    This is my favorite fiction novel so far this year. (It’s now Feb 5th, and this is my 7th book of the year.) Tova is quite an interesting no-nonsense character. But Cameron is interesting too, as the one with the most development and growth arc. It’s good to see someone mature and start taking responsibility. Through the octopus Marcellus, we are privy to the dramatic irony of knowing what the protagonists don’t know. I found it quite suspenseful, especially as the smart octopus tried to give them clues. Really original.

      I enjoyed the book, but I think the title is misleading (authors don't usually get any say in the name of their books). It is much more of a look at how deregulation and privatization of the 1980s-2010s led to efficient but vulnerable supply chains, which became noticeable during the pandemic, but to say the world ran out of EVERYTHING is absurd.

    One funny thing about Small Gods -- although Pratchett wrote it as a critique of religion and religious belief, he said that numerous religious people would come up to him to thank him for writing such a wonderful praise of religion! Many people just see what they want to see.

    • @gearaldbecker6015
      @gearaldbecker6015 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's one of my favorite things about it. It's not anti- religion, it's anti- hypocritical religion. Brutha becomes a reformer who rebuilds Omnianism into a respected institution (though slightly weird by most Discworlders' standards). And there's plenty of criticism for other kinds of institutions, including the Ephebian ones based on classical Greek culture that we all admire so much. It really boils down to "be better."

    • @SpencerReadsEverything
      @SpencerReadsEverything 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I started reading Pratchett all the way back in the '80s but Small Gods is the first one that I truly loved. Since then I've read everything he ever wrote and found many more standouts. Still, this one has a special place for me. I'd forgotten the quote about philosophy but it reminds me of a line by Larry Niven: "Science fiction is the best way for a philosopher to make a living." For some more really thoughtful stuff I reccomend John Wyndham, especially his last book, Chocky.

    • @gearaldbecker6015
      @gearaldbecker6015 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SpencerReadsEverything Kind of a tough call... I'd say Equal Rites is the first real stand-out even though the ending kinda fizzles (I didn't read it until years later), The Truth is really up there with its complex mixture of themes, Going Postal has wonderful character development, Reaper Man is a great in-depth character study of the Disc's compassionate Death, The Amazing Maurice is a well-deserved award-winner, Unseen Academicals is the only "wizards" book I really like though (it's not really about the wizards though, or soccer - it's about the "little people")... more than 40 of them so it's easy to just run on. And his non-discworld stuff is great too. Funny how people think of Good Omens as a Gaiman book but Neil was definately the "trainee" on that one. He contributed a lot of great flavor, but Terry was clearly in charge of that story. But Small Gods... I'm not sure whether I'd say it's the "best," I hate to rank things that way, but it definately stands out in lots of ways. Worth reading many times.

      Yes this is certainly a hobby driven channel. Fortunately, I do get a lot out of making these reviews for my own ability to better remember what I read, and I love to hear viewers' feedback. I tried to outline my videos for the year, and I will have to cutback on making a video for every book, and I read a lot of series, so I probably will have to start doing only one video for a series. We will see. Thank you!

    I really liked this book but still am not sure what happened lol.

      You and me both! The prose were very good, but the storyline a little harder to understand.

      @SpencerReadsEverything is a bit bizarre but worth the ride if you're up for something different.

      Of course! Those romantasy series won't review themselves.

    I really enjoyed this book. I agree with this being similar to Nine Perfect Strangers, but I enjoyed this one more.

      I'm still debating which one I preferred. I think Nine Perfect Strangers took a turn near the end that made it a little harder for me to like it as much as this one, but I think I liked the premise of Nine Perfect Strangers more.

    I thought it was a book review. Bye

      Is there something specific from the book you would have liked me to address? I can really only give my impressions in a ten minute video.

      @@SpencerReadsEverything I never read the book. I see autobiographical tales as pretentious and self serving. Even so, you missed on your review when you left the story, and started to characterize Vance in today's jaundiced political view.

    I haven't read it in a few years (read it for the first time as an adult in a Children's Lit class. I loved it. The movie was good too, but I couldn't really get into it; I think I just wasn't in the right frame of mind.

      Thank you! Now that the Christmas season has passed, I may not watch it until next year, but it looked good to me.

    I completely forgot about this book but remember loving it when I was a kid.

      I was completely unaware of it as a kid. I wish I had known about it. I plan on reading it to my child when she’s old enough.
