Townleyhall Summer Solstice Solar Alignment

Townleyhall passage tomb is located just north of the large passage tombs at Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. It is smaller and more basic in design than it's bigger neighbours. On the mornings around the Summer Solstice, Townleyhall is a special place with the passage and chamber aligned with the rising sun.

Tidy
Wow, 15 years later and this is still a fabulous timeless video.
Hi. Planning on seeing this in July. I see a sign on google maps pointing to a gated lane. Do you get through that gate to get to the one in your video? I hate to get all the way there and not know how to access it. Thanks!
I don't recall any problems accessing the dolmen when I visited 2 years ago although I see a notice on Google maps from the owner which would suggest there are current issues : The farmland the Dolmen resides on is still private property. Drones CAN and WILL be shot down and destroyed .....
The true indicator is where the shadow is not where the light is. This is the best by far video of the Cairn T Equinox progression. Thank you so much for doing this right. Thank you.
Nice clean bog. My first paid work as a 10 year old.
Sadly these skills are not taught to the young like before
a man doing a honest days work. dont see much that anymore
People were a lot happier in times gone by much more content
how splendidv ideo-work! catch you later~ mate.
Just so so beautiful. Every part of body reacted to this video and Jillians beautiful music. This really touched my soul. 💚💚💚
Hello, has anyone remarked on how like different stages of plant growth some of the "flower" like symbols look like? Would it be a stretch to suggest that a building that lights up Spring and Autumn would have the gardening instructions on its wall?
thanks for the video, the pipes and the singer
@diHuligan Glad you liked the Townleyhall summery solstice video, send me a message via the Newgrange website , maybe we can meetup for the solstice in June.
DDUUUDDD!!! how thrilled am i , i live down the road from this and used to crawl all over it as a child, now working over at Newgrange and Knowth as you can imagen i never lost my facination for them, I cant believe it never even dawned on me (excuse the pun) to look at this ones alighnment. You are great and should be noted in history :) I am now going to print out a diagram of sunrises and sunsets, and check them all XD
Brilliant video, I visited here this summer and wondered what that would look like, to see the sun move across the symbols- thank you for your concise and fantastic video !
@ardaraith The dark square is the shadow of a notice plaque that was on the railing at the entrance to the chamber. Thankfully the notice plaque has since been removed, so the illumination on the backstone no longer has the dark square.
What is making the dark square in the lower left of the light?
It was a notice plaque at the gate which has since been moved.
……. Thank you, knowthyt, for this upload. Thank YOU, young Magus, for the heads-up it's here. When I visitted Newgrange I wish I'd've known about Loughcrew as well. Incredible structures. Funnily enough, 'we' were supposedly wearing animal skins & living in primitive structures when these enigmatic observatories were tracking the movement of the seasons, the sun, the moon, the stars, & the planets. Who REALLY built them? ~ (•8-o
Are you claiming the wearing of animal skin prevents you from observing the sky, don't be so ridiculous. These people were far more intelligent than you may believe.
I think of a cairn as a dome, stone or wood. Newgrange is stone covered with a lawn put on top isn't it? I somehow doubt it had a lawn on it in its hay day, but again we do not know. There may be a surprise there. For all way know there may have been hydroponic gardens all around like the hanging gardens of Babylon. Nice thought, but pure fiction at this stage :-)
I thought about using the term "cairn" instead of "tomb", but that might bring more confusion because a cairn is normally a stone covered site.
I suppose I am cautious and just use the word "cairn" to leave it open for visitors to create their own story from their feelings along with what they may have read that they could connect to. I once used the word "temple" but thought that was going too far, though our vision of "temple" today is very different to the time of the ancient word "teampall", just as "city" today is very different to its ancient word "cille", and in the USA a city does not even relate to a sacred place
I share your view on the "Tomb" tag. Archaeologists classified Newgrange as a passage tomb, however Newgrange is now recognised to be much more than a passage tomb. Ancient Temple is a more fitting classification, a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance, much as present day cathedrals are places of prestige and worship where dignitaries may be laid to rest.
Good to provide a review trailer for the DVD here, nice production. I always have a personal conflict with the word "tombs" being used with these ancient monuments. Eventually they were used as tombs, I suspect because of convenience, but were they originally built for that? . Hard to believe so much living time was dedicated and used up by so many people to prepare a structure for dying. Do we spend a huge chunk of our time on earth today preparing for our passing? There's much more here.
Molto bello spettacolare
Grüße aus der Oberlausitz!
I agree, 4stinkydogs100, about the singer! You sound like you're a pro at music, and I'm glad that some one agrees with me. I LOVE the pics! Ireland is really a magical place!
Yeah! Seriously, the singer SUCKS!
Michaels your videos allow us to touch the lives of our ancestors and their world for just a few minutes however far away we maybe from the sacred sites of our forebears. Thank you :)
top ratings for this video! :)
i would like to change this from newgrange to Loughcrew got to excited when i wrote lol... both of them are worth a honest look at !!! very good sites !!! i'm new at this stuff so help me if i say the right thing people !!!
new grange is awesome.. i dont know how to do it justice by reveiwing it.. thank you to my friend micheal for your help
My guess is that this is how major seasonal markets were coordinated. Everyone knew when the equinox was coming but this avoided confusion about when trading should open etc. Like today artistic and religious aspects of the gathering were included but the market needed tight co-ordination to minimize conflicts.
