Old-time pickin' and singin'.
Country Blues at Dock Boggs’ grave | Freddy Badger & Joseph McCarthy
I had the great privilege today of paying respects and playing a couple songs for Dock Boggs. Listening to his recordings is what inspired me to get my first banjo. I owe a great deal to him and his music; in truth I cannot imagine what my life would look like now if I had not heard his music - that inspiration to pick up a banjo really set the course that my life has taken since.
This is a traditional song originally called "Hustling Gamblers." Dock Boggs learned it from a traveling musician named Homer Crawford, added some lyrics of his own, and called it "Country Blues."
Joseph McCarthy on fiddle, video by Grace Stormont.
"I'm pleased to get a chance even to put on all the old songs I've got. I'd love to put them on so that when I'm gone why the young people they can have them in memory of me."

Happy Independence Day! On the 4th of July I often remember a quote from Edward Abbey: "A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government." Today we commemorate that our forefathers of the 18th century agreed with that sentiment and acted upon it.

Awesome tune. You did it well Freddy!
One of the best versions I ever heard in my life of Sadie is Freddy’s version
@@TheBluesmanBlue Thank you, glad you like it!
That's good playing! This is what America is!
@@wfr1108 Thank you! 🇺🇲
Hup!!
As a left handed person, do you think I'd be better off learning banjo right handed or buying a left handed banjo?
@@TheExperimentalFreak I would probably recommend trying to learn right handed just because right handed banjos are SO much more common. I know that there are left handed banjos, but I'm not sure if I've ever even seen one in person - and I spend a lot of time around banjos. Which is only important because if you learn right handed, you'll be able to play just about any banjo you might encounter; whereas if you learn left handed you'll usually be confined to only playing your own banjo. That said, if you try both and you really dislike how playing right handed feels, maybe give left handed a shot. You want it to be enjoyable for you. Thanks for the interesting question!
@@FreddyBadger Thanks for your valuable advice and awesome music, it's an inspiration! Saving up to buy a banjo as we speak :)
@@TheExperimentalFreak That's one of my favorite things to hear - that I'm inspiring new players. Feel free to ask me questions any time!
This is so awesome! I really want to learn banjo

@@cherylwilliams1352 Thank you, Cheryl! I'm in St. Louis for a while and the people I'm staying with have lots of instruments.
Thanks a lot! Do you pick with your index or middle finger? Cheers!
@@peti8299 I pick mostly with my index, both for clawhammer and two finger style. By the way, I haven't forgotten about making a banjo-only video for Maggie May! I've been quite busy but I'll try to get it done before long.
@@FreddyBadger Thanks for the answer, oh and no hurry! I'll keep busy with this one for now haha. Thanks man.

@@ophionnox1582 Thanks!
@@FreddyBadger don't mention it! I play fingerstyle guitar but this is a whole nother beast. Is that claw hammer style?
@@ophionnox1582 Yes it is! I mostly play the clawhammer and two finger styles, and sometimes three finger.
Amazing picking
@@trentroth6717 Thank you!
🤠
Any advice on incorporating the Boggs-style role into the melody? I'm finding it difficult, although I have the rest nailed! Do you just pause the melody at specific points, do the full 4215 roll, then continue? I'm only an amateur banjo player, so I get quite confused with this stuff! Really excited to learn this one though. Thanks a lot (:
@@MrPolklop That is a difficult thing to describe. I mostly do it between verses, or when there is a somewhat longer break between phrases. Basically, when there is a long enough break between lyrics that it feels appropriate to throw in some kind of filler. So it's mostly about what feels right to you. If you could do the song without it at all that would be fine too, but I find that that roll kind of helps to string the song together. Sorry, that's as much of an answer as I can think up right now. Maybe I'll make a video to further discuss two finger rolls at some point. Thanks for the question!
@@FreddyBadger Thank you for the reply! I believe that I understand. I'm sure it's simply a matter of practice!
Awesome sound!
