I respect the takes, but I only have these criticisms because in terms of actually *reviewing* the game, I have to be honest that I don't think those things were great. But I'm nowhere near the opinion that the game is ruined because of it. Especially when Onimusha 2's appeal lies in its replayability which is heavily reliant on the conditionals to flesh out the story, while the parts of the story that you'll see regardless are very milquetoast. To your point on Jacque's combat, the only part I was not a fan of was that he didn't have more options for ranged combat, because at times, flying enemies were a pain to hit. But his Secret Technique whip grab made free souls spawn, so in combination with the Red Orb Vest, it was great for farming. But that's all subjective to taste, so I don't have any issues with your personal assessment. My only hardline disagreement with you is in thinking DoD is better than 3. Even if you said that in comparison to *ANY* other Onimusha game, I'd have disagreed. I'm sorry, but in my mind, it is a terrible game, even outside of being an Onimusha Game. But I'll get to that lol...

@@OneSleepyGiant I agree the main story on Oni 2 was definitely just average. But it didn't seem to hyper extend itself into as much absurdity as 3. There is no main plot points in 2 where some random kid from a completely unrelated land and time takes up so much screen time. And the outcomes of characters like Ekei and Kotaru were pretty cool to go back and replay for as you said. Plus Onimusha 2 had Gogandantess. Regarding Jean Reno, it's been a long time since I played the games so I will concede maybe I'm misremembering. I did play all Oni games several times and Jean stuck out to me as an unfun character. But I completely forgot he had a spear, so maybe that might make him more fun. Would be interesting to see you take on DoD. Other than it being too anime, I remember liking it as I felt fresh after 3. But it's also been years since i played that too.

​​​@@Obbie40I won't go too into it here, but in upping the "anime" feel, imo, they ruined the solid fundamentals of the games combat, along with an unnecessarily protracted upgrade system (both for weapons and characters), too many bullet-spongy enemies, extremely padded puzzle sections, and as if the game wasn't long enough (20ish hrs) they decided to pull a mega man boss rush at the end, complete with 3 bosses that each pop up as you think the one before was the last one. And that's without even getting into the particulars of the story.

It's definitely been one of the funnest games to revisit for me, I played all the games in release order because I was put on early. I need to know what Black Magic I need to evoke to make a port or remaster or remake happen.

I may not have the same gripe aesthetic-wise, but I did definitely share that I wasn't super taken with the character models (given my Fortnite knock-off art style comment in video). However, Killmonger cut MC aside, I do think some of the characters were well designed and none too stereotypical imo. However, I'm not what you'd call an authority on Persian rep, so I'd concede that maybe this isn't the best on that front.

I forgot to mention since I said there's no item descriptions, but there's one item that cures all ailments. But it still needs to be used by an adjacent unit. And it's still a finite resource, even with the crafting menu, but I also didn't come across any skills for curing them in my playthrough.

Oh I did it already, just didn't know what to expect that first time 😅
