Lee Ritenour & Friendship Live at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip, December 11 1978
When I started high school in 1977 I met another drumer in marching band named Chris whose father was a studio musician. Until this time I just listened to the radio and never gave a thought as to who played on the albums. Chris took me to a drum symposium during the first week of school and the drummers playing were Louis Bellson, John Guerin, and Jeff Porcaro...and their bands which included Larry Carlton and Robben Ford. I was changed musically from that moment. Next, Chris took me to the brand Library in Glendale CA which had a great jazz record collection. That's where I first heard Lee Ritenour. Lee had a regular Tuesday evening gig at the Baked Potato jazz club, and after a couple of months I was finally going to go. Unfortunately the week before I went was his last ever Baked Potato gig and it wasn't for another year that I would see him at this performance at the Roxy.
I went with Chris and we sat in this little balcony that isn't there anymore, but you were right on top of the band and could see them perfectly. Technicaly this isn't MY bootleg because Chris brought his big cassette recorder with an external microphone that had an on/off switch and he controlled that switch to turn off the chatter between the songs so he could save as much tape as possible. NOTE: The tape ran out right near the end of Captains Journey and he had to turn the tape over really fast.
The show was billed as Lee Ritenour and Friendship. This is not to be confused with the members of a direct-to-disc recording Lee made a short time earlier under that name, or the band Friendship he would form with these players a year later. This was an all Lee solo music concert. This band was formed to go out on the road, and this was the last night of a tour. The band consisted of Lee on guitar, Ernie Watts on sax, Don Grusin on keyboards, Abe Laboriel on Bass, Alex Acuna on drums, And Steve Foreman on percussion.
The band entered through the audience playing hand percussion instruments and made their way to the stage where Lee came out to join them. This is 46 years ago and I can stil remember how wild the crowd was. Lee was a studio guitar legend and now was their opportunity to see him live. The excitement generated as the announcer said LEE RITENOUR AND FRIENDSHIP was crowned by Lee scratching out the rhythmic chords of Valdez In The Country, and only topped by the howling harmonics he played on the second time thru the verse.
The tape is 46 years old and was recorded in mono with a crappy microphone so it gets a little mushy as the show goes on, but its a record of the evening's performance.
The songs are:
0:00 Valdez In The Country (from a Guitar Player magazine record)
11:30 Margarita (from Captain Fingers)
24:00 Morning Glory (from Captain's Journey)
38:00 What Do You Want (from Captain's Journey)
47:30 Fly By Night (from Captain Fingers)
51:40 Captain's Journey (from said album)
1:05:00 Matchmakers (from Captains Journey

Marilyn Scott Live with Bobby Caldwell
มุมมอง 1.6Kปีที่แล้ว
Singer-songwriter Bobby Caldwell passed away a few days ago (3-14-23) and I wanted to post a little something to honor his memory. In the early to mid 1980s singer Marilyn Scott would play at the Santa Monica club "At My Place" every 3 to 4 months. Her band was always the best musicians in town which generally included her writing partners and founders of the Yellowjackets, Russell Ferrante on ...
Burt Bacharach & Carol Bayer Sager Live Concert October 1981 at the Roxy Theater on the Sunset Strip

In October 1981 Burt Bacharach and his then wife, lyricist, Carol Bayer Sager played a couple nights at the Roxy Theater on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. To this day it remains one of the best concert experiences I have ever had. I have always thought this was a mono recording but upon recent listening I think it is possibly the first bootleg recording made on my stereo Sony TCS310 recording w...

Host Mel Torme introduces some of the greatest jazz pianists playing (and even singing) our most beloved Christmas classics. This comes from a cassette I made from a radio broadcast back in December 1993. John Guerin & Friends at Donte’s Jazz Club I know I wrote that it took place on June 21 1980, but it may actually have been a year earlier. Either way it was an evening of heavyweight musicianship. I remember I went to this show with my friends Kevin and Maria, and when we got to the club early we found that most o...

In December 1981 Greg Mathieson, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Lukather, and Pops Popwell played a 3 night gig at the Baked Potato Jazz Club. I was at one of the shows and brought along my new Sony stereo recording Walkman. A few months later I bumped into a friend who said they used one of the songs in the movie Zapped. I had no idea until February 2021 that they made a recording of the show and release...

I find this instrument fascinating because it's so different from an ordinary instrument. I mean, it seems the piano mostly plays itself and the performer mostly controls percussion and other "sound fx" type sounds. It's basically an acoustic/analogue version of people playing live with loop pedals, drum machines, and sequencers.
