    I'll be getting into turning soon, already had 2 classes, one of which was pen turning and made my first pen.. came out great. Where can someone get these acrylic blanks with the Armed Forces emblems at? You mentioned a lady who makes them, any link?? Thanks!

    Nicely done, Tyler. I like the details you share and your approach. Your sharing of your skew chisel techniques is very helpful. Been a fan of your work for years, actually when you were making candle sticks & coloring with crayons many years ago, very creative coloring approch.

    Those tool rests with the curves for getting inside a bowl: a bit confused in that the curves on the ones shown were on the left as you face the lathe. How would you get inside a bowl on the headstock side? All the bowl hollowing I’ve seen is on the tail stock end. Am I missing something?

    The bottoms leak because the wood might actually be red oak instead of white. Sometimes it's difficult to tell, even for experienced woodworkers..

    Vacuum chuck. I was thinking spending $600.00 dollars in accessories for my $600.00 used lathe just sucks, then you proved it. I appreciate the introduction. I'm a professional woodworker, but wood turning is a whole new language.

    Came across this video I'm 70 year's old and have been turning 60 years my grandfather got me started at ten years old and I had too promise my grandfather not to say anything to my mother that he was teaching me wood turning my father was cool with it anyway I've always used good quality tools but inexpensive one's and found Benjamin's best have always worked great for me they are good quality and sharpen easily and last for the price of them! I am on my lathe almost every day I enjoy making live and natural edge bowls I can't even begin to tell you how many I've turned over 60 year's as with other turnings i have recently bought carbide tool's and ABSOLUTELY HATE THEM i personally prefer old school! You don't need the expensive stuff believe me I've bought them and there in my useless toolbox some place in my shop !!!🤔

    I understand the parts I started with a mini moved to midi and now i am after a full sized, So in your opinion any full-sized brands are worthy? I have watched to many videos and read to many reviews that I might have lost my ability to choose a new lathe. I have 3k to spend and I am not sure where to spend it, everybody has a love hate with a lathe. to many choices, Nova DVR Laguna to name a few. thanks for the video, Had I not known what I do it was a very good description of a modern lathe. maybe a brand review next time?

    I agree with the below comment. Very clearly explained and some great info from a newbie turner. The question i have, and i think i know the answer, is why do i see the majority of good turners using steel over carbide? Is it because the steel can be sharpened?

    • @quadcitieswoodturners6416
      @quadcitieswoodturners6416 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carbide, while more durable, can never be as sharp as the steel used in modern turning tools. The steel, when used properly and properly sharpened, yields a much smoother finish.

  • @MrPete1x

    Not every lathe comes with a knock out bar. It only takes a few minutes to change chuck jaws. A tray on the bed bars will catch any dropped screws. Screws in a face plate will not waste wood because once a tenon or recess is formed the blank of wood can be reversed and turned into a bowl. A great video, thanks

    I have watched many videos as part of my learning process as an aspiring woodturner. This was easily the most helpful overview I have come across. It really helped me clarify at least the category of lathe I intend to buy. And since it is a less expensive category than I had been leaning towards before, you have probably saved me a lot of money. Thank you!
