Tricky Pixie (Alexander James Adams, Betsy Tinney, and SJ Tucker) perform Creature of the Wood and Daughter of the Glade at Archon in St. Louis 20151002. All rights are held by their respective owners. Thank you to the band for their VERY kind permission to let you see this!
This is probably my favorite version, and I've listened to quite a few, so that's a compliment. They do such a good job with the spooky part. Also, it doesn't gloss over Janet actually rescuing Tam Lin as much as most of them do (basically "Janet did all that she was told", which is boring). Also, the description at the beginning, lol.
Love it!
I REALLY miss Tricky Pixie concerts. Such quality magic!
I had just hosted them in Cape Girardeau the night before. My mother fell in love with the group that night. I was in the audience in this video taken the next day at Archon.. What a beautiful group!
This is a great interpretation of the song !
I have heard many of the versions of this ballad, and I love them all. They are all so different. The poetry is remarkable. It is one of the great magic ballads. Others are "The 2 Magicians", Sung by Tony barrand & Jon Roberts, "Willie's Fatal Ride" sung by Ray Fisher,
I love there music!
I am a daughter of the glade never tamed to mortal ken. goat feet and striking yellow gaze the sultry voice of the summer maze I am the beast beneath fair skin with but a song your love I'll win As you would a satyr when he roams, Beware the faun who hunts alone, a prowling spirit on her own all spice and fire to the bone! a thirsty chalice for thy blade! Come now, to the daughter of the glade! In Song and Storm I came to life By Hoof and Horn I came to be I need no pipes to cast my spell I am the tale no heroes tell! hie to the woods, boy, you'll be glad you stayed. Come now to the daughter of the glade! Satyr, when thy mortal lovers fade, I will take you, unafraid! and here's your perfect chance to try a lover bold and as sweet as I Dark and warm as winter wine! You've never tasted fruits as fine! I see you waste your golden song on mortal maidens, dusk to dawn Those virgin girls will ne'er be true come taste a love as wild as you! You'll meet your match when you meet my eyes! but I'll allow you your surprise. I am a daughter of the glade, and I will make no man a wife! By Hoof and Horn I came to be; in Song and Storm I came to life! Leave off thy chase! Thy prize is here! and she will love you without fear! I am a daughter of the glade never tamed to mortal ken. goat feet and striking yellow gaze the sultry voice of the summer maze I am the beast beneath fair skin My song is done. Thy love I've won.
The definitive version will always be Sandy Denny with Fairport Convention, but it's great to see current groups keeping this tale alive. Shared it with my college students for Halloween.
Nice!
I love that I know that they're wearing moresca tops
Beautiful woman in thy middle
Fantastic! Loved it!
1:47 "**whispered** Who's this guy?" I love that part
I never noticed that!
If anyone wonders, the definition of kirtle - a long gown or dress worn by women. Mantle - a loose sleeveless cloak or shawl, worn especially by women. I've listened to this song since the 70's and never knew. And Carter Hall? No. Carterhaugh is a wood and farm near the confluence of the Yarrow Water and the Ettrick Water near Selkirk in the Scottish Borders. This real location is the fictional setting for the meeting between Tam Lin and Janet in the ballad "Tam Lin". A haugh is a low-lying meadow by the side of a river.
Love it!
I LOVE this version of the song! Like THIS version! I’ve listened to SJ Tucker’s official cover of this song and.. I don’t know… it’s lacking something. Maybe the bells and the drop of beat when the faerie court rides in were missing , or the intensity and volume of the sound effects, but this video is the best version of the song!!
I assume you've heard Sandy Denny singing this with Fairport? Or Anaïs Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer 's version, without the angry queen!
Yes I listened to a bunch of different versions. Whenever they leave out the faerie Queen I feel like something is missing. Don’t get me wrong, I love the other versions especially the more traditional ones, but I just love this one in particular!
I met Heather several decades ago when my sister Edie was roadie for Phoenyx's Oakland and San Francisco gigs. Whether as Heather or Alexander it's nice to see the performance and hear again the music I remember fondly from those days that are still dear in my heart. And it makes me smile that Alexander ended up taking up my legal last name.
My first exposure to Alexander was the song Tam Lin on a playlist that somebody shared with me, I had never heard or heard of him before. I just loved that velvet butterscotch voice. Didn't learn anything else until much later. Still impressed, though.
"The Ballod of Trying to Rescue Yo Baby Daddy from the Queen of the Faries"
Been listening on repeat for the last hour
Song proper begins at 0:44 . No other version of the ballad moves quite like this one.
I wish there were easily accessible chords for those two songs. Y_Y

He is unfairly attractive.
I get such chills when the faerie court arrives!
Every time.
Definitely brought.the sexy back. That was nicely done
Love these types of vibes !!!. .. I wish Hexenfest wasn't postponed. . . . I found out about the festival because I work at a t-shirt printing company and came across the Hexenfest design. . . Always been interested in witchcraft and Pagan culture. .. Much love goes out to you guys!!!
I wonder what happened to Tam Lin and Janet after this. He just appears out of thin air years after he disappears, and Janet comes out of the woods with him as her baby daddy and they have a wild story about a faery queen
I think they probably spread a story that he was part of Lord Carter's knights, and although everyone knew, no one asked questions for fear of Janet.
Once again, I'm awestruck by the courageous sacrifice that Alexander James Adams made, surrendering the beautiful voice of Heather Alexander so that he could embrace his true identity. He could have been left with a voice like a rusty door hinge as the price of spending the rest of his life with his true name and his true face, but his courage was rewarded with the equally beautiful voice of Alexander James Adams, and a whole new singing career was born. A miracle granted to him by Apollo as a reward for his courage? That is a very reasonable interpretation, it seems to me.
I am a creature of the wood Forsaken in my solitude My song is pleasure and is pain My song can drive a man insane So come with me, my pipes I'll play And we will dance 'till break of day I shall be thy lover I've been alive since time began Not beast, not god, and yet not man I am the music and the dance I am the piper who enchants So loose all ties to mortal kind My pipes shall play within thy mind I shall be thy lover Come unto me my beauteous maid I'll lead thee to the hidden glade Thou shalt be happy and be free When I play, thou wilt dance for me We'll feast on fruit fresh from the vine And I will sample the fruit of thine I shall be thy lover Sweet love I'll make for thee alone And show thee sights before unknown I'll be thy master and thy friend For I'm the gold at rainbow's end I am the beast within all men I am the rhyme past mortal ken I shall be thy lover I've played my pipes before man's dawn Seen maidens ripe, turn pale and wan Taught man the art of song and dance Yet had to part from mortal clans I must return to silent dells No fire burns, and nature dwells So take thy rest within the shade And as the evening hours fade I'll take thee deeper in the glade My cloven hooves through heather wade I'll teach thee things man has forbade Our souls entwined and unafraid I shall be thy lover I am a creature of the wood Forsaken in my solitude My song is pleasure and is pain My song can drive a man insane So come with me, my pipes I'll play And we will dance 'till break of day I shall be thy lover
