Congratulations! 🥰🥳 Many booktube years ahead with great books! I truly respect you and your work here, so glad I discovered you a few months ago. Thank you for the great content! Also for sharing with us the story of the wonderful bookish moment with your son! I hope I will be here also at your third booktube anniversary! 🤗
A very happy u tube birthday, really enjoy all your videos
Thank you, that’s very kind !
Thank you for the wonderful insights. Just because I'm on a huge Shakespeare kick what is your favorite work by the Bard?
I must say, this is very much influenced by the performances I have seen…so, blasphemy incoming, but I have the best memories of Much Ado About Nothing.
@cafeaulivre That's probably my number 3 and my favoriteof his comedies... together in Blasphemy then.
That will be the channel’s new tagline: Together in Blasphemy 🤣
@@cafeaulivre I approve.
So enjoyable! It was good getting to know more about your reading.
Thank you for watching ☺️ and if you ever have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
I have read several of his books several times, never finished Salem's Lot or IT. I did enjoy the TV movies of both and remake of IT. My favorite short story is Word Processor of the Gods. This story smacks of Twilight Zone vibes.
O so many good books and I love Needful Things and the movie too.I don't have number 1 so many are my favorites I can't label them.
Note to self : read some RF Kuang Question : have you any published works and if so what is your pen name ? Another question : do you have a favourite fantasy/sci fi series? With you on the mild spice also I’m not jealous at all that you went on the orient espresso sporting a very dapper shirt reading and living your best Agatha Christie life 😂❤
Answer: I do, both prose as poetry, but none of it is translated, it’s all in Dutch. And I wouldn’t call it very professional either 🤭 Another answer: I have many, in fact. I am a big fan of both Joe Abercrombie and Terry Pratchett. I grew up with the Belgarion Chronicles and read those books until they fell apart,… so many examples And I could tell you where we went on our honeymoon, but that might make you even more envious 🤭
@@cafeaulivre now I feel like I might be at a loss not being able to speak Dutch 😭 I love Terry Pratchett and I’ve heard Joe Abercrombie but I’ve never read any 🤔 Joe Abercrombie and robin hobb get mentioned quite a lot. Just looked up the belgariad and based on the covers alone and the titles of the books … they look amazing 😂 And also now you must tell me where you went on your honeymoon! Absolutely 💯😂
The Antarctic 🤭😉
@@cafeaulivre lies ! 🤩😂
@@cafeaulivre has to be the Pera palace. Guess where I went on mine ? 😂
As someone who's been watching you for a long time, I've always admired how you stay true to your style . How do you feel about the trend of book-to-film adaptations? Are there any you think did justice to the original book?
Thank you and that’s a difficult one, because last books and film are two totally different mediums that try to tell the same story. In most cases, I will always prefer the book, mostly because of the pacing (you can spend days, weeks with a book) and the fact it leaves details open to your own imagination. Some films do a decent job though…I liked the Tom Hanks adaptation of A Man Called Ove, I liked the classic The Godfather, I even didn’t really mind (blasphemy incoming 😋) the LotR films….but I’ll always prefer the books, I think
For being a good sport and answering my basic random question, I'll ask something a bit more on topic (books and writing). Do you have difficulty naming characters when writing? If the setting is in an English speaking country, I suppose pulling names out of a hat is OK. But if you're creating a fantasy, you should be more creative. Also, I write stories set in my country and there is a phenomenon here where children these days are given western names (European, Biblical), but if I write a story set in the past I need to be careful that my character names fit the place. I mean there is a character named "America Singer" in a book series called 'The Selection' by Kiera Cass. 🙄
It’s a two-step process with me…I tend to do the worldbuilding first: what kind of society is this? In which landscape do they live? How does their daily lives look like? From there, I think about the language they speak: is it flowery, poetical, like they would speak at court, or is it something short, practical, that hunters might use to coordinate hunting parties? From there, I start thinking of names for the characters: a hunter might have a name that’s short, two syllables at most… if it’s a male name, letters like o’s and u’s are more suited…for a female character, maybe a’s. So using that train of thought: Guruk and Tara the hunters are born.
You are my favorite Booktuber, and I am always excited to see a new video. Happy Birthday! If you could recommend one book simply for the beauty of language, which would you choose?
I havn’t read the English edition, but I’m currently reading a French book ‘Son Odeur Apres La Pluie’ (His Smell After The Rain) by Cedric Sapin-Defour and it is one of the most beautiful books, language-wise, I’ve read in a long time. If you’re a dog-lover, you will cry though.
Thank you for joining me on this crazy TH-cam journey! If you have any more questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below and I'll be happy to answer them!
My top 10 is 1. It 2. Pet Semetery 3. Needful Things 3. The Shinng 5. The Green Mile 6. The Institute 7. Cujo 8. Salems Lot 9. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon 10. Desperation I tried to get into The Stand but i cant finish it for some reason.
I guess The Stand is one of those books that is or isn’t for you, and that’s okay, He has written enough to choose from 😄
I loved Midnight Library and The Master and Margarita ❤ Not a fan of Piranesi.
That’s okay, sometimes a book isn’t for you.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!!
Thank you for watching!
They Came to Baghdad would be on my list. Victoria Jones is such a great character. Has all the clever trappings of great AC with more action than most (I'm told).
AC isn’t normally known for being ‘action-packed’, that’s true.
I enjoyed "The Midnight Library". My favs are the "Chocolat" series by Joanne Harris (4 books)
I don’t think I know that series, thanks for the recommendation, I’ll definitely look into it 👍
I think you should have mentioned the book Revival by Stephen King. It is a stellar book of Cosmic Horror, which very much shook me to my very core and gave me a few sleepless nights. IMO it is King’s best and an excellent foray into modern Lovecraft and modern Cosmic Horror
Thanks for saying who would and would not like these books.
