SLO Creation and You: or, How we learned to stop worrying and love the queue length - Lisa Seelye
RabbitMQ and the services that use it serve as the backdrop to sharing how FreshBooks came up with some of its first service level objectives. Why are you taking this thing we care about? How else can we know if there are connectivity issues to RabbitMQ? How else can we know if the consumer doesn’t have enough capacity? What does queue length tell us - and what doesn’t it tell us? How do we let go of single-metric “something could be wrong” indicators to more direct indications that something IS wrong?
Join and hear the tale in four parts of how we helped service owners let go of RabbitMQ queue length and take a customer-centric approach to curating services’ SLOs, or how we learned to stop worrying and love the queue length.

The Data Behind DevOps: What Does it Take to be a High Performer? - Nicole Forsgren
How do you become a high performing technology organization? Over the past four years, the State of DevOps Report has shown how high-performing IT teams decisively outperform low-performing peers. On Being A Developer Advocate - Jay Gordon
DevOps professionals are required for teams to advocate on behalf of software. Without Developer Advocates, code exists as text in a repository. By spreading the value of good information we can help good practices become part of the DevOps experience.

Learning to Share (Responsibilities) - Karen Bruner and Cads Oakley
All teams in an engineering org have their own defined set of responsibilities, but what about those areas of responsibility that must be shared, particularly security or, especially in smaller companies, on-call rotations? How do we instill a sense of ownership that transcends team boundaries without either letting the ball drop or seeing one team take up the slack for everyone else? We’ll tal...

Infrastructure as Code The Hard Way - Artem Starostenko
The concept of Infrastructure as Code is not new to the world of DevOps. Many who understand it call Infrastructure as Code the fundamental practice of DevOps. Yet, there is still a lot of confusion about Infrastructure as Code. Many don’t understand what it is and how popular tools like Ansible, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes fit into this model. I created a simple Open Source tutorial about In...
Consumption is Fractal: Open Source Sustainability - Noah Kantrowitz
While open-source sustainability has been a common topic in the hallways tracks and dev channels of major projects for years, the Heartbleed vulnerability in 2014 catapulted the topic in to the spotlight. Since then we’ve seen many discussions about how open-source should be supported for the long term, but rarely much action beyond a few token donations and some long Twitter threads. In this t...
You’re so empathetic, you probably know this talk’s not about you. -- Sarah Hagan
We know DevOps culture requires increased collaboration between teams to move faster and be more agile. But what do you do when you’re forced to work with someone who just doesn’t get it, and how do you get to a place where work can happen seamlessly? This talk uses empirical research and practical tips around how to learn more about yourself, understand the perspective of others, and bring emp...
Modern Security with Microservices and the Cloud - Seth Vargo
It’s great that you’ve moved to microservices, but how are you distributing secrets? This talk offers an overview of Vault’s unique approach to secret management by providing secrets as a service for services (and humans), that is highly scalable and easily customizable to fit any environment. This talk has two primary goals: Identify the new security challenges associated with using cloud tech...
Can you call it a container when it has Windows? - Jennelle Crothers
DevOps is about improving the processes around all your workloads, so you can’t be blamed for wanting to consider using containers to speed up testing and deployment. Containers may be new to Windows workloads overall, but strides are being made with each release. What can you put in a Windows container and can you deploy those containers as easily as all the others? Take a quick tour of what w...
Dynamic Non-events - Adrian Cockcroft
As more automation rolls out and new software applications become a more critical part of our lives, the impact of failures increases. Safety is a critical attribute and one of the definitions of a safe system is that it has dynamic non-events. Whatever happens to it, it still works. I will discuss the new view of safety, as the ability to build systems that maintain a margin, and how to think ...
No-Frills Observability for the No-Nonsense Engineer - Eben Freeman
There's no one-size-fits-all strategy for production observability, just like there's no single correct production architecture, or database schema. In this talk, we'll show how you can incrementally develop a structured logging and instrumentation API that works for your organization, and helps you solve the problems that you care about. Using extensive code examples, we'll talk about strategi...
Hackers would like you to put in long hours -- Ryan Prior
When we plan our agile sprints and staff our teams, do we leave time to operate safely? We know from rigorous data collection that long work hours contribute to a dramatically increased hazard rate, yet we work in a field that often glorifies and rewards all night server room firefights and epic code-crushing death marches. We might be working too hard to be secure. What if we could save money,...

Good talk, got Quay but did not pronounce Ubuntu correctly. I often hear people say Ubantoo instead of o͝oˈbo͝onto͞o.
