Redefining Flight Combat Games
#acecombat #hawx #topgunmaverick
In 2007 when I first played Ace Combat 6, I wished it could have conveyed the sense of dynamism and excitement that I expected you would experience in the cockpit of a real fighter jet.
In the years that followed its release, two major flight combat games came along which attempted to redefine the genre: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, and Tom Clancy's HAWX.
Their approaches to cranking up the rush of dogfighting couldn't be more different--but both are tremendously entertaining.

Peak Flight Combat game is VTOL VR. Period.
@@joespeed1952 What’s that??
@@brentsacks Imagine DCS or falcon bms but more digestible and you can reach out and touch the controls. its fairly realistic and has a lot of procedures and buttons but theyre simplified a bit. its really good if you really want realism and immersion, and if DCS is just a bit too much to set up or invest time in learning, and you happen to have a VR headset laying around. its not really cinematic like top gun or ace combat though, even if being in the cockpit is really cool. its still shooting at dots and occasionally close dogfighting.
I loved HAWX so much. There's just nothing like it.
I’m not sure if the air combat genre is dying because no games are coming out, or if no games are coming out because the genre is dying. But if they resurrect this franchise, I think it would almost certainly be profitable!!
@@brentsacksoh man with the way Ubisoft is doing rn, I'd say it's probably for the best they're probably gonna made the game online only ala R6 Siege or The Crews, and charge you more egrigious cosmetics for your planes than even AC Infinity was, let's not forget all the collabs that had fuck all to do with the franchise like Arknights
@ well, when you put it like that, I agree with you 😂 🥲
@@brentsacksI wish I was being sarcastic, but one would put it past modern Ubisoft to actually did all the things I've mentioned, and finally took the game away from everyone's uPlay accounts like they did with The Crew 1 last time when the plane licenses expired
@ No, you’re spot on. They would find a way to introduce BS into the formula and ruin it. I talk about this a lot on my channel, but I crave the era of games when they were simpler. More focused. Fewer moving parts. HAWX and AC are perfect examples of that. I shudder to think of all the BS Ubi could introduce to ruin it
i think ac:ah and hawx didnt do too well because of the hand-holdyness. like you had pointed out, it kind of takes control from the player while engaged in a dogfight which is supposed to be the most intense part. Good for a very arcadey feel, but i think ultimately betrays the "sim" aspect-- i use the term loosely. I think it's that simplified sim aspect that ac players enjoy. Realistic enough to kinda sorta feel like a sim if they dont want to sink time into DCS and infinately more approachable than the cliff face of a pvp learning curve that games like war thunder present. i wasnt really a big fan of hawx because of the camera. i like the in-cockpit views, lining fools up in the gunsights, that old bit. But thats just like, my opinion man...
HAWX is interesting because it’s simultaneously *more* hand-holdy with ERS mode but also *less* with assistance-off mode. But yeah I agree, I enjoy the added challenge of realistic driving games, and I think I would enjoy the same added challenge if one of these arcade flight combat series cranked up the realism more.
