What Ecuador Feels Like For Ecuadorians Right Now
The situation in Ecuador right now tough to understand so in this video I talk about what Ecuador feels like for Ecuadorians right now by giving my, as well as other Ecuadorians, perspective on the Tax increase and crime, talk about the power crisis in Ecuador (power outages in Ecuador), and also talk about some situations with infrastructure that have been bothering me for a long time. I also talk about whether or not you should visit Ecuador or live in Ecuador for foreigners looking to come to Ecuador.

*** I'm sorry this is so long however, like yourself, I tend to be long-winded. I hope all who read this find it as informative as I intended. *** I hate to say it, but unless Ecuador really steps up its actions against crime, crime will not end. Unless they cut off the heads of the snakes, the snake never dies. Even Bukele has not accomplished everything people give him credit for. I have watched independent videos by international news sources demonstrating that Bukele has not depleted crime in his country. He has more prisoners than the amount of criminals, and cartel members, than he stated existed before his crackdown. Merchants are still being extorted the same as before. There are still many violent crimes but the media isn't allowed to report the crime. I fear the only solution is to make agreements with the top 2 or 3 cartels and in exchange for them eliminate the violence against politicians and the people along with helping to police the other gangs and mafias and offer them uninterrupted business. However; if they have any members in prison they won't get special privileges. If they break the rules they go to prison as a true prisoner. Is your computer not hooked up to the internet. Does it not have access to Zoom. If you and Lisa have Zoom you can do an interview with her on your computer instead of your phone. As for safety even if a peace agreement is needed then so be it. The Cartels are never going to leave. Once they are here they are here. The best thing, unless you think like me, is to make peace and have an agreement that keeps people safe. Just never go as far as Mexico. Most of their cities, from what I understand, are controlled by cartels and the government allows them to do so. As far as gentrification, I have no problem if gentrification is by the choice of the Ecuadoreans. If expats are gentrifying that I don't agree with. Expats need to stop pricing Ecuadoreans out of their homes. Gringolandia(I think that's the zone in Cuenca) was created for middle-class Ecuadoreans but expats are pricing them out because they pay more than market value. If my health allows me to move to Cuenca I would move to Gringolandia. I also can't support a person leaving their homeland just to make the new homeland the same. I think ex-pats should not try to change laws, traditions, local habits, and lifestyles. If they want to live in their homeland then they need to stay where they lived before they migrated As far as the USA or Canada, earning thousands is actually less than what you make economically speaking. You need, on average, to make around $8,000 or more per month depending on where you live. The average rental is $3,300 a month. Most homes sell on average nationally for $2.5M or more. I'm not saying you can't live cheaper but it isn't easy. My landlord never raised my rent in 10 years and I am so lucky. My son makes almost $100K a year and he has a family of 4 and can barely make ends meet. The saddest part is he only lives 1 1/2 blocks from me. I make ends meet because I have a roommate along with my SSDI. As long as there are violent crimes a person may need a gun for survival. The use of a gun for minor crimes is not reasonable. Having a gun or rifle in your home for personal protection in the event of a home invasion by someone willing to harm you and /or your family. I have never owned a gun but I do plan on getting one once I move to Ecuador because if I don't move to the coast I will be moving into the highlands such as Tena or other country life. Also, living in the Amazon Jungle I would need to protect myself against snakes and other dangerous critters. A gated community is only as safe as its residents. Buying a home in Ecuador requires cash since expats cannot get financing. In exchange for enough cash, anyone can let someone rob or attack you. I would love to get some land in the same area as Jesse. As soon as I find a homestead, I'd want one with access to at least one or two rivers of running water connected to a lake. I don't want my water supply to be cut off by someone. If you feel anxious, you should see a doctor. On another hand tho if you only have that problem when traveling on a bus it is more of a psychological effect. That is an issue that you would have to take relaxers when traveling something like diazepam but not strong enough to knock you out. You might be able to get help from a doctor. I think a person, especially from the USA, leaving Ecuador because of the current crime they should know that no city in Ecuador is as dangerous as many major cities in the USA. I don't feel that expats from the States are being directed at them directly. Like you always say if you don't get involved you for the most part have not much to worry about. As for you traveling to other cities to make videos I think for now you need to just focus on your city. There are other channels for viewers to watch if they want info outside of Portoviejo. Even all the info I ask you for pertains to your city. Manta I ask Don. Salinas I ask Living Loving Abroad who by the way is talking about moving. Cuenca I watch Luis of Ecuador. I'm laughing about someone complaining they paid for a Coke. Unless they had a gun pointed at their head it's their problem. Here in Florida if it's a can it costs $2.75 a can from a machine, $3.50 in-store, or $6.00 from a street vendor. If it's a 16.9 oz bottle you pay $3.50 in machine, $4.50 in-store, and not available from street vendors. If you pay the price then don't whine about it. As for moving out, Ecuador and many South American nations, have multigenerational households. Stay home as long as you can with your parents. Once they are gone you will wish you had spent more time with them when they were here. Unlike the USA where it is not common for a man to live with their parents past the age of 21. I wish I had spent more time with my parents when they were here. You will know when you're ready to move out on your own. Cotacachi is a nice place from what I hear if looking for a cooler climate. I fear that the expats are pricing most Ecuadoreans out. Not all expats from the states pay taxes on income in Ecuador. Retirees with incomes under $25K pay no federal income taxes but in some States they must pay taxes on the SSA pension regardless of income. Everyone pays the IVA in Ecuador. However, as for income taxes, everyone should pay according to income. Sure we spend our money in Ecuador and support a family via the cost of rent or spending our money. However, we pay rent to mostly realtors in the USA but still our rent pays to support their families. So that is just a way of saying they deserve special privileges. I don't pay taxes on my SSDI but if I made more I wouldn't mind paying taxes. My pension in Ecuador would afford me enough to pay income tax in Ecuador. Ecuadoreans should be educated in the economics of the North American Continent. The USA and Canada pay much better because of minimum wage laws. Our minimum wages are based on hourly salaries. Many refer to them as slave labor. An Ecuadorean here made the comment that he feels like a slave because when he gets paid he still has no money to send home to his family and can't save enough to move back. He commented that he was better off in Ecuador and regretted his move. Unless TH-cam changed its policy you can't show the kids without permission from parents. Don't waste your time with trolls. The comment from this person about deleting comments sounds like a troll.

As a US expatriate who's lived in Ecuador for over 10 years, I agree with your assessment 1000%. The lack of a sense of personal responsibility and the inability to admit guilt when they do something wrong is probably the most frustrating. Then there's what we expats refer to as the "Gringo Tax," meaning that we typically pay more for everything there. Because I speak Spanish, I can (and do) negotiate prices for things, and local Ecuadorians tend to respect you more and be willing to negotiate when you can speak the language. Thank you for your openness and honesty regarding this topic.

Thanks for your Vlogs, I really appreciate them. One thing I realize is that unfortunately you are looking at things very often from a very social-romantic point of view without a lot of knowledge on how economy actually works. I don't want to sound patronizing, but people are not kept poor by paying them not more! What is paid is negotiated between the person who is selling, a product or work, and the person who is buying! That is what is the free market! One one is keeping anybody from asking more or paying more. It is just what the market is at this moment. And paying people here what they are being paid in the US is ridiculous because then you will have the same cost of living here in Ecuador like in the US, with is easily $3000-4000 a month. With the self-defense against crime it is very simple! Either the government is doing their job and is defending the people or the people have to defend themselves! Easy!
