with a waterlogged leather ball on a muddy pitch.

Some great players unknown to most but fondly remembered by those lucky enough to see them play.

Been going to Goodison since the late 1950s and always thought the line between success and failure was the width of a cigarette paper. After the demise of the 1970 championship side, two poor seasons followed, Then in 1974-75 Billy Bingham created a team that looked odds on the win the league title, but two bad defeats late on to Carlisle and home to Sheffield United cost them dearly. The confidence lift going into the European Cup. with the likes of Bob Latchford, Martin Dobson, and Gary Jones could have altered the 70s hierarchy. Gordon Lee also came close to Cup glory, Players like Bruce Rioch and Duncan Mc Kenzie were brought in by John Moore's just before Billy Bingham was sacked, who despite poor league form was in the league cup semi final they later took the blues close to an FA Cup final in 1977. What price the leadership of John Moore's today, during this sad period in the blues history.