Ace Combat havent been top dogs in ages, id argue in the current market for air combat simulator games the top dog is DCS, though it feels a lot more simulator-y than AC, a more similar game in the genre is War Thunder but its also a pvp game and feels a little more realistic, though one selling point for War Thunder is the roster, you can play from pre ww2 era biplanes, late ww2 props like the Bf-109 and P-51, to modern jets like Su-34, F-16C and F117 Nighthawk, theres also ground mode where you play tanks too
Both games seem very impressive
Nuclear Option is where it is at, a proper revival of the Simcade genre, dynamic campaign, proper physics and damage models, BVR and WVR combat, strategic weapons, SEAD/DEAD. Warthunder is great for what it is, but it's an MMO, and therefore not worth the time it takes
Honestly this sounds effing sick. I love shooting a hundred missiles per sortie as much as the next guy, but making do with 2-8 missiles in one sortie would make for such an interesting dynamic. Maybe they could have you take control of multiple aircraft per mission to keep it realistic but also still fun for the player
@@brentsacks it's definitely worth picking up if you've got the time. It has a variety of aircraft that keep getting expanded as the game is updated. The last update added for all intents and purposes its own spin on the AC-130
oh hey, a fellow NO enjoyer. yeah, its like a good blend between Ace combat and Project Wingman, and more realistic flight games like VTOL and DCS. Its very sandboxy, which is why i like it. you could also make (or just download from the workshop) some cool missions that lean toward scripted AC missions as well. the combat and flight mechanics are much more in depth too, without being too procedurey like DCS. Dropping nukes will never not be cool either (until that one AI or griefer sacrifices your entire airbase to hit an enemy truck lmao, but thats being weeded out)
Glad to see someone pointing this out. the camera is so important. Project Wingman is one step above in the right direction when it comes to improving the ace combat camera, customizable FOV is great. your camera deatching from the jet when doing off-limiter maneuvers also gives you that "I'M DOING A COOL TRICK LOOKING COOL WHILE DOING IT." I think War Thunder is another example of a good camera setting helping flight feel more enjoyable. Ace Combat 7 the latest, did very little to innovate this aspect from its prior interation.
Yep. I found AC7 a little wanting. I haven’t tried Project Wingman yet but it continues to rack up great endorsements. I should probably get on that.
I think Ace Combat 7 somewhat addressed the 'shooting at faraway dots" issue with things like how the missile range often forces you to get a bit more closer and AI like Mihaly taking you for a wild ride if you decide to stick close to him. Not to mention level design further pushing you with tunnel runs and canyons. However, this experience kinda feels optional and easily missable at times rather than something that the player is drawn in by design like how Malenia in Elden Ring encourages the player to engage with the game's refined combat system and fight more aggressively due to her being easy to hitstun and to offset her healing (While also having attacks like her infamous waterfowl dance to prevent easier cheese by aggressive stunlock). Also, did you try Top Gun: Hard Lock? Kinda like a watered down copy of Assault Horizon but has its moments and a nice soundtrack.
I haven’t tried it, but I should look into it! Reducing missile lock on ranges is such a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it forces encounters to be close up and more interesting. On the other, it makes you feel ineffective and weak. Kind of like how in the original Splinter Cell, they made the pistol horrendously inaccurate because they didn’t want it to become a crutch. But it feels _so_ inaccurate that it makes you wonder why Sam is such a bad marksman or why he’s carrying such a garbage pistol. There’s a fine line between the two extremes, and I think AC7 and SC both landed on the wrong side of it.
Still flying buddy?
Is this a quote from one of the games? 😰
@@brentsacks yep)
I figured 😩
Dumb video is dumb, if you think Ace isnt dynamic then youre an idiot, no wonder your channel isnt succeeding
AC5 triggered my motion sickness really badly. Camera shake when zoomed in is awful
Ugh yeah, it’s definitely not for everybody. Don’t try it in VR!
Ace Combat stopped being top dog with Assault Horizon, Ace Combat 7 just tried to revive the corpse. War Thunder and DCS blow it out of the water and if it wasnt for Japanese game fans, AC would have died a long time ago with Ace Combat 6. Like it or not, once air heads figured out what they saw in most games and movies is nonsense and nothing like actual air combat the arcade feel of Ace Combat, which got even worse with subsequent entries after Ace Combat 5, the competition of the arcade style air combat lost all of it's appeal. Not to mention, with the rise of PC gaming there was more access to the more realistic games. Marketing by War Thunder and content creators did the rest. There is no changing this trend now that War Thunder has reached modern jets. Ace Combat is dead.
Maybe so! I think the audiences who liked Ace Combat games aren’t necessarily the same people who would like the realistic sim games like DCS and War Thunder. But both seem freaking sick to me, just haven’t tried them yet
And like it or not, AC7 sold over 5 million copies worldwide. I like AC because I always like the story writing. I don't like WT or similar PVP games because I don't like PVP and their microtransaction aspects. I don't play DCS because I know I will not enjoy a sim when what I want to do is to blow stuff up. AC is not dead, and it is far from that. And it is precisely because AC7 is sold on PC ("rise of PC gaming") for the very first time, they achieved the all-time sales record in the franchise. Saying arcade-style air combat lost all of its appeal because having more access to more realistic games sounds odd.
