Preserving a Vision: The Refresh of Multiple Visions: A Common Bond
Cellphone XR Production by Blaine Gutermuth, 2018
Featuring Exhibition Preparator, Bryan Johnson-French, Photographer Kitty Leaken,
Collections Manager Paulina Smutko and more.
Alexander Girard’s Multiple Visions: A Common Bond at the Museum of International Folk Art
is one of the few remaining examples of his designed environments. In 2018, with support
from the International Folk Art Foundation and donations made through the Museum of New
Mexico Foundation, museum staff and contractors spent a total of 880 man-hours over three months
carefully cleaning, repainting, vacuuming, replacing plexiglass, improving lighting, and digitally
documenting the collection. Their painstaking efforts ensured the preservation of Girard’s
original vision while enhancing audience engagement.
To secure the long-term care of this beloved exhibition, the Girard Legacy Endowment Fund
was launched in 2022, ensuring future generations can continue to experience its wonder.

The similarities to Alpine traditions of Krampus or the French Pere Fouttard are remarkable! A new year festival (the Catholic new year begins at the beginn of Advent and St Nicholas is the first big festival of Advent), going from house to house, complex scary costumes, and the goal of scaring kids into behaving while the parents have a laugh! The English have a similar, if slightly less scary tradition of mumming.

The colcha stitch is a universal stitch. It is practice all over the globe. Colcha is a delightful embroidery but it is not the "birth right" of New Mexico. New Mexico borrowed the stich from other countries. Embroidery ascend all cultures. New Mexico colcha is an Hispanic-American type of embroidery.

How can a "Spanish" from Spain bring a Navajo spindle to New Mexico. It does not make sense

  • @moniquedurham806
    @moniquedurham806 ปีที่แล้ว

There is no proof that Juan de Onate brought the Churro sheep to NM in 1598. As per his contract to the King of Spain, Onate was to bring 3,000 ewes and 1,000 rams. NO MENTION OF CHURRO SHEEP. This information can be found in the Facsimiles published in Accordance with an Agreement between the California Digital Library and Espana Ministerio de Education, Cultura y Deporte Archivo de Las Indias, Sevilla , Spain. This information can be downloaded for free from UC Berkeley, Cibola Project. Authors De Marco, Barbara and Craddock, Jerry R. The title is: Juan de Frias Salazar's Inspection of Juan de Onate's Equipment and Personnel Destined for the Conquest of Nuevo Mexico November 16, 1597- February 2, 1598. It written in Spanish . On pp 158-159, where it says Ovejas and Carneros, one can see the information. The inspection took place in Santa Barbara, Mexico, not far from where Parral, Mexico is located.

FYI, the maker of the dolls that Alexander included in the show are by Marilyn Neuhart, John Neuhart's wife. John (and Marilyn) printed the letterpress broadside announcing the opening of the T&O shop. Unfortunately the newspaper article references the dolls by stating that the came from California without mentioning Marilyn. There is a much bigger story to share about Alexander commissioning Marilyn to make the dolls.
