    I was just given this kayak by a friend. It is my second kayak but I have only used my 1st one 3 times. I'm definitely what you'd call a novice kayaker. However I did take it out on some very calm water today and I really enjoyed it. Certainly much faster than I thought it was but I can definitely see why. I was told by my friend that gave it to me, that it is a very stable kayak which i didn't find to be true. I definitely need to work on solo re entry and I'm going to buy some of the stuff you and others have mentioned like a bilge and the paddle float and try it in a controlled environment.

    Are the hatches any good? Whats with those dimples on the bottom? Those must affect speed

    • @shootingthehooch7259
      @shootingthehooch7259 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hatches work great. No issues with the bulk heads but I've heard some people added caulk. The dimples are just contours built into the mold that are supposed to help the kayak track better because the bottom of the kayak is somewhat flat. I'm not sure how much of a difference they make.

    • @shootingthehooch7259
      @shootingthehooch7259 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! Sure. If it were me, I would look for one of the following used kayaks. You will have to get them used because they don't make them new anymore. Wilderness Systems Tsunami 160 or 170, Perception Expression 150, Perception Eclipse 17 ft or Wilderness Systems Zephyr 160. Most the zephyr and eclipse kayaks you see will be poly but if you find a fiberglass, know it will be much harder to take care of and maintain but may be a little faster. You should try to see if you can demo these as how they work for you will depend on your body type and size. Its not one size fits all unfortunately. Don't expect them to be faster by leaps and bounds but just by a little. The kayak you have is a great one for my build. I owned one and liked it. If you are in the market for a brand new kayak, you might consider a dagger Stratos or manufacturers outside of dagger, WS and perception. They are all owned by confluence water sports who has really gotten away from touring and expedition kayaks. There are many manufacturers outside of the US who still make great touring kayaks and those are harder to find in the US so you would have to get them new and they are very often much more expensive. Good luck in your search and be safe!

Not a play boat by today's standards, but it's great at surfing and I actually was able to do pirouettes with it by the time I got out of whitewater kayaking (after two back surgeries...). It was a joy to paddle, so light and fast due to its length, contrary to the Perception 3D I had, which was akin to paddling a bathtub. 🙂

      Not at all. I was using a fuji film xp90 and a selfie stick. You have to make sure the camera is one with a female connector. Most have them and most the selfie sticks have the male adaptor. Its just a simple plastic screw. If not, you might have to buy a adaptor. For some of my other videos (whitewater ones) I've used a gopro knock off called a crosstour which you can find on amazon. Between the two the crosstour is cheaper and comes with a water proof case but the microphone is not good, especially when it is in the waterproof case. Keep rocking the Eclipse. I'm in a tempest or expression now but the eclipse was probably the coolest kayak I've owned.

    • @shootingthehooch7259
      @shootingthehooch7259 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. I don't think you need the tempest by any means. I think you would notice a big difference between the Tsunami 140 and the tempest but it also depends on your weight and balance as is always the case with these types of kayaks. If you are heavy, it might not work for you. I wouldn't limit yourself the the tempest, while it is a great kayak, I just sold mine. It really came down to comfort. It was a tight fit for me and getting back in it in deep water was so much more work than with other kayaks. The two kayaks I still own are the expression 150 and zephyr 160. Both are more comfortable for me and nearly as fast as the tempest. Neither are made any more for some reason. If you like your Tsunami, you might also consider the Tsunami 165 and 175. Its always advisable to demo first and by used when you can. Good luck.

I would think they would work ok in the eclipse but I remember it being a little shallower so it might be best to try the smaller size sweet cheeks first. Because the seat isn't padded, the Velcro stickies should adhere just fine.

    I have the 1997 fiberglass version of this with rudder, then just named the Sea Lion, later renamed the Eclipse. Still one of my favorite kayaks. I've upgraded the seat for more comfort and can easily paddle it for hours. While not the latest or greatest still a relatively fast kayak and quite stable even in rougher big swell waters with a 22.5" beam. Mine was made in Canada and other than years of scratches and scuffs has held up well. Bulkheads are still sealed and water tight, hatch covers fit snug. Tracks well with the rigid fiberglass hull and I rarely use the rudder. With a 17'2" length it doesn't exactly turn on a dime but excels in longer distance open water touring, which I bought it for. I have other much newer kayaks but I'll be keeping my Sea Lion until I can't pull a paddle. Despite its age, still a great all around touring sea kayak which I plan to enjoy for many more years. Many positive reviews on this model on paddling.com.

    I have had a pirouette Sports S for decades ( ex slalom paddler) . Its great for the rivers with long pools. I don't use it for creeking any more as there are better boats now. Mine has a "Bumfortable" foam seat that clicks into those holes on the side of the seat so very comfortable. Has a lower deck than the modern boats, which can be a bit uncomfortable if your not used to it. Easy to put your knees up in the centre for a change in position on the pools. I sit on the back deck with feet in cockpit & paddle it like a ski on the flat, for a change in position on long trips. They are fast, super snappy in & out of eddies & for fast ferries. Easiest boat to roll. Probably done more white water miles in this kayak than anything else. Have been thinking of upgrading to a lighter, modern long boat, but it is soo hard to sell this one :)

      The skirt was a half skirt I purchased from walmart. It no longer appears to be available on their website. I never took this kayak on the coast, but I don't think it would perform well in rough waters or ocean waves.

    That skeg retract system would annnoy the hell out of me. Such a cheap afterthought. I'm leaning more towards (or should I say 'edging') the riot edge as their retract system is a ratchet slider. It also has a much smaller back rest as standard. And it's also £300 cheaper

      Based on your height and weight, you would probably be much better off on the 170. Even the 170 isn't roomy though.

    I just got this kayak and I love it. Any idea how I can mount a holder for my paddle so it doesn't fall into the water when I'm fishing? Thanks!

    • @shootingthehooch7259
      @shootingthehooch7259 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it were me, would stick the paddle in the deck rigging. There is actually a recess behind you for this purpose but it make the paddle hard to reach so it doesn't work. Use the front! It can get in the way but the fewer holes you drill in your boat the better. There are plenty of options for mount on products. I would make sure you get something that mounts with two to three screws. I would not get one that requires a large hole be cut into the deck. Mount on products can be poorly designed and the paddle often falls out. That's why I prefer the deck rigging. www.amazon.com/s?k=kayak+paddle+holder&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

    Hi, new to kayaking and just bought the same kayak on ebay (2nd hand) what was the skirt type you mentioned in the vid and what's the gear on the deck? I see a Bilge Pump but not sure what the other stuff is.. Thanks

    • @shootingthehooch7259
      @shootingthehooch7259 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a camel back water pouch and bilge pump on the deck in the beginning. The skirt was a Seals Tropical Tour Sprayskirt. Most splash skirts may work. They are just designed to protect from splashing so are not water tight and are loose fitting for the high seat back.