It’s not because I love a certain book, others will too. It’s not about being wrong or right, but about getting the right books in front of the right audience. That’s what I try to do at least ☺️ so thank you for watching
I'm at page 333 right now and it's the best thing I've read in my life
Enjoy your reading!
@@cafeaulivre I'm REALLY enjoying it, since I started my journey from Carrie until I get to You Like It Darker 🤣
Murder of roger ackroyd?
Mine would have to be a split between specifically The Angel's Game by Zafón and The Other City by Michal Ajvaz.
Havn’t read those myself yet, I’ll look into them! Thanks for the recommendation!
Midnight's children, the Moor's last sigh and One hundred years of solitude are the best work in magical realism, Period.
Piranesi enchanted me from beginning to end. One of those books I'm sorry I can't ever read for the first time again.
Absolutely, Piranesi is such a wonderful experience, absolutely love it to bits 😋
You mentioned a book I loved (Piranesi), a book I hated (The Midnight Library), a book I plan on reading soon (The Master and Margarita), and a new book for my tbr (Remarkably Bright Creatures). Now I need to check out your earlier video on magic realism. Thanks!
And why did you hate the Midnight Library? See, I knew it was going to divide people 😋
Although I appreciate Matt Haig highlighting mental health issues, I found his approach superficial and misguided. There was no subtlety or nuance, or seeming awareness of the many ways people get to a place of seriously considering suicide. And I didn’t like his writing style either.
There would be no A hundred years of solitude without Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo. That book is just on another level.
Very true, Marquez even claimed he could recite it (don’t know if he actually could though)
May I suggest The Life Of Pi by Yann Martel. If found it, and the movie based on it, very well done.
I have read The Life of Pi, strangely enough, I have actually never seen the movie.
Mixed feelings about some of these! One Hundred Years of Solitude is probably my favourite book, and I loved Master and Margarita, but I really didn’t like House of the Spirits where for me the magical realism felt forced and didn’t work at all. And I must read Piranesi.
Yes, do give Piranesi a try! ☺️
My favorite magical realism novel is Three apples fell from the sky by Narine Abgaryan. I also liked Simon by the same Armenian writer.
The Midnight Library is overhyped in my opinion. I loved The Humans by Haig. 📖🥰
Wonderful novel One hundred years of solitude, with all the repetitive names. 😄 I also liked Of love and other demons by Garcia Marquez. Did you read The Autumn of the Patriarch?
Yes, beautiful but sad, such loneliness
@@cafeaulivre Good to know! I will read it too!🥰
Haruki Murakami
I just finished The Master and Margarita, and I am still thinking about it… I already read 6 of the 8 mentioned in your list, and now I want to read the other two…
Which two are left? 😋
The last two! The one about the octopus 😂 and Weyward… The devoured the first 6, so I will definitely check these two!
Enjoy your reading!
Piranesi is one of my all time favorite books. You are right, it's too bad you cannot go back and read it again for the first time. Although, I am 78 years old--maybe soon I will forget what it was about and be able to enjoy it again.
Every cloud has a silver lining 😋
The Midnight Library😥😢 So Good!
Would you want to read all of the alternate versions of your life? I don’t think I would actually 😬
Oh no, just a few 😆😊@@cafeaulivre
The term "magical realism" has always given me acid indigestion. If "Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Piranesi" are magic realism then at least I found those interesting. Bulgakov's life story is more interesting to me than his writing 👍
Like water for chocolate is my favorite one. there's a movie and hbo will release a series next month
I’ll definitely have to check that one out, several people have recommended it already. Thanks 🤩
@@cafeaulivre yes, you must!
I LOVED Piranesi!! I also really like The Night Circus, I think that’s magical realism as well. And ofcourse Carlos Ruiz Zafon, my eternal love. Weyward and Remarkably Bright Creatures are definitely still on my tbr!
I think I really need to read The Night Circus, so many have recommended that one already
Master and Margarita is wonderfully absurd, engaging, and laugh out loud funny. Maybe I need to try 100 years of solitude again.
Master & Margarita is a truly unique piece of Russian Literature…so different from the 19th century classics as well
In 2021 I read The Murmur of Bees by Sonia Segovia . It was a beautiful family drama with magical elements. I would recommend it. I'm about to start The Master and Margarita.
You’re in for a wild ride with Master & Margarita. Enjoy! ☺️
I love After The Funeral, it's definitely a top 10 Christie for me 😊
Just to let everyone know who hadnt seen it posted a few days ago there's a Q&A question post in the Community tab if anyone wants to ask a question for the upcoming 2nd anniversary Q&A special.
Thanks 🤩 I’ll post a reminder this week and the Q&A vid will be for next week
You should read Like water for chocolate.
Don’t know that one, do you know who wrote it?
@@cafeaulivre Laura Esquivel
@@cafeaulivre by Laura Esquivel, she's a Mexican writer.
Thank you 🤩
I'm listening to Coraline by Neil Gaiman on Libby, read by the author. I thought it was perfect for October. I'm enjoying it very much.
That’s possibly the ideal book for October, I agree 😊
100 years of solitude and house of the spirits were really good books.
I don’t see The House of Spirits recommended often though
@@cafeaulivre Agreed but like you said it's dense and ties into Chilean politics.
One of my favorite novels (top three) is Little, Big by John Crowley, which is magical realism (though tipping a bit more toward the fantasy side). It's been compared to 100 Years of Solitude for its multi-generational sweep. The language is beautiful.
I’ve heard of it, but havn’t read it yet. It’s faeries, if I’m not mistaken?
@@cafeaulivre Yes, but also some other magic. And a beautiful love story at the heart.
I’ll check it out, thanks for the recommendation 🙌
