@GilesCuckow I am not trying to compare my cars to a Formula 1 race car, but do you notice any spikes on their tyres?? There is a reason 😁👍However, you have hit on an interesting mathematical conundrum when calculating friction. The surface area does not affect the friction 🤔 so why do race cars have fat tyres?

Yeah... I really didn't think about that, a formula one car with treaded tyres would shake itself to death, I suppose you are making miniature scale models of a race design. I had a dream of this last night strangely if a tank track design which could capture the original burst of energy into weight on the tracks which could give longer momentum at a lower speed, but that's not your aim I'm assuming. Is your main goal to get the most amount of speed and power for a short duration in the most efficient way?

I am sure it would go further, I only tested it with two rubber bands and there were 4 on there from whoever did the original build, however I found it too awkward to get my fingers in there to attach the bands. Obviously designed for smaller hands 😁😁

It is quicker and cheaper to use a strip cut from a rubber glove or a balloon, but obviously I have a 3D printer and a spool of TPU so I had to give it a try 😁😁 Mk 2 is a little thicker so it grips the CD better. I expect it will probably lose it's elasticity over time.

@Putarubberbandonit that's an interesting point. I don't think I've ever seen anyone test the elasticity of TPU over time. I just printed stuff with it, and they sit on a shelf. Lol

If your printer settings are right, you shouldn't have any problems.

I am sure I could put more turns on the motor, but we were on holiday and there would be no chance of replacing the rubber if it snapped. If the weather settle down again, I will give it another go, maybe lubricate the motor first so I can push it a bit further.

I think this one is simply too short for a decent length of rubber motor. I have built other similar kits but they were significantly longer and worked relatively well. Not very effective. It needs more power than a normal round wheel and has less grip, so it is a recipe for disaster.

When I looked back at the original video, it was really poor focus, so I thought a second viewing was justified. A very simple build 😊👍 but very light weight so outdoors the wind would catch it and blow it off course 💨💨

I expect with more power it would have been more interesting, but that was enough to show there is a problem. Like I was saying in the previous comment, it's the fact the water is trapped at the back of the wheel that is causing the problem. The wheel is trying to lift the water at that point. 👍

I know exactly what I am doing. I am passing the remaining years of my life on a minimal income, keeping myself occupied rather than vegitating.

That was almost all the attempts, just a couple that went straight off camera were edited out. Winding it up took a fair bit of time as it was a bit awkward. A bigger cup would have been easier.

I can't really help you there. I use scrap items from around the house, or stuff I have collected. The main item you need here is a threaded bar and a matching wingnut. I have no idea where in the world you may be, so I can only suggest checking out a hardware store to see what you can find. That is what I did when I made the car back in 2018 and I know that particular hardware store went out of business a year or so back. The back wheels are CDs or DVDs. The front wheels are off a toy car. The body of the car could be made from thick cardboard. EDIT. Yes, I was in Poundland today. They certainly have changed the range of items they are selling. Our local is just going through a reorganisation of the layout. All the stock seems mixed up on the wrong shelves with very little logic. I expect it will settle down eventually.

It has to be done, my house is so full of junk and it slowly creeps into the next room, and then another room. Every room has some of my junk in it, and the loft, and the garage, and the shed. If I start shifting some of it now, it may save the cost of a rubbish skip when I have gone 😁😁😂😂

Time is passing very quickly now. About 20 years ago my generation of the family realised that all our family get-togethers were at funerals for the older members of the extended family so we started an annual get-together to try to break that link. (That is the holiday in Hope Cove, we have had as many as 60 family members attend). It will soon be time for our children to recognise that is what happens each generation. It's not a big deal, it's a fact of life. Getting back to the amount of junk I have, it is well out of hand. Regardless of my age, it still needs to be sorted out. If we wanted to sell the house and downsize, it would still need to be cleared and chucking a few rubber band powered cars in the bin really does not make any impact@@spencer963

@@Putarubberbandonit I'm feeling that fact of life at 33, just 10 years ago I felt mostly invincible. Time is the grand equalizer, I probably won't live long, but it'll be my own self to blame I'm sure. Probably outta do it right, find a solid woman, produce well raised offspring, but it's hard to want to do that in the current climate. Prices spiking across all sectors of life, increased hostility towards folk like us, weird world we're in I think?