More realism doesn’t equal more fun. I enjoy modern fighter stuff more through over-the-top crazy Ace combat. Realistic missile combat is dogshit. Realistic prop planes and gun fighting is *alright*. Ace combat was always right in a sweet spot before the limit of “too arcadey” for me, I started with AC4 and got to use the awesome PS2 HOTAS system with AC5 for many hundreds of hours till it wore out. ASSault Horizon didn’t convince me to finish it. I get what they’re going for with the intensity, fine. They wanted to bring us to the fantasy. My hangup is not realism, it’s control. I do not ever want my plane sliding uncomfortably in a direction I didn’t tell it to just to show me the half-playable cutscene of it whizzing by buildings. It’s “unrealistic”, I mean this in a very specific sense. It’s not because you’re pulling too many G’s, or operating way outside of the “real” specs of the plane or whatever, it’s because the movement is **unintuitive** and jarring. It’s great to exaggerate what these machines can do way beyond realism for the rule of cool. I love that. Black out the sun in a swarm of hyper drones and let me cut through them with a laser, whatever. But I should never be confused by what my plane is doing or feel like I lack agency. There should never be a disconnect from input to action, even if the actions the “character” (plane) can do are “unrealistic”. If I’m not in control there’s no fucking point, just make a movie instead of a video game.
This is an utterly absurd take. More realistic mechanics aren't superior mechanics, they're just more realistic. DCS and AC7 are straight-up not even in competition with each other. Not a soul on this Earth has ever made a mutually exclusive choice between taking two days to learn how to cold start an F-4 in a DCS module or firing 90 AIM-9s at a superweapon in Ace Combat. They're totally different appeals. The original Operation Flashpoint got an Xbox port in 2003, and alongside it there were titles like the original Ghost Recon and early R6 titles. By your bizarre reasoning, that should've been enough to stop titles like Call of Duty from ever gaining a foothold in the market and we'd all be playing OpFlash right now instead.
@ Agreed, more realistic does not equal superior
ever heard of War Thunder? That's the top flight combat game. you do plenty of acrobatics in that one.
Definitely would like to try it someday! I looked into it a few years ago but it seemed like kind of a time commitment
the issue with Assault Horizon is that it looks so exciting but feels frustrating and limiting while playing. nothing quite matches the freedom of a classic AC mission. it's a sandbox that lets you fly however you'd like. while the classic formula works, it can get stale. AC7 i think mostly solves it by making the environment around you exciting (proper clouds, wind, beautiful graphics), an awesome soundtrack and just the right amount of scripting. though i feel like the ultimate future of Ace Combat and this genre is in VR
I definitely know what you mean. The highly scripted and directed nature of AH comes at the expense of player freedom. I am definitely due for a revisit of AC7. I didn’t think it improved on 6 in the gameplay department, and I didn’t think it learned any lessons from AH either. But I wonder if I would enjoy it more now than I did three years ago. Definitely curious to try VR. Between Star Wars: Squadrons and Project Wingman, those are two I haven’t played yet but the VR option is intriguing. I don’t have a headset either, but that’s minor details 😅 Wow I said “definitely” 3 times 😂 where’s my editor?

Wait... then how it measured against AC7? Did they learn from it?
AC7 was pretty much a return to formula in a way I found fairly disappointing

I was curious about formalism, and how to even approach that style after learning about Speed Racer 2008 and Kung Fu Hustle. I think that should be used more in anime and cartoon adaptations than pushing realism onto zany series like Dragon Ball
@@JakeSmith-mq5dc Would you say that the Dragon Ball adaptation has elements of realism?! I haven’t seen it 😳
@@brentsacks Don't recommend watching it. I haven't seen it in a while, but the opening sparring session kind of had Kung Fu Hustle vibes before Stephen Chow left from creative differences. Then it became a generic Hollywood action movie. In other words, I'd say it had a little formalism in some action sequences (not the climax unfortunately).
