The McGurk Effect (Short Demo File)
มุมมอง 3422 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a short demonstration file showing the McGurk effect. If you're not familiar, first listen to the video with your eyes closed, then listen while watching. If you hear two different things, you're not crazy, just human and experiencing the McGurk Effect (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McGurk_effect). An Introduction to Computer Audio for Linguists
มุมมอง 2383 ปีที่แล้ว
Presented at UCSD's Phonco Discussion group, April 5th 2021, I talk here about audio capture, digitization, sampling, bit depth, codecs, compression, de-noising, and more. (Also, I'm being *very* vague about microphone function, particularly in condensers. Capacitance isn't straightforward to do "on the way" to the main topic!)

As some random Econ student that stepped into LIGN 101 because I had free space in my schedule and liked languages, I'm so glad Professor Styler was chosen this year. While (despite many urgings during lecture) I did not end up swapping majors to Linguistics (if I wasn't done with my degree at that point, I'd be tempted), in 10 weeks the class turned an interest into a fascination and was one of the only classes in Zoom University that I could say I both enjoyed and learned from every single class. Even if you aren't the biggest professor in the biggest department, don't underestimate the effect you can have on students, even those like me. There are many people that have a relationship with Linguistics purely because of your class, whether it becomes the thing we make our living off of or not. P.S. please don't delete those 101 lectures from youtube I rewatch them when I go through withdrawal

Thank you so much, Random Econ Student. These kind words mean the world to me.

for the last few years, i've had the honor of knowing professor styler. he's an amazing teacher, a kind mentor, and a staunch advocate for all linguistics students. i will always remember his first lecture of lign 101, where he described speech as just 'flapping bits of meat around in your head,' and it really blew my mind. what blew my mind even more were the three 10oz ribeyes he pulled out of his schwashbuckler satchel (not refrigerated) and the impressive juggling routine that followed. 'do you understand!?' he shouted to the back of the class, 'do you understand the meat!?' and surprisingly, i did. it spoke to us of vowel nasality. he concluded the lecture by having us watch him eat this raw beef, with surprisingly good technique I might add. 10/10 prof

I met Will Styler in San Diego during finals week. He came out of a bush and joined me and my friends on our walk to mcdonalds. Whilst we were walking to the mcd he was bragging about how he taught LingUA everything they knew. Got a picture with him where he made fun of my copy of Strunk and White. At mcdonalds he took like 10 packs of ketchup. Nice guy. He was pretty drunk.
