Re-evaluate your players on a continuing basis
Sometimes we form an opinion of a player and keep it over time. Players develop and change as well as their mental game. The game changes, it keeps getting faster. Therefore we need to evaluate all players and what they are contributing on a continuing basis. They may not be performing at the level of our opinion or they would help the team in a different position.
Are some players using the portal as an exit strategy
We discuss the possibility that a player who really wants to quit softball, might enter the portal as a way of stop playing without having to say I quit.
When things go wrong there still is the next play
We have all seen it, an error is made fielding a ball or a throw is bad and the fielders become spectators. We have to teach and practice with our players that if something goes wrong their responsibilities change. They need to see what is happening and realize that the initial play is over and that a play is going to be made at a different base and their coverage or backup duties have changed ...
Strategic importance of swapping a run for an out
We have to start at the younger ages to teach players the strategic importance of swapping runs for an out. The coaches use a game from the super regionals to show the importance. They stress that we have to train the players so when it becomes important they are prepared.
It's Summer, things will change
It is summer time or close to it. Your player's and parent's lives are going to change. School won't be dictating a schedule and your players will be involved in additional activities. The family dynamics will change. You may have player's school years ending at different times, What has been the status quo is gone. It is up to you to adapt and embrace what you have and not be frustrated with w...
Remember, play has not stopped until the umpire calls time
This week the coaches discuss the need to teach players not to react to an umpires call and forget about what is going on in the game. We have seen it at the highest level, where a player starts protesting what they think is a bad call and the other runners keep on going.
We have to teach and practice base running
The coaches discuss the need for better base running decisions. Even at the collegiate level there are too many mistakes being made. We have to drill the players until they understand the game situation and the do's and don't's.
Execute the skill, then reflect on the results
When learning/practicing skills there needs to be a reflection pause between reps for the athlete to evaluate what was right and what was wrong. If we just speed through reps, improving the skill takes more time.
Why communication is more critical for softball than baseball
This week we help coaches whose primary experience is in the baseball world understand the difference between communication required in softball as opposed to baseball.
Basic skills have to come first
We have all seen it, players cannot execute the very basics of playing catch but they are practicing run downs, relays, etc. No matter what level you coach at, but especially those with inexperienced players, you have to be able to throw and catch. It may be boring, you might have to divide your players into groups but you have to work on throwing and catching until the players are competent, b...
Practice with the same effort as in the game
We see this too often. In a game we are hitting with 100% effort, but in our training we don't practice at 100%. It doesn't make since to practice at a different level of effort than how we want to perform in a game. Make adjustments.
It is our responsibility to help athletes from hurting themselves
Our game has many different ways that a player can injure themselves. As coaches we can't prevent the freak accidents. Even professional athletes get hurt and they have expert coaching staffs. But we can be aware enough to help our players do things correctly and understand any current issues they have that must be taken into consideration with our plans.
Defensive Ready Steps
Newton's first law of motion states that “an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion". This applies to softball and the coaches discuss how players should be moving into a ready state instead of reacting from a stationary position.
Has new equipment changed the game?
The coaches discuss the impact of equipment on the game of softball. Their decades of experience give them a unique perspective to the changes.

Great video! Consider what happened in the second inning of Game 4 of the 2023 World Series. The Rangers scored first on a wild pitch. What was the catcher doing? Did not prevent the run from scoring.

Why would your goal be for the ball to hit chest instead of catching it?

So what is expected? We supposed to step on their toes and squeeze our way past them in the dugout to get on field? How would this be done if the only entrant to the field is through the dugout? Do you have keys to the centerfield gate where the 4wheeler comes in to drag? Do the girls hop the fence onto the field? This is a great idea in theory. Applying it in principal is impossible unless you’re playing on an open field. Out here 90% of the fields are locked with a wrap around fence. They lick them better than fort knox. I really wish we could do this. Impractical if your only entrance is through the dugout.

Always enjoy listening to you guys chat, thanks. My highschool sophomore daughter and I are second year into coaching a 10u team. We've lost and won our share but that hasn't been the measure of our success. I remember executing things we've worked on more than the wins and losses. Planning a practice after a tournament this fall we couldn't think of anything we needed to focus on from the weekend. I can't remember if we won, but I remember how proud I was when planning that practice!
